Last night was "Best Of/Greatest Hits SACD Night"

The recording/mastering of each of these SACDs is excellent.

    Carpenters - Carpenters: Singles 1969-1981

    2474.jpg

Whether you liked the music or not, Karen Carpenter had a hell of a voice. Just another tragic story of an extremely tallented performer.

The Police - Every Breath You Take - The Classics

    702.jpg

"Message In A Bottle" is great on this SACD. There are some cut's like "Synchronicity" that should be on this "hits" album, but I guess it was left off since it didn't get a lot of airplay. Thats ok, since I have that album on SACD, redbook and LP.

The Kinks - Come Dancing with the Kinks, The Best of the Kinks 1977-1986

    2839.jpg

Not their early work, but it is still good stuff. "LOLA" (live) and "Superman" (disco cut) and "You Really Got Me" (live) make this a very interesting album.

Donavon Frankenreiter's new LP Move by Yourself

Definitely a big departure from his first CD. Much funkier and very similar to Jamiraquai.

Van Morrison - Pay the Devil
    2006, Lost Highway - 180g vinyl LP

I'm not much for country music, but the Belfast Cowboy has more tricks up his sleeve than blue-eyed soul ballads. He nails an array of country classics with this new offering. I can just hear Paula Abdul now: "Van, you took 'Your Cheatin' Heart' and made it your own." Highly enjoyable and very well produced.

    Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue
    Blue Note - ABNC 4123S, 200g LP

Burrell and a great band including Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, Bill English on drums, Ray Barretto on conga and Major Holley Jr. on bass. Superb!

Gerry Rafferty - City to City
    1978, United Artists - UA-LA840-G, LP

Spinning some oldies but goodies. This is one of the finest rock albums from the 70's in my book. Very innovative arrangements, tight, and excellent production.

Next up: Rafferty's original group, Spooky Tooth, with "You Broke My Heart, So I Busted Your Jaw."

Great minds must think alike....Nothing on the tube other than Big Break on the golf channel... So I dug into the stack and came up with Spooky Tooth (same LP) and one of my all-time favorite LPs

Emerson Lake & Palmer - Emerson Lake & Palmer

    B0000033OZ.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

It is one of the best progressive rock albums ever recorded. ELP, Yes and Alan Parsons were at the cutting edge of the genre and each have their watermark album. ELPs first was their best IMO. This LP is absolutely worn out and is almost beyond listenable (one of the few in my collection of almost 40 years in this condition - it's been played a few times) . It will have to be replaced with either another LP or the remastered CD. Decisions, decisions....this would be a great SACD candidate (yeah, I know, it's on DVD-A, but I don't do that)....maybe....please!

Decemberists - The Tain & 5 Songs on LP (2 EP's on one album)
    decemberistsxo0.jpg

For those of you unfamiliar with the Decemberists, please take the time to check them out. They are unlike anything else I have ever heard. All 4 of their albums are great. Extreme die hard fans may feel their newest album The Crane Wife is over produced, but personally I love it. Also if you get the chance to see them live they are one of the most bang for the buck bands you will find, and they are also one of the most entertaining bands I've ever seen.

    Happy Listening!!!!

    Nice, nice, very nice
So many people in the same device :D

I have the ELP album here as well. Guess I should round it up and see what condition it's in. Keith's early B-3 work is off the charts innovative.

Duke Robillard Band - Turn It Around
    1990 - Rounder Select - B00000035C, CD

Released after Duke's highly successful touring with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, this has the T-Bird groove and harmonies. Susann Forrest's backing and lead vocals are excellent. Good stuff, Maynard!

Dave Hole - Under the Spell
    1999, Alligator - ALCD4865, CD

Nicely done by the blues master from down under. If you think you've heard every 6-string slide lick out there, tune in to Dave. Masterful flat picked electric lead and slide played with the guitar horizontal like a lap steel. Tone out the wazoo.

My babe walks through and smiles at my while I listen to the music, and often sits and joins me. That saves me all the time of looking at that other thread and gives me more listening time. ;)
