The third car I drove, first one I spent my money on back in 1972. Bought it from a farm girl going off to college ($550.00). 1966 GTO Black Convertible, 389ci, Carter AFB 4bbl., Powerglide transmission (ugh!) Photo shown is borrowed off the Internet. Mine had a white leather interior and white top. I put 60K+ miles on it. Sold it to a friend in the 80's, he sold it recently, about five years ago, for a bunch. He re-built everything, changed body color to red, added disc brakes, bought a new intake and added 3-2 bbl., added air-conditioning. I liked it better black. I had this through two years of high school and college. Had lots of fun in that old goat!!!!! I'll try to find photos of mine. Nice photos and stories guys! :)

    Idgit (me).

    DOH!

Yes, it is. I should have known by the rims. Dead giveaway. I was referring to the ol' Pino Ferino's. Basically a go cart for small adults...

    Good catch!

Liked the 65 GTO better as they were a little smaller. Good looking GTO anyway.

They were trying to give these cars some of the swagger the Buick Riviera had without making it look too much like a Buick. The Rivi was taken more upscale for 1966, sharing much of its body shell with the 1966 Toronado and the Eldorado, which followed for 1967.

Four guys in my high school had similar GTO's, a '65, light purple/turquoise (can't remember the exact color name but it was unique and real sharp), two 66's, mine and a green hardtop with a 4 spd. and 5:13 rear end, and a burgundy '67. We had tons of fun; they all raced with their 4 speeds, but I got the girls with the convertible! :)

I liked the small cars with a good motor because they were usually faster and would handle better. I beat a lot of big motor cars (not all) with the 302 small block in my Z in a drag race. BTW I'm talking stock cars, not ones with a bunch of mods to the motor.

I did a lot of street racing in high school and I never had a problem with the Pontiacs, Mopars and Fords I ran against, just the 427 435 hp Vettes and 427 425 hp Chevelles.

The street Hemi's were very hard for the average person to keep in tune and the ones I saw weren't that quick except for one owned by a professional drag racer. He knew how to tune it and it was very quick. I'm sure there were other Hemi's around I never saw that were quick, but the ones I ran into weren't. Some of the rich kids owned one and didn't know how to tune it, much less drive it.

The fastest street car I ran into was a ZL-1 69 Camaro. If you don't know what a ZL-1 427 engine was, Google it.

I understand some like a bigger car, nothing wrong with that.

A good friend had a 1970 Chevy Nova SS, all stock, 396 c.u., 4 bbl., auto on floor (console w/gauges) turbo-hydromatic. It was a silver body, 2dr hardtop w/black vinyl top. I never saw another stock 396 Nova. It just never looked like a muscle car. It had the factory Chevy mags, two wide metal grooved strips down the middle of the hood (not sure what they are called), and 396 flags on the front fenders forward of the wheels. It was fairly quick. I liked the earlier Chevy II's and Malibu SS's better.

There was a lady in my hometown that had one. Lime green and beige! :o Just about every morning she would stop at the traffic light in front of my bus stop and I remember thinking to myself: "What would possess someone to see that godawful looking rig and want to buy one?" :p

Not my first car but the one after that. Stock was a 318 auto. Eventually I bought a wrecked 72 Dodge PU with a big block 400 that was the donor for a custom built 426 wedge. I offset ground the crankshaft to accept BB Chevy H-beam rods and custom forged pistons. 400's were the biggest bore Mopar ever made (Ford 460's were the only one bigger). My rotating assembly and total engine weight was lighter than a stock 340. I raced it once in the Sportsman class at Heartland Park in Topeka, KS. Hit the finish line at 11.02 seconds and was immediately escorted off with "Son that thing's too fast for Sportsman" I'm sure with a little tweaking it would have been a 10 second car.

I can do that! Every year they have an open house for guests. First time I went there I was absolutely blown away! On occasion we will have special meetings there for our group at work. They do rotate the collection, so every time I visit there is something new.
