What year is it? Chances are it's got electronically controlled ignition which will **** timing to avoid pinging or knocking. It won't hurt the engine, but it will just make it pretty sluggish.

I one time had to put standard gas in my Lexus GS430. The car ran just fine. It's just that it felt like I lost about 70hp.

Yes most cars (if they are newer) have adaptive timing, but they can only **** or advance so much based on the manufacture tuning parameters. So you can get pinging if you use lower octane fuel simply because the manufacturer tuned the ECU with only so much adaptive capability. Some cars are better than others.

Generally the more performance oriented the car is the more picky it can be about octane. My car is chipped and the chip is optimized for 93 octane fuel w/ a 10.5:1 compression ratio. In the dog days of summer when it's hot and humid if I use anything less under hard acceleration I get pinging, so all Summer I use 93. Later in the year towards Winter I use 91 octane. Saving .10c a gallon isn't a big deal so I almost always fill up with 93 octane Shell Ultimate.

Each cars ignition, timing and fuel maps are different and change based on load and atmospheric conditions. Bottom line is if you are getting pinging and your plugs, wires, etc are in good condition you need to bump up the octane of your fuel or investigate why it suddenly started pinging when it didn't before.

Delicate electronic parts and sensors do fail (like knock sensors) so it's best to have that stuff checked out if you have problems.

We didn't fix the oil problem after the energy crisis in the 70s or the 80s ... perhaps it's time to stop ignoring the warnings with short sighted solutions that will probably not fix anything in the short to mid term (but lets not turn this into a political discussion)?

Also, all this entitlement attitude that we deserve fuel under 3 bucks a gallon is kinda funny. Gas has been vastly underpriced for us in America for a long time, it was bound to catch up with the rest of the world. I don't like it, don't get me wrong, but I'm not delusional enough to think it's so unreasonable. We've just all been spoiled by cheap gas for too long.
100% correct. Gas is really only like 70 cents more expensive/gallon than in the 1960s. There was a long, long time where we were paying a lot less than what we were if you take into account inflation rates over the years.

+1 here. The engine in my car has quite high compression (in the 10.something:1 range) and requires 92 or higher octane. If I put anything lower in the tank, gas mileage and power go out the window. I don't mind an extra couple dollars a tank to get the power that I paid for in the first place with the car...plus I get some of that back in gas mileage.

At under $90 a barrel, shouldn't gas be well under $3 just about everywhere? At over $140 a barrel gas was right around $4.09. It always seems to adjust upward a lot faster than adjusting downward.

I was just wondering the same thing. Oil dropped below $80 a barrel today. It should be $1.00 a gallon cheaper than what it is.

The politicians are too consumed with greed and corruption to concern themselves with greed and corruption on a lower level.

$3.49 here... and dropping. i think it'll stop dropping pretty soon though.

why is it that the economy is bad, and yet gas prices are dropping? we're still using the same amount of gas we were a year ago.. when it was way over $4.00

No, demand has fallen. Maybe you are using the same amount but on average demand is down; atleast that what they tell us.

Economic slow down means less people buying stuff. The less stuff being bought, the less stuff that has to replenish stock in the stores. If less stuff is going to the stores, less fuel is being burned to transport it to the stores.

The average consumer buying gas for a commuter vehicle is not nearly as big a dent in demand as things like trucking companies, shipping companies, train companies, airlines and so on.

Oil prices were driven by speculation. Gas prices were based on oil price
and refinery capacity. The gas guys haven't built any new refineries in
decades. Kinda like the electric market, not enough capacity=higher prices.
