I'm not sure if the prices are going to stay this low for long... so how do I go about locking in the gas prices at the current level? Is there like a pre-paid gas card or something where I can buy credit for X gallons (instead of a given dollar amount)?

Perhaps only if you own a gas station or a tanker or have a secret tank on your property (although probably illegal in residentially zoned areas).

There are in fact debit cards that let you pre-pay and lock in gas prices. A friend of mine insists he did the research and they seem legit, but I don't know which ones, nor do I think I'd trust them no matter what he says.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

    It's 2.34 for regular here in the Austin area-- in taylor tx anyways -- that's about 20 miles from where i live ----<a href="http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&ref=11&quot; target="_blank"><img src="http://content.sweetim.com/sim/cpie/emoticons/0002011B.gif&quot; border=0 ></a>

Gas around here really wasn't dropping much, it was $3.68 when I filled up last friday. It's been a lot cheaper in the surrounding areas, and the local paper has been running a few articles about price gouging/fixing in the area for the last week. Must have worried the local oil barons, as it has dropped over .80 a gallon in the last five days, to $2.81.

$2.70 here too. Not a big deal for me. I get 30mpg, and I don't go far. It still works out to about 100 miles for $10. I feel for the trucks, and delivery guys. That is where it hits our economy. This year I will be much more food efficient. I was thinking my 20x40 pool would make a great garden.

Consider yourself lucky guy. Ten dollars wouldn't be able to get me to work this morning.

Finally it's $2.94 (like in the thread topic) here in Illinois. Noticed it on my way back from the airport yesterday.

Still $2.85 here in Illinois and we are cheaper than Chicago which is still around $3.00 or more.

effing over inflated state taxes and we are still broke

I use premium and the only way to finally buy gas under $3 was to use cash. I filled up yesterday for $2.99/gal premium using cash.

What a bunch of shitheads. I can't wait for the day when we don't need the oil from those countries and unless sand becomes a commodity, they wither away into history.

Just dropped to $2.85 at the three places I pass by each day and here in Oregon their is no self serve option due to state law. i'll be curious to see if the auto rebates in addition to cheap gas inspire people to roll the dice and start buying SUV's again.

You can't blame them really, they are just following the capitalistic ideal. It would be the same everywhere, you would be stupid not to make the most money you can. Some of those countries are using the oil money to make sure their economy is fine after oil dries out. Whether they'll succeed or not, that remains to be seen.

Well maybe the US should cutback the exportation of food crops, and see how much we can make. Might teach these oil producing countries a lesson as their costs for food skyrocket.

The history of the 1st time they pulled that is interesting. Back in the 70's, they were scared to death to pull any crap. OPEC were a group in name only.

Also back then, Iran was ruled by the Shah and was a "strategic ally" against the U.S.S.R. They needed new F-15's to match up with new Russian MIG's, according to analysts, but couldn't afford them.

So Henry Kissinger, with Richard Nixon's strong backing, leaned on the Shah, and leaned heavily to push the other members of the cartel to jack up the Opec price of oil. He said the American public would pay for this strategic security. Not sure, but I think it was Henry's brainstorm.

The Shah, who was one of the unofficial leaders of OPEC, was literally petrified because he thought he'd be double-crossed or assassinated.
None of those countries had armies of any significance.
However, with Kissinger's persistent pressure, the Shah convinced the rest of the OPEC leaders and they did it. Then they doubled the price again, and voila, Iran could afford all those nice jets.
American consumers screamed bloody murder in 1974 without knowing how and why it went down.
A few years later the Shah (our puppet) got sick, abdicated, then died. Iran went bass-ackwards with religious extremists, and we've had no love from them ever since.
That was the 1st oil shortage.

Today's history lesson was brought to you by the letters O,I, & L.

They better hurry with 3 GM plants closing and other auto manufacturer's SUV production to follow, there won't be any to buy.

SUV's are pretty much gone. There was a Kia dealership Florence, SC, that was giving away Rios with the purchase of a Sorento or Sedona. Can you believe that, they were GIVING away a car to get those things off the lot!

BTW, Oregon is GOOFY for NOT allowing self serve. What do you need, a state Journeyman's license in 'petroleum distribution'?

Actually, people have tried to repeal it several time, but a strong group of seniors get very active and defeat the repeal every time. A friend likes to point out that it keeps at least two attendents from holding "please help" signs at every intersection!
