It's not fear mongering William by pointing out the flaws in the system, and in the people within that system....regardless which side of the isle your beliefs rest.

Incompetence...lack of accountability are rampant, thinking for yourself is a requirement to see that. If you don't, or disagree with that, then contribute what you think should be done to contain the Ebola virus....or stay out of the thread. Simple huh ?

I'll post whare and what I want. Simple huh?

If we closed the borders like you claim to want, you'd be whining about the current administration taking peoples rights away.

One side would claim that, but I don't fall on that side of the coin.

So...tell us your grand plan to contain or quarantine, protect people from infectious diseases ? All I'm hearing is deflections.

Or maybe your idea is this....

I can't believe that every major city doesn't have a clean quarantine cell (house, condo, building, clinic area, whatever it takes) waiting for such a need.

Locking these poor people into their own apartment with the contagious materials with orders not to leave or be arrested seems like a death sentence.

Nothing "fringe" about it really. We have an incompetent administration who is putting political ideology above safety. That's fringe ?

You won't see flights banned from infected countries because that would also align with closing the southern border....which this administration is in support of just the opposite. Every government agency rings the same, telling us it can't be done. We can't stop flights or close the border. So in essence they are telling you they can't keep you safe, or at least can't try their best. If you accept that premise, then you also accept the outcomes. Can't have it both ways.

You did flag my post, in this very thread. It clearly shows your name.

And why should I have a plan to stop infectious diseases, not my field of study. And as you have clearly shown, not yours either.

You would have to stop all travel to and from all countries. Ain't gonna happen.

It's not political, and has nothing to do with the "southern border".

Even if you stopped flights from infected countries, people travel all over the world, they could return to the US from a different country. It could be a week or more later, still showing no signs of infection.

Because it's a start....France and the UK have already done it....AND yes it is a political decision, everything is. We have another infectious disease spreading aside from the Ebola worries. Just in case you haven't paid attention.

I'm no expert, neither are you, but you don't need be to instill common sense practices. Our own experts...supposedly anyway, are seen washing infected vomit with no suits on, spreading it around. Our own experts told us it was unlikely this virus can come here from international travel. Our own experts told 35 people to go home after contact with an infected person. Our own experts said they are prepared, hospitals/nurses are prepared. If being an expert means you simply have to be wrong on many levels, then everyone in government is an expert.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure....old but still stands today.

You're right. It's already here. However, the lack of taking this virus as a serious threat by those in government is a failure. This should have been taken way more seriously than it has been. It should still be taken more seriously in how things are being treated. Not sending someone into the apartment in Dallas to retrieve the clothing and sheets this guy slept and wore is ridiculous. They should isolate that family somewhere else and clean that apartment from top to bottom - and anything else around that complex with a little more caution than what's being exhibited.

That said, I don't know how you shut down borders. Unless Canada and Mexico both work with the U.S., there's no way to contain this from entering the country at some point. I would think you would have to contain the disease at the source - Liberia. Unless you quarantine people on their way out of that country, you'll never contain it. People will lie about where they've been, what they've been exposed to and anything else to get out - as we've already seen with just this one individual. If you assume people are going to be honest in this whole thing, you had better rethink your understanding of human nature.

I needed them to go to public school when I was a child...

I watched a documentary called the Vice Guide to Liberia a while ago. Watch it at your own risk as it is very graphic. Then tell me what you will think it will take to wipe out Ebola in Liberia. It is sobering and heartbreaking.

agree pal, the border situation spans many administrations, but none as open as this one. To curtail flights....yeah, it will cost some money but what is more important, human life or money ? Unless you have a certain price tag in mind as to that worth, I'm listening. It would actually cost more money should an actual breakout happen and whole cities needing to be quarantined. Whats that gonna cost ?

Every government agency is spewing out the same thing, we can't close the border or restrict flights. Big difference between "can't" and "won't". You can't keep the general public safe....or you won't ? Either way, spells trouble for the general population.

Nothing is a guarantee either of safety. It's not a matter of doing one particular thing but many across different avenues. Yeah, you have to contain it at the source in the African nations but you also have to tackle modes of transportation....which is how it spreads quickly. If you don't have the will to battle these things on all fronts, then you've already surrendered. You've agreed to accept a certain percentage of deaths. That may work out in Washington circles, that train of thought, but not down on main street USA.

Well, someone finally had the idea to remove the four other people from their apartment, and quarantine them in a house. Now they are cleaning the apartment, and I wouldn't want that job.

The story says they want to quarantine these people until October 19th, by which time they should show symptoms if they have contracted Ebola.

I have a question here. Why can't they do daily blood tests for the virus? I realize that is impractical for all the people in Africa, but for these people it makes sense. Plus it will provide some data as to when the virus has multiplied enough to be detected. I doubt if one day the virus appears, and that is the same time you start to exhibit symptoms.

Virologist Heinz Feldmann, who has studied Ebola for 20 years and is currently working on one of several experimental vaccines for the virus, warned in a September interview that the airport was the place in Monrovia where he felt the most unsafe, and that screening for Ebola at the airport was a "disaster."
In an interview with Science Magazine in September, Feldmann, who had recently returned from three weeks in Monrovia, explains that the front lines in west Africa against the Ebola virus are by far the most dangerous; those working for organizations like Doctors Without Borders live under the constant threat of contracting the virus. Feldmann notes that he himself did not feel unsafe working in Liberia because his work was academic, and thus enclosed with the virus, rather than the patients:
Patients are like virus factories producing up to a hundred million virus particles per milliliter of blood, and a patient is unpredictable; a patient could cough, could spit at you, vomit on you, or even become aggressive and attack you. So these people really have the highest risk and have the highest burden.
Feldmann confesses that the place at which he felt the least safe was the airport, calling it the place of "highest risk." For example, screening occurs in areas confined enough that those being screened are likely to come into contact with the virus should an Ebola patient be among them. Furthermore, screeners are so poorly trained that they often cannot even properly measure temperature.
"They are checking your temperature three times before you get into the airport, but if you look at the people that do this kind of work, they don't really know how to use the devices," Feldmann explains. "They are writing down temperatures of 32°C, which everybody should know is impossible for a living person." Feldmann calls for major overhauls in the system, as he asserts that the checks are "completely useless" and "just a disaster."
In the weeks subsequent to the interview with Feldmann, a Liberian citizen from Monrovia, Thomas Eric Duncan, arrived in Texas having contracted Ebola. Duncan, who touched an Ebola victim while trying to help her take a taxi to the hospital, claimed on airport screening forms that he had not come into contact with anyone appearing to have Ebola symptoms, something for which the government of Liberia has vowed to prosecute Duncan. In announcing plans to prosecute, officials admitted the screenings were largely an honor system in which passengers were expected to be forthright on their documents.

And BTW.... If I travelled to Sierra Leone and was exposed to Ebola and brought a plant back with me and lied about my exposure on my declaration form... I would be allowed entry but the plant wouldn't be allowed in the country regardless because of the potential threat to agriculture. These practices were put in place to protect our food supply by people who used common sense. Our reactionary efforts to control Ebola in the third world are not working. Thousands of people have died already and they don't even know if it is 3000 or 10000. They don't even know how many people are infected or potentially infected. I am very cynical/skeptical about the government sugar coating information before an election to protect the optics.

At least our agriculture is safe tho.

This is the 3rd "plague" of my lifetime. Poliomyelitis, and HIV being the 1st two. My concern, not an irrational one, is that it gains a foothold in North America. Unlike the other two mentioned, this virus can jump species, and be carried by other animals.
Those carriers are unaffected by it, and thus show no symptoms.
