Sorry people, I'm not picking sides or anything, but that words a pet peeve of mine.Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled program._____________________________________________

If I'm not mistaken its a combination of irrespective and regardless which mean pretty much the same thing. While irregardless is not standard English usage, I have heard (can't recall my source) that it has been used mistakenly so often that it is actually considered acceptable in some quarters...not sure which quarters those are. So its kind of a half-word...I guess.2 Ch.

This thread. 1433 responses, make that 1434 after I hit enter, in 39 days (started 3/20/2009). Besides still being alive, I wonder if that is some sort of record for the topic it started out as?

These threads are usually locked down in the first 5 pages, or people just have their little arguments then stop. I am disappointed nobody has earned some red letters.Please. Actually...irregardless IS a word....
Merriam-Webster should be a definitive source on this one.Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: \ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
Date: circa 1912
nonstandard : regardless
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance.
Whether one considers it non-standard or not proper usage of the english language...that does not change the fact that it exists and is fequently used. We certainly do not speak the Kings English and "American English" continues to evolve as it has since people of various English speaking ancestry as well as many other cultures moved to these shores. ALL languages evolve over time..."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Irregardless...I still don't think spearker is currently a word...nor has it ever been."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

"Consistency requires you to be as ignorant today as you were a year ago." - Bernard Berenson -
Just because it is in the dictionary doesn't mean it is proper English. Many words included in there are not. As a general rule the dictionary makers are not arbiters of proper English, but simply document what words in common usage mean.
For example, the really big dictionaries you find at the library have all sorts of curse words in them. Which BTW gave us all sorts of giggles as children, looking up "those" evil words...

Actually, that really means that I could NOT care less, because if I could care less, then that would indicate that I still care somewhat, but this expression has also worked its way into frequent usage in the United States, even if technically incorrect.
Now, could anyone care less than they already do about this hopeless thread that sent Ricardo's most magnificent Emotiva Story to an untimely grave?!Alea jacta est! -

As I said....our language is constantly evolving...REGARDLESS (irregardless...whatever ) of whether those that think it is "proper" English or not. Hell...our entire American language is a bastardization of many different languages and dialects. Based on that, here in the USA we have never spoken "proper" English...and that is just fine with me."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

How fortunate that the Emporer does not yet know about this thread. He is far less forgiving than I am. I want this SEAFART found and brought to ME. He is not to be damaged in any way. The Emporer has been needing a new subject for his Force Lightning experiments and this piece of bantha poodoo will do nicely. See to it personally Commander. There will be no-one to stop us this time!

You presume that I was away somewhere? Do not underestimate the POWER of the Dark Side! As far as this so called speaker cable thread is concerned, it should be destroyed as Obi Wan was. I have been watching this forum for months. Sad just how far things can go when the Empire does not control them. I assure you this will no longer be tolerated. I will assign a garrison of my best troops to patrol this sector permanently. Prey my presense is no longer required. -
