We saw it on Wednesday at IMAX 3D theater. The visual effects are fantastic, probably the best I have ever seen. The plot is very basic and linear, but I didn't expect anything complex out of this movie. Also, come on, first thing that comes to mind is fights of native Americans against European settlers, but it's still an excellent sci-fi movie.

    Overall, great experience at IMAX!

I thought EXACTLY the same thing... Europeans and Indians being retold with the new settlers being the bad guys this time.

Seen this movie last night with the wife in Cinemark 3D theater. Very good visual effects but hey I always thought Padorian will be different from Earthlings (not killing, no anger, etc.).

If James Cameron is about to lecture us for flawed human traits, he should create Padorians to be more perfect beings than us. I don't see a lot of differences between Padorians and Earthlings but Earthlings just a bit worse.

His "message" is far deeper than that, but I will not discuss it here as it goes way beyond just the politics.

My above post goes the same for you too and you can substitute yourself with James Cameron, John! Save your messages since you are going to need it later on.

The other thing that was mentioned is that it's a modern version of 'Dancing with Wolves', although I gotta say that this movie is definitely more sci-fi flick than the one that's supposed to deliver a deep-thought message.

The themes of this movie are borrowed from countless sci-fi stories (not books, though some books have been fleshed out from these same story outlines) written in the glory years of pulp sci-fi, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. This particular theme of corporate exploitation, mercs, scientists and aliens is very familiar, but it gets done time and again because it works. Sci-fi stories are borrowed from mundane human stories, some classics, some not, but these themes are used because you need a framework in order to build a world that we can relate to. Cameron, being unoriginal, was pretty smart because he created a fast paced story with ever expanding world building and a cutting edge technology project. If the story had ever slowed down to explain even more complexity of the world, the factions, their motivations, the characters, etc., it would have bogged down the pacing and the movies would have been criticized more for poor editing or incomprehensible storylines. It's a well crafted film, a serviceable story with amazing editing, tech and world building. Did any of you critics need to have anything explained to you? Probably not. 2 and a half hours and it never lagged. This one ranks up there with the original Star Wars as a game changer and the box office proves it.

No, do you know how many 3d movies are out now including up and others. Right now Dolby 3d and Panasonic are fighting over who is going to do the 3d for the br movie.

But I can't just turn my brain off. I swear to god its impossible to watch a seemingly unrelated movie without some liberal antiamerican, antimilitary, anticapitalist, hyperproenvironment message being shoved in my face.

I think it's the same tech used in some theaters called XpanD 3D.

    Yes, for the theater.

When it hits home it will be the 3d that uses red/green glasses (forget what it's called), not the polarized type now used in theaters.

It's supposed to be active shutter glasses synced to to the display. It definitely wont be an anaglyph style 3d.

I just came back from watching it in a theater in Japan. Very good movie. Well worth it to see it twice and own it on BD.

My only thoughts of the 3d BD is how are they going to implement it. All sort of things running through my mind, but all this talk over 3d TVs and projectors being released are definitely coming down the pipeline. My only thoughts are do I buy into it. I thought Avatar was done very well in 3D, nice color palette and not the normal green blob like that you see now. Just not sure if I'm going that route in my HT.

Anyway back to the movie, excellent film, very vivid and well thought out. I'll try seeing it a second time.

I finally saw it again in IMAX-3D, and was even more impressed the second time around. The level of technical achievment in this film is off the charts. It was brilliantly done on all counts. As with most of Cameron's work(Titanic included) I also turned my mind off to many of the movie's underlying themes and just enjoyed the story for what it is... fiction and entertainment

Yeah, i'm worried about the implementation also. Apparently Mitsubishi is releasing an adapter for their projection tv's (such as mine), to make them 3D ready. Depending on price I may go for it, if only to have Avatar.

I don't see 3D going anywhere until they can successfully do 3D without glasses. For home use, you have to be able to sit down and enjoy it as part of your everyday activities (like watching tv). This includes having to cook dinner inbetween, answer calls, beat..ahem...discipline your children, etc. Not being able to glance over at the tv from the kitchen or somewhere else without putting on glasses is a deal breaker for me in the long run.
