Fast cars, very fast when built right. Wouldn't want to drive one on a twisted road though, it stops to be fun when you take it out of the straight road.

My first car was a 1960 Bel Air. 235 six. Got it for $100.
It's still owned by the brother of the guy I sold it to when I went into the service.
Had Mustangs, Camaros, and a lot of just plain old Detroit metal.
Never have had a Japanese car. I did own a couple of VW Rabbits. Both a
POS. Had a Escort. Even bigger POS. I've tried to stick to rear wheel drive.
Much better. I still don't get the whole union bashing thing.
Everything I've had wrong on my cars for the last 20 years had nothing to do with workmanship.
It was all poor design/engineering. That's what makes me mad. They can make a model of car for 6 or 7 years without fixing known problems. It would be so easy to make them bullit proof. Go to any Ford or
Chevy forum. You can find out the weak points of a car in 10 minutes, accross the whole life cycle of a car or engine. Yet, I can go down and find the same weak points in a 07'. There's a bunch of guys in suits NOT doing their job. I fight the same battle in my own workplace. I push problems up to be fixed, and stay with them.
    Sorry for the rant.
Time for me to buy a new 08' Camaro!

I always liked the AMC offerings too, the SC/Rambler, The Machine, Hornet SC360 etc.

My first car back in 1978 was a '68 Rambler American. 10 years old when I got it and kept it ten more......talk about reliabilty.

IMO American cars were great until the late 70's when they started switching the big Caprice/Impalas for Malibus and Galaxies/Fairlanes for Zephyrs/Granadas.

I had a 1987 Chrysler laser, turbo 4 banger. the turbo lag was nearly unbearable, but when that turbo kicked in, hold on tight. that sucker pulled hard. had a blast driving that car for a couple years.

handled pretty darn well too. I beat the snot out of that car :D

The Ford Mustang is my favorite. I own a 03 Mach 1 that is a hoot to drive, race, or just cruise around in and you can't beat that Shaker hood scoop! While not as fun to drive, my 97 Ranger has been extremely reliable. With 110,000 miles, I have only replaced the fuel pump because the float filled up with gas and gave me the incorrect gauge reading. I finally replaced the original battery last December with about 105,000 on the clock!

Sweet looking vehicle... not real sold on Hyundai’s, but it look pretty cool. Not American made either is it ;)

I'm a big VW / Audi fan as well... just all around the most fun to drive it seems.. on a reasonable budget.

A year ago, I sold a 1995 Saturn SL1 to a co-worker for $1350. This Saturn had 275,000 miles on it at the time of sale (original engine, orignal clutch, original transaxle). Only routine maintenance (brakes, battery, muffler, etc) while I owned it. The car is his daily driver and he has added 20,000 miles to the odometer in the past year...(i.e. 295,000 miles).

The car drinks a quart of oil every 1500 miles... but, besides that, its all original and still going strong.

Not a speck of rust on the body either!!! And, it typically gets 38 MPG in all-around driving.

I was only talking about the motors. I'm pretty sure both the 3.8 and the 4.3 are GM corp. blocks. Both Turbo. I'm not sure but I think the GNX was also the 4.3 but I could be wrong on that. You can also add that limited V6 turbo trans-am that was out for a year or two. that was the 3.8 GN motor.

Nope, the GNX was the 3.8L V6.

I'd never heard of a turbo V6 TransAm. I'll have to look into that one!

It was a pace car for the Indy 500, IIRC. All white, gold lettering on the side. I believe it coincided with one of the Trans Am's anniversaries, too. Going way back in my memory, I think it was the quickest production car the year it was out.

This is turning into the "Great American Car Misinformation Thread".
The GNX/TTA/GN/T-Type used a 3.8 litre Buick motor, the prerequisite to today's corporate 3800. The SY/TY's 4.3 was basically a small block chevy with 2 cylinders chopped off. The motors internally shared nothing.

From wikipedia, a 301ci turbocharged V8 was optional in 1979 and was the standard engine in 1980. When you consider the alternative was the 305, I hope everybody chose the 301!

Then in 1989 you had the LD5, which was a 3.8L turbocharged V6 putting out 250 hp and 340 ft·lb.

    Very interesting.

    I hope he was kidding.

Ever see one that was in a accident? The plastic just tears away and reveals underneath. Reminds me of something out of a Terminator movie.

    As for my contribution:
    The Ultimate Aero TT
    img_56.jpg
Over 1,000 HP and around 2700lbs.
The motor is based of GM's LSX platform. Probably a C5R block with a LS1/2/6 style crank.

The 301 had balls, but it wasn't known for it's longevity.

Pre-computer (no fuel injection) turbo setups grenaded on a regular basis.
The idea was sound, but tech was lacking. There was a pace car (early 80's)
Trans am in silver up in Norman ,OK. for sale. I believe this would be the motor
used after 79. 79 was the last 6.6 L year in both 400 and 401 flavors.
