Black level champs yes but the only negative I can say about my rs20 is that it's not as bright as I liked it to be. The Epson 9500ub on the other hand isn't as black as the JVC but I like the brightness and pop it has.

I would agree with this, I find myself running the JVC on Hi lamp sometimes but its because my screen is considered rather large. After about 1000hrs on the lamp the image does get rather dim. The Epsons are said to be brighter and for this reason I would consider one if going for a rather large screen.

I own the same machine, but its been sitting in the basement for over a year due it is a PITA to clean. Do you have any cleaning tips....also, what type of oil do you use to pop?

As for cleaning the Paragon I love mine bro. As for tips with cleaning, I usually disassemble mine, and soak in the sink, wash and clean then back to together. You can buy portion packs from Amazon or Stargate Cinema. I love the taste of Great American Popcorn. For butter topping I buy from HTaccessories. The stuff is so tasty, wow. I sometimes use Reddenbacher butter topping too, which is pretty decent.

Is that the RS20 LJ? I was going to send you something on the JVC pjs and will have to dig it up. There has been noticeable improvement on brightness by removing the lamp, using lens paper to remove dust on the glass in front of the lamp. I did this and not only is my PJ bright, but sharpness has definitely increased. Look into it bro. I'll send you a link later on.

so what size is your screen you chose to go with? i'm diggin' the audio rack. i keep waiting for a good price on a solid unit, but that vti seems quite modular. i can custom build it to my specification? i'd want just the two tiers to keep it low profile.

dave, you gonna paint them walls at all?

    120" 16:9

I'll paint the walls eventually. Its not annoying me that much yet. Definitely going to have to be a 'normal' color, though, since its in my living room. Its crazy enough walking in and seeing that giant screen. Seriously....the picture doesn't come close to doing it justice. I'll be in this house a while I think, but 10 years max.

VTI has other racks that can go to the right or left that are like half the size, plus you can keep stacking them as high as you want.

Need a new sub, too, but I've been so cheap lately. Economy has my cheeks puckered still. Hell, took me 5-6 months to buy a screen.

    Thanks!

Its definitely got more pop and the edges absorb a lot of the overspill.

Yeah, the basement thing wouldn't have allowed me to go as big as I wanted to, plus when I started adding everything up it was more than I wanted to spend right now. I'll save it for the next house when I'm being extra picky about basement space.

Did you ever finish your screen border?

Very nice Dave. That setup came out great bro. Nothing else to be said, glad you made the move to FP bro. 120" screen is plenty big. I've been playing Shank and the soundtrack is awesome over the Pio. Congrats again, nice gear selection and that VTI definitely takes it above another notch with class. You maybe able to find a used PB13 or plus on the 'gon when you decide on the new sub Dave. The lady is going to love this.

My setup remains the same gents. The only new toy I added was a Squeezebox Touch. I put a new Sony 32" Bravia with a Panny BD65 in the home office, so I'm done for awhile.

no, but i'm finally getting on it. i'm waiting for the laser to get fixed at work and then i'll be cutting a 3 1/4" border out of 16ga aluminum and i'm gonna set it up so that the top and bottom border are adjustable for different aspect ratio movies to i have no overspill and no "underspill". i want perfectly masked borders. then i'll make some panels for when watching 16:9. motorized is too much of an undertaking and i'd procrastinate too much and never get done.

if that doesn't work, i'll just go back to my old train of thought using baseboard wrapped in velvet and affix it to the screen and call it a day. either way, it's time to move forward. it'll be a bit before i could get a vti rack. possibly just a diy rack. no rush on that just yet.

sherard, i wish i was still looking for popcorn machines. money is now spent, but i have pretty much decided if i ever do get one, i like the one you got. is that the 4 oz or 6 oz? and i came across a badass kitchen island that would be a perfect cart for that on clearance the other day. it was black and stainless or the other was black with peppered granite. too bad i wasn't able to get down with that.

nice set up! and that Pio is always great in the HT with the Oppo.

btw did you guys have problems with flooding too in your area? I didn't know if you were affected by that at all or not, and thats one thing I would always worry about with having an HT set up in a basement.

so how many of you gents employ a masking setup for your 16:9 screens? any of you do something inexpensive such as this: http://www.electronichouse.com/article/adding_screen_masking_for_under_20/C15 ?

i already know sherard will say his jvc blacks are blacker than black. but still... it's not about black, but the white screen will still have some ambient light reflecting onto it and it WILL BE visible, no matter how minute. this is what i'm going to conquer with my setup by making it adjustable. and this is on a 2.35 screen in my particular case.

Bill nice to see you on the boards bro. It's been a long time since we've talked shop. As for the Popcorn machine mine is a 4oz popper made by Paragon. I purchased from Ken @Stargate Cinema who was awesome to work with and gave me a great deal. The machine is larger than the pics make it appear. 4oz batch can feed 2-3 people easily. I usually serve in the popcorn bags sold from HTAccessories. I love the Great American portion packs since all you have to do is pour, pop, serve with butter toppings. It's very good stuff.

    http://www.stargatecinema.com/Contemporary-Popcorn-Machines-c-321.html

As for masking I was thinking of a Carada masking system, but not sure if I want to spend 3K for such item. I really don't feel I need to. When the lights are down and the PJ is on, blacks are deep with the JVC. Even more so on the higher end models. I imagine a masking system making things a tad more interesting, again price is my only concern for the Carada. I think if I'm going to spend that kind of coin then I may as well buy a new PJ anyway since I'm halfway there. The only thing I recommend is calibrate that image and enjoy.

My Epson 8500 UB's blacks are good enough that I don't feel the need to do any masking. But then, I use a pulldown screen, so that would be awkward anyway. :P

dunno about his pulldown, but even my old 65" rptv used to flex all over the place when the svs hit. but i never once could detect the movement under normal viewing conditions. i had to look at it from almost the exact plane, in-line with the surface of the screen to see how much it was actually flexing.

i'm guessing the same principles come into play with a pulldown/motorized hanging screen. what say you, kunta?

and like i was saying, sherard and kunta, it's not that any projector isn't putting out dark enough blacks, it's the fact that unless you have a grey screen, ambient or reflected light from the room makes the bare white screen visible. it's really no biggie, but if you have a length of velvet, or any black fabric, try making a mock mask for the top when you're watching a scope movie on your screen and see if it really does make the screen jump right out at you and add more pop. again, it's really not necessary, but if you want the best, like folk do by spending thousands on speaker wires, then this is something you should look into.

I've never seen any movement of the screen when the SVS hits. You can't tell from the pic, but the sub is actually a couple of feet away from the screen, with a RTi70 next to it. I doubt I'd see much movement, 'cause that screen material's pretty hefty and the bar at the bottom has enough weight to keep it still. Not saying it doesn't happen... but you can't see it from the seats if it does.

I get what you're saying about masking, but I haven't felt a need for it in my room. You can't see it in my pics, but because my screen hangs in front of those armoires, I actually have two LED lights mounted to the back of them to light the wall on either side of the screen slightly. Because the lights are so close to the wall, they don't reflect off of the screen at all, and it improves perception of the black level on the screen. I'm sure it'd be even better masked, but it's already pretty damn solid.

I don't really need a masking a system, the black bars on my screen are just that, BLACK. I can't see them at all. I have the capability of clamping the iris down for even deeper blacks.

Yeah, I'm using the fast auto-iris on the Epson... works great to keep blacks black and doesn't seem to monkey with the gamma. With my Sanyo PLV-Z2000, I was seriously considering masking. With the 8500UB... not so much. It's impressive how much they've improved the blacks on the newer projectors.
