I think I saw AK get mentioned here a couple times, in what MIGHT be a negative light. I don't know if the Polk Forums should be run the same as AK, they're different for sure. I enjoy AK quite a bit. Trolls are quickly dispatched, and rules are enforced. If you can't abide by the rules, you're history. Not a bad thing.

I know myself and Face mentioned AK and of course I can only speak for myself here but it was and is not my intention to put down AK or show it in a negative way. AK as you say is certainly different in there approach to moderating and it's not neccesarily a bad thing just different. One of the things I do like about there moderation is there are moderators for every area and I believe super/global moderators that police all areas which is very efficent.

One of the things I like about CP is that the moderation style is different more lax you might say which has it's own appeal but of course can go too far if not watched and can scare off newcomers and piss off oldtimers it is a delicate dance.

There is no doubt in my mind that a large part of what is said here would never fly at AK and some of it here as far as I am concerned shouldndt fly here either but it is not my decision to make. It is Polks forum and they can do with it as they wish.

Part of the problem here at CP is we have a large contingent of **** kissers and sometimes even though they know that what a particular person says is wrong on just about every level they will agree with and back up the person making that statement for various reasons, it may be an old timer and some newcomer wants to fit in so they follow suit, other times it's a mod and people will bow down and kiss there **** for no apparent reason I can think of other than they either want to be accepted/liked. Other times it's one of there buddies so they feel compelled to agree.

I believe that if this continues you will see both more oldtimers leave and newcomers post little or not join at all.

As mentioned earlier I think we need more moderators more than we need a new style of moderation but certainly IMHO BOTH moderators and members alike need to be more civil than what I have seen in this thread even, if CP wants to attract newcomers and keep the ones we have.

I know that some people are going to hate me for what I have said here but but thats ok, I said what I think is true and what needed to be said.

Like most things online if there is anything useful that you can get from my ramblings and apply it usefully fine, if not discard it all and carry on.

    I don't think we need more moderation/policing.

I think it would be a good idea to discuss our view(s) of the subject in a civilized matter as it sometimes seems to be too easy to accuse someone of trolling simply because he/she/they have a different view on a specific subject. In no way I want this to be a war or turn to attacks but ratter to see peoples view(s) on the subject and who knows possibly clear the air?? Anyone that is willing to throw some positive thoughts are welcomed.
...Trolls are quickly dispatched, and rules are enforced. If you can't abide by the rules, you're history. Not a bad thing...
I fully agree with your above comments as good clear rules and application of the rules will usually makes for positive internet experience and great learning experience. However, in no way should we blame Polk for the lack of moderation and application of the rules. As we know, Polk is a business and while providing us with this extra/bonus (Club Polk) it is hard for Polk to justify adding any extra moderators thus I think some volunteer moderators might not be such a bad idea.

This is a definition from another forum I frequently visit (clear and concised rules and yes disturbers don't usually stick for long):

"Annoying posts & Trolling – Annoying posts such as those consisting of all uppercase letters or containing an excessive number or smilies, icons, oversized fonts, excessive quoting will be subject to deletion without warning. Trolling posts are not permitted on the forum and will be deleted without warning. (Background: What is a troll and what is trolling?". This includes posts such as "Company XYZ sucks" or posts in the **** forum saying "XYZ stinks, you should go to ABC"

Those are general definitions found on the internet (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=trolling)
    1. trolling 1307 up, 136 down
Being a **** on the internet because you can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander, because it's the internet and, hey, you can.
Guy: "I just found the coolest ninja pencil in existence."
Other Guy: "I just found the most retarded thread in existence."

    2. trolling 572 up, 85 down
Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards. When done in a moderated internet community, this can result in banning. When done to uptight people such as fundies, this can result in hilarity.
Apparently I can't post links here, so I can't give a good example of trolling. Sorry.

    3. trolling 245 up, 71 down
Act of appearing on internet forums and boards with malicious intent. Trolling includes...

-batting people to flame at you
-putting the forum down and encouraging people to leave.
    -flaming
    -spamming
-using several identities on a board to support your own arguments / stage pretend arguments
-generally being a dick on a power trip.
Some trolls claim they actions benefit others. These trolls are also twats

Trolls usually come here with attitudes as big as their ego's. Not once has anyone been flamed or run out of here with a different point of view. As long as it's concise and constructive rather than in your face and absolute then there is NEVER an issue.

When the first few posts are inflammatory, attacking, vulgar, nasty, and worded to be extremely confrontational.................then yes the Kraken gets released and generally things go down hill from there.

Im sorry my friend, but I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that statement. I have read far too many posts/threads where newer members voiced their opinions about the current subject and when they tried to defend their position, were basically fed to the wolves and it usually turns ugly real quick. Fact is, being an open forum for anybody to join we have to be as civil as possible. Just my 2 cents worth.

I do get your point about the decorum, I read more than enough so far on this site on that subject to somehow understand a little more about where you guys come from... It is called Club Polk afterall. Matter of fact there has been some instances when reading some of the posts, I felt great respect for the Club and the bond between the members however, good bond and friendship is very positive but cautious is advisable that it isn't seen as a click (here, I far from want to be confrontational but ratter trying to simply be as honest as possible so healthy discussion and understanding be achieved).

Now, if you you put your self in the skin of most new comers (newbies if you want) you will notice that many have already participated in internet forums and you must also realize that most forums are not necessarily Club and therefore, many of us will act according to most forum they have been used too. They'll simply go with the flow and at times provide their own input to the best of their ability. Maybe Polk Audio should provide some sort of warning/pointers on what to expect on their forum and how to behave at first (keeping low profile) instead of simply inviting their consumer to be part of this forum (it definitely would be to their advantage business wise as I am convinced some consumers may have been runned away from Polk in some instances). Also considering the average age on the forum, we also must realize that a so called new comer/newbie also has experience of his own when joining the club therefore, this should be taken into consideration even by the long timer. Instead of pre judging on the amount of posts, maybe simply test the newb to see if he/she is baloney or real. I am convinced the Club would be gaining with such an attitude.

I also have noticed there that if someone is somewhat to eager to participate (therefore posts adding too quickly) makes some freak out (with some reading around I get the hint about the FS flea market) but there again there are pre judgement, some sort of paranoia in that regard (again, my choice of wording isn't to create battle but simply being honest about the way I see at my end of the line/net) as many of us are simply eager to get involved and do not think of selling anything. I've seen such comment about my self but as many can withness, I haven't solicited any sale in any shape or form. All I did so far, I simply out of interest checked out how the system was working but without even thinking of either selling or buying.

As far as being tough skin, I fully agree with that and personnally the insult(s) and name(s) calling don't affect me however, I deplore the lack of sharing/learning and healthy debating when such behavior occurs (usually not solo but ratter a string that renders the discussion somewhat useless)... afterall, isn't it the main reason most of us frequent this site? Sharing the passion for the hobby, our findings, beliefs and personal knowledge? In order to do so, shouldn't we agree to disagree? To go back to my original question, proposal for a definition of trolling, wouldn't it be correct to state that name calling, bashing is in fact trolling and disturbing the discussion at hand? I personnally have been open minded when some brought some respectable to the discussion (IE: DK which brought some good arguments, good testing/reviews of his own and I in fact showed my respect in the open).

    Simple food for thoughts!

    Cheers :)
