    Two great performances!!

Another great Luther Allison disc is "Live In Chicago" on Alligator Records. It might be hard to find the vinyl, but if you can it would be worth it.

"Refugee", "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Even The Losers"...Sure, its all "Classic Rock" station fodder now...but it IS one of the must have R&R albums for your collection and it is still good music.

My first album ever. I actually listened to it last night. I love the sound of Rickenbackers.

Me too! The finest rock rhythm guitar, IMO. The thin neck profile and narrowness at the nut make them a bear to play lead on for fat fingered folks like me. Here's my maple 360, part of the collection that's on hanging display duty.

Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick is a big Rickenbacker fan and has a large collection. He's used them several times in the studio and live. He says there is something about the tone of a Rickenbacker. His parents owned a music shop here in town and that was one of the first guitars he learned to play.

    Los Lonely Boys - S/T

My wife bought this some time ago and I gave it a prefunctory listen, then forgot about it (I thought it was a wee bit too pop for my tastes.) Dug it out of the rack today and am enjoying it--primarily for the tight harmonies/arrangements and obvious influences (Allman Brothers, SRV, Santana, maybe a fuzz of Brian Setzer syncopation.) If I had to knock this offering at all it would be, simply, shut up and play (too much on the vocals guys.) Anyway, I suppose it's time to catch up with these guys again on some of their newer material.

They're one of the few guitars that feature (on many models) split pup output to separate jacks. Bi-amping them gives a sound unlike any other.

    Johnny Copeland - Copeland Special
    1981 - Rounder Records 2025, LP

25 years after its release as his first Rounder effort (and W.C. Handy award winner), still solid as a rock. Johnny was the master of subtle, sweet guitar fills with a bawling blues voice. Great brass section work here from Arthur Blythe, Bayard Lancaster (his tenor sax solo on "Big Time" is superb), Joe Rigby, Yusef Yancey, Garret List and Bill Ohashi.

His daughter, Shemekia, has come into her own as a blues singer and borrows heavily from Dad's phrasing. Good stuff.

    Bobby Caldwell-Blue Condition
Jazz vocal standards. Caldwell is at the top of his game on this one. The CD itself is one the best sounding I have in my collection.

    Cassandra Wilson-Thunderbird
She is more "pop" on this recording than her previous, but her vocals remain strong and incomparable.

It's available on the underground, but good luck finding it at a decent price if at all. It's a bootleg release put out by a Japanese company called Empress Valley (EV). I've been into collecting and trading live Zep recordings for about 20 years and have over 350 shows of various quality. Here's a great link that keeps up with all the new releases and rates the quality and source of the material.

However, this is not a site to purchase them. It's a facinating read but I warn you you'll want to hunt down some of the shows after reading about them.

    Have fun

Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin

Yeah..I know...old guy listening to a 19 year old quasi-grunge-teeny-pop-rock chick. Well it was only .89 at the used CD store so I figured WTH. I've heard her first album (this is her second). She trys to soften up a little from the hard edge of the first album. It IS the typical teenage girl angst music where the typical teenage girl listener will analyse each word and phrase in a song and apply it to her angst ridden existance. If you ignore the words the music is ok with a couple of decent tracks. Michelle Branch is still the better choice of this genre.

    Chicago - 17 (vinyl)

    B000GH3QA8.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V38617415_.jpg

Yes...that's right...the 17th album put out by these guys. (their 30th came out this year). Their biggest seller ever. Peter Cetera's last album with the group. A couple of their biggest hits with "Hard Habit to Break" and "You're the Inspiration". You recognize the songs....and the Chicago "sound" but.....The horns....they are still there...sort of. What you do notice are the drum machines and synthesiers, and the horns are in the background (way back). This is sonically a good LP. Tight and well recorded. Musically it is too pop, too slick, too many ballads (the 80's power ballads were big at the time) for my taste. It's not the raw, edgy horn driven stuff in Chicago Transit Authority (album #1) or Chicago II or even Chicago V. It's a good listen...but it made me want to go back and listen to the early stuff....which I will.

Their best IMO. Many prefer Achtung Baby, but I like this one better. There's something about Adam Clayton's bass line on "With Or Without You" that just sort of grabs you. The production is good but the SQ is just ok on this 1990 CD.
