If you will read the news article more closely, she didn't get that punishment for being raped, but for being with her guy friend in the car in the first place... a big no no in their culture.

If YOU will read the news article more closely, you will also see that her punishment was doubled for simply defending herself...and her lawyer was punished as well. That's not culture, that's oppression. Doing despicable things in the name of religion or culture doesn't make them right, it just makes the people doing these awful things feel better and justified in their actions.

Our degraded western ways....sheesh. We don't set up financial assistance for the families of suicide bombers, but we are the ones that are degraded.

Ya'll need to remember that this is Muslim part of town and just like you and your beliefs, they take them very seriously and many of them directly conflict with yours. However we can try to help them follow our own path of “civilization” and get them to change some of these extreme views like we did ourselves over the past 300 years. This kind of thing has been working in the world but usually follows industrialization, education and globalization of the population in the country. But to sit in your computer chair and wonder why these people with completely different world histories, religions and cultures don’t embrace your religion, your culture and the American way is ridiculous. A lot of people in the USA fail to realize that this country is just about as fundamental fanatical Judeo-Christian as they are Muslim.

It’s too bad we have a small set of extreme cultural bigots in the USA who will refute this and hide behind "Im just not PC".

The US has done more damage to the world than has made a positive contribution. If you look at the history, you'll see your government has helped communism and facism thrive when it was in their best interest. The CIA has had a hand in every 3rd world country on the planet that has oil, drugs or precious metals. Your soldiers are fighting extremists who are using alot of weapons given to them by your own country years ago when these extremists were fighting to rid the world of communism. So point the finger at yourself before you point it at others.

the difference is, its not as much as the Iraqi's fighting us, as it is people as foreign to Iraq as we are (Al QAEDA). If we arent fighting them there, we would be fighting them elsewhere, possibly even on our own soil.

thats what your not seeing. THEIR laws say a women cannot be with a man not related to her in public. She broke that law (I dont agree with) but its not our place to say their laws are wrong. I always stay away from these arguments, but I have to respond to this one. Is's funny then how in the 22 years that I lived in the deep South (South Louisiana), I never saw one lynched black person nor one burned church. I've been to every state in the south multiple times and have never witnessed any of this stuff. You make it sound like there's a body hanging from every tree limb down there.

I read an article about how the king was pouring billions into creating a high tech university similar to MIT or CalTech. The campus was to be open to both sex with no bounderies separating the two and no separate entrances for male and female. The religious police is barred from entering this campus.

The toughest part will be trying to recruit the faculty, especially MIT professors. I think this event will be a step backwards to achieving the goals of an MIT in the desert.

Another thing about Saudi Arabia... there law goes something like this:

If a crime against a woman is committed, it goes to a judge.
There is no jury. But, witnesses are considered.
A male witness has a full vote.
A female witness has a half a vote.
And, guys win all ties.

So, basically, it takes three women witnesses to convict a guy of ANYTHING.

Then, the judge determines the punishment... mostly based upon how much wrong the guy did to the woman's family. If he raped a guys wife, that is punishable by death. And the beheading is performed by the husband of the raped wife (if he so chooses). Alternatively, the husband of the raped wife can request that a government executioner perform the beheading.

The public beheadings are performed once per month on their holy day (I think its Friday). They are not a somber occasion. Instead, they are a celebration of Islam Law. Kind of like an excuse to have a party.

And, if you live in that part of the world (very hot, ugly, desolate place), any good excuse for a party is reason enough to celebrate.

our justice system has flaws to be sure, but i have a feeling the Saudi plan has ALOT of innocent people being punished, which to me, is worse than a guilty guy getting off. just throwing it out there
