[Yeah, "Sweet Home Alabama" starts Side 1, but the flip side was what made me a fan.

This is the 2nd Lynyrd Skynyrd athem (Freebird being the first) that any "southern boy" with a mullet, a John Deere cap, driving a pickup truck with a rebel flag in the back window and a "If it ain't rubbin' it ain't racin' " bumper sticker will know (every word by heart - because he's listened to it at least a million times). It has been so overplayed it is almost unlistenable for me.

That said this album is equal to "Pronounced". The group of 6 songs in the middle of the album "Don't Ask Me No Questions", "Workin' For MCA", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "Swamp Music", "The Needle And The Spoon "and "Call Me the Breeze" is a diverse group of really good tracks. You know they are all from the same band but they are all a little different.

    Christopher Cortez - Territorial Imperitive
    1993, Vital Music - VF001, CD

His first album, engineered by one of my favorites David Floyd, features Chris playing guitar (acoustic and electric), keyboards, percussion and bass. It's a captivating mix of Latin and Southern jazz with contemporary stylings. Sound quality is impeccable, as are all the (now defunct) Vital Music recordings.

Highly recommended as is the 1999 release "Talamasca" on Chris' own label Blue Bamboo Music.

Little lady--wispery, sexy voice. I became interested in her from a cut from the soundtrack of the movie Mod Squad (a cover of Stevie Winwood's 'Can't Find My Way Home'). Good stuff!

    Johy Mayer - Continuum

    B000H0MKGK.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V41662590_.jpg

After being thoroughly unimpressed with "Room For Squares" and "Heavier Things" I was persuaded to give "Continuum" a listen (partly by a tread here at CP). This album is MUCH better. More of a blues/funk feel to it and not so much of the sappy pop stuff of the earlier albums (not totally gone though). Maybe the pop stuff pays the bills but his talents are wasted on that genre IMO. I'm not sure about his voice and would like to hear a little more variety so that every vocal doesn't sound the same. If I don't get the John Mayer Trio album "Try! John Mayer Trio Live in Concert" for Christmas, I am definitely going to pick it up since I understand the "pop" completely goes away.

Time for some Christmas and Seasonal music:

    George Winston - December

    B00005NNDO.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

One of my all-time favorite insturmental works regardless of the season.

    Mannheim Steamroller - Christmas

    B0000005MT.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

This is the one that Made Chip David a "new age Christmas" icon.

    Jaci Velasquez - Christmas

    B00005OAK5.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

A Contemporary Christian Artist sings a nice variety of Christmas songs/carols in their traditional style.

    Handel - Messiah (SACD Stereo)

    307rev1.jpg

    FIMSACD039

    - Vocalists: Yvonne Kenny, Paul Esswood, Martin Hill, Magnus Linden
    - Members of the SWEDISH RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
    - THE STOCKHOLM BACH CHOIR ANDERS OHRWALL. Conductor
    - Recorded live at the Adolf Fredriks Church in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 13 & 14, 1982

Simply the finest recording of this work that I own (and I have several). First Impression Music is a small independent company that produces high quality SACD, HDCD and xrcd discs. Pricey but well worth the money. Recording quality is superb!

Someone in another post stated they hated Christmas music and couldn't wait for December 26th to come. That's too bad. I truly love the music of this season...both the secular and the religious.

Honk - (Sound track from) Five Summer Stories

Probably the best surf band ever. Growing up on the beaches of So. Cal., we loved listening to this excellent band. Along with "Endless Summer," "Five Summer Stories" is the best surf movie ever made. The music on this album is fantastic, with some of the musicians going on to play with other big name bands (Tris Imboden plays drums for Chicago). This is one of those "why did this group never make it big?" bands. Music is first rate, lyrics intelligent and recording, as most of the early 70's stuff, fair.

    I highly recommend this album!

This one is a Top 10 pick in my blues collection. Features "White Boy Lost in the Blues" w/John Mayall, a humbling cover of Randy Newman's "Sail Away", and the haunting blues of "Jesus Gonna' Make It Alright" -- every cut a blues treasure.

Just picked this up again on MFSL gold disc for the Wadia. Excellent! One of the most significant blues albums of the past 30 years.

    1978, Columbia - JC 34938, LP

If you can get by the dragging opening cut "OH! Mary Don't You Weep" without weeping, this opens up into a fine example of late-70's west coast jazz.

Robert Jr. Lockwood - Does 12
    1975, Trix 3317, LP

An absolutely captivating blues album, with 12-string electric guitar lead. Born in 1915, Robert was still performing live through 2004, but haven't seen much since (or an obit). 31 year old vinyl, still sounding mint..... wow!

Man or Astro-man? Destroy All Astromen

If you like your surf guitar with a sci-fi slant, this is the band for you. This album may be 12 years young, but is IMO the single best surf guitar album ever recorded with the only competition coming from their first album Is it Man or Astro-man?.

Now before all you Dick Dale fanatics chase me down with buckets of hot tar and torches, give 'em a listen. All instrumental with random samplings of
sci-fi clips from the '50's and '60's. Unbelievable musicianship and energy -- and catchy as all hell. Coco the Electronic Monkey Wizard, Birdstuff, and the rest of the boys shant disappoint.

Quite an impressive discography spanning rougly a decade until their permanent hiatus about 4 years back. Of interesting note, their first five albums (and numerous EP's) were released only on vinyl. They're the sole reason I had a record player as a teenager. When they eventually started releasing their albums on CD after switching labels to Touch and Go, it was considered to be a sell-out of gargantuan proportions.

Their shows are still the benchmark from which I compare all others. Legendary.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
