Right there with you... Little known piece of history here. Fred and August Duesenberg built racing cars for Miller in the 1920's. One of these cars, a 1923 model, finished 3rd at Indianapolis that year and was sent to Europe where it raced in several more events before being acquired by one Enzo Ferrari.

Much of the Duesenberg brother's engineering in that Miller was used by Enzo when he first started building the cars that would bear his name. In a very real way, the lineage of Ferrari began in a little workshop in Indiana, courtesy of the greatest automobiles ever constructed.

Olds didn't get the 455 until 1968. Biggest until then was a 425.

I wish I had pictures of my air cleaner top that said 455 on it? It said it because I saw it enough times for all the oil it drank up. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm going to go look for a minute.

I found this and it agrees with what you said. My car came from an Oldsmobile dealership owner. Maybe he had the motor replaced in 68. I'm going to look some more though.
    https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/mus/2014/08/1965--66-Oldsmobile-Starfire/3740911.html

Then there is this first ad I clicked on and looked at. What does he mean "not original 455.?
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-Oldsmobile-Starfire-Convertible/143116922171?hash=item21526eed3b:g:vScAAOSwx0FbhD6M:rk:1:pf:0

    Here's a 66 with a 455. ? I'm still lookin'. :)

    Another 66 with a 455.
    https://classics.autotrader.com/classic-cars/1966/oldsmobile/starfire/101002158

According to this, it looks like the 455 ( generation 2 motor availabilities)motor was available as an option. You are correct...they didn't come standard and I'm thinking the people with money and had the know ( like an Olds dealership owner would ) that a 455 could be installed for extra, paid for it. It looks like they started making 455's in 64.

I never met the man so I don't have personal knowledge OR any remnant of the cars title. So it will remain a mystery. But so many 65's have the 455 it must or just maybe, everybody back then swapped out their 425's for the 455's when they could.

Thanks John. You might be right about my old car starting life with a 425. Further research is needed though. ;):)

It is possible to fit the 455 into the 1965 body, and likely that it happened a few times, but if any car would have gotten 455 cubes, it would have been the Toronado when it launched in 1966. It too got the big motor in 1968.

According to GM's own history, The Oldsmobile Club of America, and every source known, GM did not produce a 455 until 1968 for Oldsmobile, 1970 for Buick and Pontiac. The 425 was the basis for the Olds 455, while the 430 Buick mill and the 428 Pontiac served as the foundation for each of their 455's.

This car is also a Duesenberg II. The giveaway are the pipes coming out of the driver's side of the hood. All 1928 and up Duesenbergs were powered by in-line 8 cylinder engines that had intake to the left of the block and exhaust to the right.

The feature was on several cars, including Pierce Arrow, Packard, Cord L-29 and of course the Mighty Model J. The Duesenbergs were 4 valve per cylinder, DOHC and dual spark on some models. Supercharging took some cars north of 320Hp and a time when a model A Ford could only find 30 ponies under it's hood.

The car in this particular photo was likely built in the early 1980's

Not much Tom, not much at all. The replicas are regarded as classics in their own right these days, and are very hard to tell apart from the original cars. The tell for them are those pipes coming out of the drivers side, and the center caps on the wheels.

They are striking cars all the way around. The Jaguar dealer that does the work on my car happens to be in the very buildings that housed the Murphy Body works in Pasadena. My car gets fixed on the same floor that saw more Duesenberg chassis get their bodies than any other provider. I am a HUGE fan of these cars, along with their Cord and Auburn siblings.

Think of me as a walking encyclopedia of automotive history, kind of like Dustin Hoffman's character in Rainman.

I think it was swapped out like you say. This is identical to what my engine looked like. I even took the heads off and had them shaved to stop a water leak in them. But it was red too. God I hated the gas mileage and oil costs back then. 7 miles to the gallon! :s But it felt like a stock car motor power under that hood.

Concerning the 455, GM had a rule that no A-Body car could have a bigger displacement engine than the Corvette. So to get around this rule the geniuses at Oldsmobile hired George Hurst to convert Cutlass 442's to the venerable Hurst Olds with balanced and blueprinted 455's.

This started in 1968, the first year the 442 was an actual standalone model rather than a performance package.

    The rest is history.

It had to have been. Like I said before, Oldsmobile's halo car, the Toronado, got a massaged 425 at it's launch in 1966. The decision to go with the 455 would have been a no-brainer had Oldsmobile had the powerplant available to them at the time. When these cars were made, each division within GM competed AGAINST the other as a means of producing better cars overall. When Chevy came along with the 427 in '66, the other divisions set about beefing up their own large bore motors to compete.

The 455 was also easier for hot rodders to have fun with, so as the big sedans found their way to the scrapyards, 455's were plentiful, rubustly built, cheap and easy to swap.
