There is an air leak somewhere. The cabinets are not supposed to be perfectly airtight, but the drivers should not be snapping back immediately. When I push in on my passive radiator, the drivers will slowly move move backwards for a little over three seconds, but they never move all the way back until I take my hand off the passive radiator.

Thanks Ray on second look that is what mine are doing also about three seconds and don't go back all the way until I let go of the radiator. I'm going to place some gasket around the tweeters anyway to see if that slows the rebound.

I do have one problem that seems to have cropped up. When I play some really deep bass the kind you feel but can't hear, my right cabinet seems to rattle with the vibrations. It sounds a little like the kid driving by in his car with that rediculous sub-woofer in the trunk of his car that just rattles things. It appears to be louder towards the back of the cabinet. It only does it when I really have some sub sonic stuff going on.

Any thoughts??? I'm thinking about taking the crossover out and having a look around.

I got a question how does your sub sound in the indention that it sets in, is it not boomy or does it seem to channel better than out in the open. By the way the living room I assume looks real nice.

This reminds me of the old Groucho Marx routine where he was playing a doctor examining a patient:

Patient: "Doctor, it hurts when I do this."
    Groucho: "Well don't do that!"

I think your drivers may be bottoming if you are playing sub sonic frequencies at high volumes. It wouldn't hurt to take a peek inside and see if anything is "loose".

Joe, Check that your white fluff is tucked neatly behind the stereo arrays, crossover bolt is tight, tight screws, and wires are not against the cabinet. It may also be lack of glue. Check the corners inside. It could also be as Raife pointed out, a rogue driver.

Thanks Ray & Steve for the feedback. Queen: "Another One Bites The Dust" is one of the culprits that causes the vibs. I hope this isn't prophesy!!!

Great advice polk65. I looked at all my screws and crossover bolts also today for loose ones and found a few believe it or not:eek: even though my speakers sounded fine, its always good to do what little maintence they need. I would have went for years im sure without thinking to check. THANKS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

    Hello all,

I just bagged a nice pair of SDA CRS speakers. I got the interconnect cable, the original manual and two speakers in near mint condition. They are presently in transit.

Does the Compendium disucss the SDA CRS speakers?

Problem resolved. Ohskigod (Louie) fixed the problem. The passive radiator on the right speaker, the screw at 2:00 was stripped. He took the radiator out and placed speaker gasket around it and placed it back in. The screw took and was able to be torqued down. NO rattle, deep bass.

Ohskigod's(Lou) Head Data = *Fs: 18.5 Hz *Vas: 10.6 cu. ft. *Qms: 5.40 *Cms: .33 mm/N *Mms: 225g *Rms: 4.85 kg/s *Sd: 805 sq. cm. *Xmax: 22 mm *Dimensions: Overall Diameter: 15-1/8", Cutout Diameter: 13-7/8", Mounting Depth: 5".

You may replace any SDA fluid coupled radiator(PR), with his head and achieve the same parameters in regards to performance. It's absolutely astonishing.

I've been here awhile and never found a Polkie so useful and musical.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    Hi Raife,
I recieved the Book yesterday. It is packed full of almost everything you need to know about SDA speakers except the fact the Ohskigods head can replace a passive driver. How did you miss that? Other than that it is a wealth of info and will no doubt become dog-eared in no time. Thanks for collecting all of this and printing it and making it available to the polk freaks here.

Manuals are available from Polk customer service department.

There are no formal audio press reviews for the 3.1TL that I am aware of.

Brochures for a speaker 17+ years old will be hard to find. The best advice I can offer is to contact Polk and ask them which publications they ran advertising spreads in. You may then be able to purchase back issues either from the publisher or on eBay or Audiogon. There is a scan of a two page SRS brochure from 1991 on the www.polksda.com website.

    DarqueKnight,

I am a new Forum member and an SDA fanatic. Mine are the SDA SRS's that I bought in 1987. POLK told me to contact you for info on upgrades. The tech I spoke with recommended your SDA Compendium. Please email me the ordering instructions.

    Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I sent you a PM with ordering info. You can also find a lot of upgrade and modification information by doing a search on the forum (e.g. "SDA modification", "Improvements to the SDA SRS", etc.).
