    I drive 500 miles and return and this THREAD IS STILL HERE!

    Shame on everyone! No more discussion on this topic is needed, I think.

    The one thing that has 'really' surprised me with all these interminable posts. Is if you want to contest seafire all you need is a Ph.D. from M.I.T., in solid state physics. And you mean to tell me with ALL the EXPERTISE on this site. No one is a Physicist! Well, then there is NO debate on the objective side here! Seafire...your own educational qualifications on this topic are? Please list. And do not list 35 years experience. Let me see some SCIENCE graduate degrees, please.

    Everyone else. Let's see the Degrees! Or maybe we can call up the guys who have them...seems to me we've done that on this site!

    There is an objective point to saying that the wiring and circuitry in both a lot of equipment and speakers is not very high-end. The Cat 5 debate...well I guess there is one. That's why I'm here, to learn a thing or two.

    Have I heard differences in cables. Yes and no. I've found that as I live with a cable for a while it often loses it's 'initial' impression and sounds less of an improvement than I first thought--but that's probably because I doubt everything in my life all the time, even myself, especially myself.

    One last factor. To Heiney9, and Nelson Pass, indeed hearing is 'subjective' in the final analysis. But also important, and I've said this many many times here. Unless you can at least play a musical instrument or two or more--by EAR, can tell when you are sharp or flat or maybe even have 'perfect pitch', I do not think your ears are 'qualified' to make audio judgements about high end tweaks to your system, including cables that cost a months salary or more.

    The EARS you use are significant. So we have two questions here.

    1. Do you have a Ph.D. in solid state physics?
    2. Do you have the concert hall hearing of a conductor?

    This covers both the OBJECTIVE SIDE. And the SUBJECTIVE side.

    Now those of you who are conductors and Physicists, please step forward and either support or quelch seafire's arugments!

    Short of this I call this discussion to an end.

    Joseph,

    Both requirements are not necessary. You have one. So at least we know you've got the 'ear' to discern good sound!

    You also mention two very prestigious schools so the Ph.D. slam loses it's force.

    I've only been gone a couple of days (so I had read it when Bobt started it), then it got seaFIRED and it took me a while to catch up, now I don't know what's up! Maybe we should start sharing our 'favorite' recipies! And argue about how to test whether or not the 'food' tastes good OBJECTIVELY?

    ......I can prove it..... FINALLY something that I Understand !!!

    8.1 Proof of Normal Equations

    We will assume that ATA is invertible. This is a reasonable assumption because there are more equations than unknowns. The length of the vector x is defined to be the lenght of the vector so the length of the vector squared is the length of the vector squared The square of the length of the vector Ax-b is the sum of the squares of the errors since each element of Ax - b is the error at a point. We want to minimize this quantity. We claim that the solution to the normal equations, which we will denote as x* = (ATA)-1ATb, minimizes the sum of the squares of the errors.

    We claim, and will prove, that

    ||Ax - b||2 = ||Ax* - b||2 + ||A (x - x*)||2.

    Since we are minimizing over x, ||Ax - b||2 will be minimized when x = x* so that ||A (x - x*)||2 is zero. This is true because ||A (x - x*)||2 can never be negative.

    To prove the claim, we will work with the right side of the equation and prove that it is equal to the left side. These equations are numbered. There are short explanations of these steps following the proof.
    = ||Ax* - b||2 + ||A (x - x*)||2 (1)
    = (Ax* - b)T (Ax* - b) + (A(x - x*))T A(x - x*) (2)
    = (A (ATA)-1ATb - b)T (A (ATA)-1ATb - b)T +
    (A(x - (ATA)-1ATb))T A(x - (ATA)-1ATb) (3)
    = (A (ATA)-1 ATb - b)T (A (ATA)-1 ATb - b) +
    (Ax - A (ATA)-1 ATb)T (Ax - A (ATA)-1 ATb) (4)
    = (bTA (ATA)-1 AT - bT) (A (ATA)-1 ATb - b) +
    (xTAT - bTA (ATA)-1 AT)(Ax - A (ATA)-1 ATb) (5)
    = (bTA (ATA)-1 ATA (ATA)-1ATb - 2bTA (ATA)-1ATb + bTb +
    (xTATAx - 2bTA (ATA)-1 ATAx + bTA (ATA)-1 ATA (ATA)-1ATb) (6)
    = (bTA (ATA)-1 ATb - 2bTA (ATA)-1 ATb + bTb) +
    (xTATAx - 2bTAx + bTA (ATA)-1 ATb) (7)
    = bTb + xTATAx - 2bTAx (8)

    Now, if we look at the left side of the equation, we can see that it equals the right side because
    ||Ax - b||2 = (Ax - b)T (Ax - b) = (xTAT - bT) (Ax - b) = xTATAx - 2bTAx + bTb.

    This proves that x = x* = (ATA)-1ATb uniquely minimizes the sum of the squares of the error for the equation Ax - b.

    The following are comments on the steps of the proof:

    1. This is the right hand side of the equation from the claim.

    2. ||y||2 = yTy

    3. Replace x* with (ATA)-1ATb.

    4. Distribute A in the second term.

    5. (M + N)T = MT + NT, (RS)T = STR T, and (A-1)T = (AT)-1

    6. Because each term is a vector and xTy = yTx, which can also be written as equations, we can multiply in a manner similar to polynomial multiplication. However, we must remember that matrix multiplication is not commutative, so the order of multiplication of the matrices matters.

    7. (ATA)-1(ATA) = I

    8. Combine like terms.
