no love? fyi, this is projected in 16:9. in my pics i just have the camera set up for widescreen shots. i didn't want to get wide angle shots because my theater table/rack is embarassing.

later on when i do my border i'll take some 2.35-2.40:1 screenshots.

well, like i said, i was originally gonna roll with 125" 2.35 screen but found that i could fit a 137" at full zoom from roughly 14' back, ceiling mounted. now my elite 125" screen i was gonna get for $489 shipped had to go bye bye from my planning. the next biggest elite offers is 138" @ upwards of $600. 138" is 1" too big and i would have had to move my projector back about 2-4 inches which ain't gonna happen as i've already cut a little hole for the mount i have now.

anyway, i could have gone cheaper on a frame. i used 10' lengths of some of home depot's finest pine and i hand-picked each length for straighness. i wish they offered 12' lengths so i didn't have to friggin' double up on the side pieces to get my outside dimensions. this takes away some structural rigidity, though after all is now said and done, it's a non-issue.

$100 or just under for all the wood that i had already planned out on paper and had home depot cut for me for free. and in this amount i got the screws and braces needed.

a 61" x 145" or roughly 5' x 12' piece of wilsonart designer white matte finish (D354-60) ran me $110 shipped to home depot and cut myself for the correct length after mounting it to the frame. i had a router, but i wasn't able to use it so i just scored the edges of the laminate using the frame as a guide and then snapped it from the other side and it's pretty clean.

this stuff is truely great. i believe it has been proven it has closer to 1.2-1.4 gain vs the elite screen's 1.1 gain. i needed help since i'm zoomed out to the panasonic's limit, thus dimming the image some. there is no hot-spotting and the color and brightness is uniform from end to end of the screen, even at the 137" diagonal span.

i have yet to purchase baseboard for the border. i was thinking 3.25" so i could do some rope light behind it but i think the 2.25" baseboard at home depot will serve me better. this will run me approximately $40-$50. then i have to find some velvet that won't break the bank. if my memory serves me correctly, joann fabrics sells black velvet by square yard for $13/yd. i'd need 4 yards of this. so roughly fiddy bucks.

so by the end it'll be around $310 for what i feel will perform BETTER than the current crop of elite 1.1 gain screens in cinewhite. grimster lucked out and got the higher gain screens they used to offer, but i'm not sure they do anymore. at least i know they don't in 2.35:1 fashion. and i'm not about to look into the higher end ,read: higher dollar screens. so, i saved about $300... for better performance. this was a family treat, though mostly a treat for myself, but we all get to enjoy it together, and i have money left over to get some things for the fam. that was my original reason for trying to save some bread from the get go.

I wanna see what it looks like with the PJ off. How does the finished screen look? I don't know Bizill seems like price wise they came out the same almost. Price wise the 125" is 389.00 and the larger 138" is 467.00. Some savings but not allot.

Seems like you enjoy it and had fun doing so, which is a good thing. Screenshots I take with a grain of salt as it really depends on the camera being used. Your captures look good though. Overall nice project and congrats.

Looking good Bizill, although I wish you could have taken a picture of the screen hanging on the wall, SLACKER!!!!:D Even though as Sherard stated the prices don't seem that far off from one another (DIY vs. Manufactured) there is always that feeling of "Look what I did" compared to "Look what I purchased". Who knows, my next screen maybe I'll do a DIY. Anyways, congrats bro, now it's time to enjoy.

here it is WITHOUT any border. the border will make a night in day difference when looking at the screen with and without a picture projected to it. right now it looks like a screen "in the raw" and will look like a finished piece of art when i'm done with the border. wait and see.

this is with the 40" lcd for everyday viewing and the next pic is with it removed. as you can tell i'm in dire need of a new a/v rack but funds force me to push it down the line. it'll hide my cable mis-management. also you can see how the center channel and avr block the picture just barely, even after i put the border on. can't wait to cover them unsightly screws!

thanks cstmar. and since there don't seem to be too many of us posting up in here, to keep this thread alive, the few of us will have to keep posting away new pics...over and again.

anyway fella's, here's a little better example of what the panny is doing. first pic is the WB logo presented in 2.40:1 on my 2.35 screen shot from the panny in 16:9 mode. there are bars (not clearly visible with the flash from cam) on top, bottom, left and right of the viewable picture. and yep, thoser are the tips of my fat toes. the second is the same exact screenshot but with the flash off. then the 3rd picture is using the memory zoom feature that takes the viewable area and zooms it to fill the screen. notice that the pause icon gets cut off the screen. same thing happens with subtitles. so movies that contain them i have to do without or just zoom the movie out and project it in 16:9 mode which obviously makes the movie much smaller. the last pic is just from terminator 4.

I'll try and get some better shots tonight. I have one slight issue with my projector placement as I don't have it ceiling mounted so on the one side its not even across the top for some reason. I notice it because I'm a perfectionist but my gf doesn't I guess.
Sherardp what are you using for a JVC btw? there is a deal over at AVS forum where you can pick up a JVC RS20 that is a close out for 2999 that includes shipping and a 2 year warranty.

I've been looking already at upgrading but not sure what to. I like my Sharp, and could get the 20K sharp used for about 2,000 but didn't know if 1K more would be better to get the JVC.

Nice! I was tossing around the idea of getting the Epson 9500UB possibly but then again was wanting to look at other choices. Just gets tough though when you can't see some of them in action so that would be great to be able to view it working.

Rs20 is a beast, in my case I'm using the RS10. I will probably upgrade this yr if JVC brings something nice to the table. My thoughts are it will probably be a 3d PJ so I may just upgrade to the RS25 if I do decide to make a move.
