Here is what we have learned so far. 2 victims are now tested positive in Dallas. They acquired it from Thomas Duncan of whom we were told was isolated and no threat to infect others in the hospital where he was being cared for. The people he was in contact with while he was with symptoms are still being monitored and to date no one from that group has become infected.

The CDC is led by incompetent people. Frieden (see Baghdad Bob) should be fired for lying to the American people for whom he serves. His arrogance prevents him from asking himself the question of "but what if I am wrong?" Where a week ago or so they were arrogantly chest thumping that none of this could happen.. they are now saying that this could get worse and we are doing everything possible.... This should serve as a case study of the consequences of letting people from academia run our government.

Healthcare workers are eventually going to make a mistake(s). Unfortunately mistakes in dealing with ebola can lead to an outbreak. They haven't been able to rid hospitals and care facilities of Hospital Acquired Infections like staph and every patient that goes in to one is at risk. What makes anyone think they can do a better job with ebola?

In the mean time... one political party to be held nameless has decided "hey it's election season... lets blame it on budget cuts". Whereas this might be a good argument if it were true except for the fact that there are no budget "cuts" at the CDC and NIH, their budgets have steadily increased (multiplied) over the last 10 years. The cuts that they site are cuts in discretionary spending which is money that gets budgeted for bottled water and such. But "there they go again"....

Perhaps you didn't catch the intention. It's easy to be cavalier and flippant when you think something is far away and you're too healthy to worry any personal effect. Clearly thinking small...or is that small thinking?

The past 24 hours has revealed a 2nd infection, a hospital not prepared to deal with the situation at all, an admitted fever while flying on a commercial flight, admission of lacking oversite from the federal agency that should be in charge, a gag order on employees involved and risking their lives...and then an entire government full of unqualified people playing politics instead of protecting what their first order of business is supposed to be. What will the next 24 hours bring?

I don't think that was the point Cj was trying to make... I think he was asking you if your opinion would be different if you or one of your loved ones were on Frontier Flight 1143 on 10/13/14? The issue at hand in this case is that the nurse was not to be travelling as she was on an order to "self monitor" herself and according to those guidelines she was not to fly on public airlines or use public transportation... Now that sucks for her, be now she made it suck for 100 + more people who now have become impacted by the fact that we let Thomas Duncan in in the first place. The arrogant politically correct reasons for not imposing a travel ban from these infected are idiotic. France the UK Saudi Arabia and a growing list of countries now including St Lucia which will certainly encourage additional caribbean countries to follow suit because they are taking a common sense approach to protect their citizens and their livelihoods.

If the administration doesn't think a travel ban would work, then they should ask the above countries how they are doing it. But their arrogance would not permit that.

I would point out that many of the things the so called experts said could not happen have happened and many of them now say that their original "estimates" are now much more serious than they thought even a week ago.

This thread is a place for concerned people to voice their opinions and to share information and I welcome anyone's sharing of that. Nobody wants to see anybody harmed by this vicious disease. You are entitled to take this issue lightly and others are allowed to have their views as well but I think the time to make light of ebola would be after the issues are resolved.

Bottom line- the hospital is being run about like my company.
Couple guys talking big on top and a lot of confused budget constrained
employees at the bottom. So they had 80 people wandering in and out of the
ebola patient's area. Why? That's a lot of risks. Why didn't they limit it to a few people so there was less risk? 80 people means a lot of suiting up and cleaning up afterward. Of course, the rumor is they really weren't fully "suited up" at all.
There lies the problem. so now we have to worry about all the other patients
that were on the doctor's and nurses rounds. Add a couple plane rides and
pretty soon we'll have a lot more issues to deal with.

All this is showing why we should not be s c r e w i n g around with this disease. It explodes exponentially, so it needs to be squashed hard right from the start. If this thing gets out of control expect martial law, mandatory quarantines of cities, etc.

On the positive side, this is good training and experience. Even if this fizzles out you can bet money somebody is working on a man made disease for terrorists to spread.

Not sure about the CDC, but the NIH has faced severe budget cuts over the last 5 or so years. Research institutions are starting to close labs as there is not enough money to pay staff, buy supplies/equipment, etc. My job (I work in COPD/Cystic Fibrosis research) depends in large part on NIH funding so we pay attention to that. Where did you get your information?

No cuts to the NIH they just had to deal with no increases. However in Washington if you propose needing a $10 billion dollar budget and receive approval for a $9 billion dollar budget and only spent $8.75 billion the previous budget cycle bureaucrats will claim that there budget was cut by $1 billion. And also recall that the administration has never even worked to get a budget approved by congress. The budgets that were submitted did not get approval by congress and were voted down and never resolved. There was ever even any pursuit to reconcile the budget, which is their job to do!! It is the LAW the the ADMIN and Congress pass a budget.

What I would like to see is: If government, like the private sector has to do more with less, then they need to make sure they prioritize things by most important to least important. It is absurd that when a government bureaucrat uses the excuse of "budget cuts" every time they screw up.It has become very popular for the government to punish the American people about budget cuts to score political points. Remember during the last gov shutdown they closed the Vietnam Vets memorial but allowed undocumented immigrants to assemble on the mall? Seems like they don't know how to prioritize in my opinion. And at the end of it all... all of the non essential employees that were furloughed were given back pay.

We are spending more money that we don't have and our deficits are growing, and the gov will tell you they are cutting the budget which is actually a total lie. Truth be told 2013 was a record for taxes collected by the govt and it's still not enough to protect the american people? BTW the only people who were truly cut, meaning compensation and jobs were decreased, was the military...

Maybe we should have not spent all the billions of $$$ spying on Americans and allocated those funds where they would be better served.

Here is a list of wasteful government spending. As you could see.. there is probably enough here to fund more important things. How much taxpayer funds have been spent on flying around the country campaigning and fundraising at the taxpayers expense? I am sure the amount of $$$ needed to fund these important things could have been better prioritized.

I just learned this morning that the nurse who travelled to Cleveland was told by the CDC that it was OK to do so even though the protocol said she was not to. Is this more a result of budget cuts or incompetence?

Like all government agencies, spending money efficiently isn't high on the priority list. The CDC in the last 5 years got 3 billion dollars, know how much of that went towards epidemiology or to improve lab capacity ? 180 million only.....but they felt a need to spend 517 million, almost 3 times as much, in community block grants to promote healthy foods and improve sidewalks. WTF does the CDC have to do with sidewalks ?

This is how your tax dollars get swindled away. Paid out to supporters, no bid contracts, ghost payrolling, etc. Who audits this stuff....who is accountable ? Obviously nobody and that's the way either party likes it.

Budget cuts are meant to force people to prioritize spending....only they don't. They cut what is most noticeable and hurtful to the people they serve so the outcry to restore funding becomes louder. Don't you prioritize spending in your own household budgets ? Is it unreasonable to ask those in charge of our tax money to do the same ?

CDC has made flop after flop after flop. So much so that the general public has lost confidence in them. People simply don't believe them anymore, and rightfully so. This administration also has made a disaster out of everything it touches and lied about everything....no confidence there either. So why would it be a stretch to see the fear spreading like wildfire ? You reap what you sow. Only 2 reasons from where I sit, either the incompetence level is off the charts, or it's on purpose.

But lets make sure we put the blame where it belongs.... on budget cuts... Is that the best they can come up with??? We have a potential calamity here and they throw out red meat for their ideologues. One thing to note... is whenever the CDC says there is not risk... look out!!!

With all of the BS technology and money we spend to prevent situations like this, the rate of 1 ebola victim causes 2 others to get sick in Western Africa so far has the same 1:2 ratio here where something like that couldn't happen. But we are all safe...

So the "protocol" allowed the known exposed nurse to get on a flight because even though she was exposed was because her fever was only 99.5 and not the 100.4 that the "protocol" would call for her to be quarantined.

Now a Teacher that was visited in Cleveland by the Dallas nurse and the school that she teaches in are at risk... Can't wait to hear Baghdad Bob tell us that a team from the CDC will be there within the next 24 hrs to "fast respond" to this issue... although the visit occurred before 10/13 and which would really make the response 96 hours.

I also want to know who is telling the CDC director that we don't need a travel ban... He cannot seriously believe that... And if his job is being threatened to comply with the regime he should step down and blow the whistle. This needs to be investigated but I am sure his email will be lost.

BTW Dr. Kent Brantley should replace this idiot Frieden.. he seems to be the only one who has any common sense.

Lets also not forget at present, 13,000 people have registered travel visas' from west Africa, with no travel bans in sight. Seeing how just one person was able to come here and get over 500,000 bucks worth of free medical care, put over 100 others at risk, is it not a safe assumption anyone who gets this virus will do anything to get their butt here ? Do the math....add the risk...subtract what we are doing....or not doing and form your own questions.

So now we have some major airports checking the temperatures of people coming from the the west african nations ...are we checking them if they come in on connecting flights? what do we do if someone arrives with a fever? Are we sending that person back?Do we spend a million dollars on isolating and treating this person while taking all those risks? What about the person who shows no symptoms yet who is incubating the disease? How is that supposed to handle that occurrence... Wouldn't it just be easier/wiser for the the US Consulates in all of these countries and countries where West Africans are connecting thru to deny visas?

All of these questions need to be addressed by someone who would much rather be out fund raising than governing.

At the care level, there should of been some over the top
paranoia taking place. CLEAN, ISOLATE, CLEAN AGAIN.
Now we have to worry about hundreds of hospital patients
being exposed. Common sense says they should of limited
the number of medical staff contacting the patient, AND
NOT HAD THEM DOING NORMAL ROUNDS.
As of right now, there are just too many hospital staff members to
watch. They can't isolate them or there wouldn't be enough
staff to run the hospital. Saying you have a great plan
and actually having a great pan are not the same.
So far all we have are a lot of flapping lips.
Let's not forget the judge that pulled out the family from
Duncan's apartment in his car. We are not done with that part of the
story yet, either.

Yes, it would but our own Embassy's are still processing visa's at roughly 100 per day from west African nations. There is no will from the executive branch to stop this from entering regardless of the spin put on it. There is also no will to stop the spread of the enterovirus dubbed d68 from taking foothold in all our states from our southern border.

Like it or not, directives on priorities for all government agencies come from the executive branch. The buck stops where ? At the oval office, even he has said so himself.

So I ask again....on purpose, or just incompetence never before seen at such higher levels ?

Nope...Maybe a limited schedule of fund raising and golf along with a less rigid ideological bent on everything and a focus on doing what is necessary would be helpful. But that ain't happening. Polls are showing that confidence in govt is historically low.

I'm watching CSPAN for lunch and am amazed at Henry Waxman doubling down on the "budget cuts". I would like to take notes about all the statements which are absolute BS, but every sentence would qualify.

If Ebola can only be contracted by contact with an infected host, then why did they take the Frontier Airlines plane out of service and disinfect it 4 times?

So far on CSPAN the hearing seems to be a sales pitch for more funding. When do we get to the part about locking down this threat and resolving the issue? I think Frieden should be given an office in Dallas Presbyterian until that issue is resolved and then he needs to be shipped off to West Africa to solve it there.

....and why are they chasing down all passengers on those flights and crew members ? Who did she have contact with in the airport too. Did she eat anywhere, drool on a napkin only to be picked up by a busboy ? Possibilities are endless, which is how these things spread. Nurse 2 is being sent to NIH in DC... When asked whether other/more will be sent there, he said no because they have only capacity for 2 patients. So why no limit or quarantine of travellers question is being fumbled . He was directly asked if that was told to him to adopt that policy and he fumbled and did not answer which to me means he was told.

So 2 is the maximum number of patients the NIH can isolate.
