So, if you're into Narnia, Golden Compass, and flying blue people etc. you'll probably like Avatar.

    I think I'll take a pass.

This falls more into Sci-Fi then make-believe. It's about Marines populating a foreign world and the natives that live there...

To each their own, but if you like Star Trek or Star Wars, you won't have a problem with this film.

I am just so excited for this movie... and I want it to break the record against the stupid New Moon crap that sits in first place all time opening weekend. What a joke.

It won't beat out New Moon, too many tween's going to see it for the love story, just like with Titanic.

As with Jurassic Park, there are scenes where people and computer animation interact. Technology wise, we are getting closer to the day when you will have a difficult time telling the two apart. Currently, we're limited with "make-believe" alien characters and world such as the ones portrayed in Avator, a CGI Arnold in Terminator Salvation, or a Professor X in Wolverine made younger by CGI. The CGI world in Avator is almost revolutionary when compared to Lucas's last 3 Star Wars flick.

But, I'm not sure people are ready to watch something like The Incredibles with life like environments and CGI human perfected characters or Transformers #27 with a Megan Fox that hasn't aged since the first movie.

Or with copious amounts of cpu power to process layers, shadows, and texture. ;)

Is that a yes or a no?

I saw this in 3D and must say it was amazing. I can imagine that watching the 2D version you are not experiencing the full power of this film.
I am now holding off any TV purchase and waiting for 3D TV & Bluray. I wore a simple pair of shades and the 3D was so natural with no eye strain, it then occured to me that I was watching what 3D TV will be like. I was a skeptic about 3D TV before, but now I am believer

Yes, this is a film about "make-believe" with real people added whereas Jurassic Park was a film shot in reality with CGI dinosaurs added to it.

I loved this movie! Not just because of the hype from other people and all the commercials. It had a great story line and a lot of different lessons to walk away with. I mean I was amazed. I do agree give the movie about a half hour to get warmed up. But man I felt life everything was real. Very good graphics and audio. I WILL be seeing this movie at least 4 more times while in theaters. At least once in an imax as well. Just stunning. I know you read this and think it is sort of childish but wow amazing movie. As many movies as I watch it takes a lot to impress me "watch at least 3 movies a day" A must see movie!

Amazing film. I saw the 3D version and must admit it was unexpected and absolutly entertaining. I rarely see a film twice (except the original Star Wars 7 or 8 times if my memory serves) but I will go back and see Avatar again.

Saw Avatar today in digital 3D... impressive to say the least. . if you are wanting to see it.. see it in 3D.. worth the extra $ too. some scenes just have such great depth to them. I was expecting it to look really hooky.. but it doesn't.. it's not perfect.. but 3D really takes the movie to the next level.

CGI was excellent too.. even though James Cameron will say that it wasn't "really" all CGI, it's awesome looking.

Great movie.. no... better than average movie, yes. I will see it again in IMAX, soon.

most movies come across the same at home on your TV as they do in the movie theater.. but trust me.. this one will not. you will not get that 3D effect that takes the movie beyond just your run of the mill, forgotten after 3 month's movie.

While the movie was great and I'm glad I saw it in 3D IMAX, I wouldn't assume the home experience will be the same. Why?
#1) the 3D experience is enhanced by the big screen experience even more so than 2D is. While it will be 3D, the depth will not be as good at home
#2) the "home" version of glasses will not be quite as lite: unlike the theater experience, the glasses will contain electronics and be battery operated

It goes without saying that 3D titles will be limited, but big budget movies (like Avatar) will probably make the cut.

I think it is too early to say. I know it has been advertised with glasses and a wire coming out of them. but Sony has been in talks with the same company that makes the simple shades
(realD 3D) for the theater. Also there will be different methods of 3d bu other companies like Panasonic.

The word of mouth on this has been astounding. I've been talking to people left and right from all age groups who not only say they will be seeing this again in the theater, but will more than likely see it multiple times. Are they lacing the popcorn with anything? Possibly putting something in the air ducts?
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Awesome movie, saw the 3-D version at two different theaters. One theater had better glasses with bigger lenses. The smaller lens glasses sucked as the frames were always in your peripheral vision and the 3-d effects were lost at the very edges.

Cool story regardless of special effects.

Just got back... and WOW. I don't know if it was just such a visually stunning experience that my brain can't process it all or if it's just from wearing 3-D glasses for 3 hours, but I feel kinda' high! Absolutely something you must experience in the theater!

I was afraid that I might not be able to see the 3-D because I had eye surgery when I was young and could never see the old-school red/blue 3-D, but the polarized glasses definitely add some serious depth to the screen. Not quite "reach into the screen" real, but like a View-Master on crack. I kept finding myself tilting the glasses up out of curiosity just to see the double-images on the screen, then was awestruck every time I put the glasses back on.

Story-wise though... I don't think I'm spoiling anything by saying that it's basically Dances With Wolves. There are some fine performances, but he isn't exactly gonna' win any awards for the script. Still, you have to admire Cameron's vision. What he created was the closest anyone has come yet to making you feel like you were transported to another reality for the length of a movie. I almost never see a movie twice in the theater... but I'm thinking I have to see this again.
