Looks like I am joining this club finally! Trying to play with Demi, Grim, sherard and Bizill tonight I got the 3ROD 4 times. It will always reboot and work fine, but as soon as a game launches I would freeze up.

Mantis is right though. Once they start giving the occasional red ring, they're on borrowed time. This is especially true if they don't red ring until you pop a game in and actually start stressing the GPU, since that's a sure symptom that the GPU is separating from the mainboard due to heat-related board flexing (which is the primary cause of the RROD).

If you're still under the 3-year warranty, go ahead and pull the trigger on a repair now so you can get it back before Christmas. If your 3 years is up, get yourself a newer Arcade unit to replace it.

I've technically only paid for 2 systems. But because of how many I've had repaired, arrive DOA, burn up in a UPS fire, etc., I'm on numbers 13 and 14.

I thought it was 12 and 13, but I just remembered that my Pro that my stepbrother uses was just repaired recently.

Well I have had 3, my 1st went belly up some time ago. It was lost and I received another. That one went belly up also so in that time I bought a new model with HDMI and use the repaired one for spare. I'm thinking Elite but don't really see a need.

Sorry to say, it's no long term solution. You're best off spending the $65 to have it fixed locally or buying a new one. :(

It's beyond me how people can be satisfied with a system like this with such an amazing failure rate. Sure it's a well-thought up system, but wow.

I think it comes down to where the best experience is, hardware aside. I mean, take a look at how the sales of a game like Modern Warfare 2 break down:

    CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2* (360) |Nov-09| 4.20M
    CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2* (PS3) |Nov-09| 1.87M

Xbox Live is just a far more robust service, and with everyone having voice chat out of the box, you can be pretty sure you can jump in and find some people to play with (and just B.S. with). Now that the Jasper chipset seems to have alleviated the RROD issues, I wouldn't be shocked to see a redesigned 360 next year a la the PS3 Slim. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't debut alongside Project Natal around November, perhaps as a redesigned and repackaged bundle.

At the end of the day, Sony priced themselves out of the game by pushing Blu-ray, and it cost them their lead. Were it not for that stumble early in this generation of consoles, the RROD issues would surely have made people jump ship and go PS3. It just didn't work out that way, because the PS3 wasn't competitively priced and wasn't as easy to program for.

I've been through 12 dead 360s so far. And if mine died today, I'd still stick with 360. That's how happy I am with the experience it offers.

That is very true, I bought MW2 the day it dropped for my PS3 and there were still 4 copies available around 4 PM at the BX here on base (basically our tax free version of WalMart) and while there weren't many copies of the PS3 version left, the XBox version was already sold out. Still love my PS3 though, lol.

Seriously? I think the *why* of it has already been made pretty clear. Two months of owning a 360 isn't long enough to be wondering why others had problem and you haven't.

But the reliability issues seem to have been largely resolved, so hopefully you and others will remain safe from the RROD.

Not again... Back in september I got the infamous RROD but ended up getting a free replacement since the microsoft warranty covered it. Just turned it on today and when I have a disc in, it just says "open tray" DAMNIT! I don't think this is covered either since the extended warranty microsoft has is only for the RROD. Do you guys know if the warranty is from the time it is purchased or the time you get the replacement console...

mine did this last night as well. it didn't see i had a disc in. popped it out and back in and it didn't see it still. power down, power up and all was well. this is a 7 month old xbox elite with nary a problem.

for some reason i think this had to do with the update being available for codmw2 since it was in the drive. xbox live is setup to sign in automatically when i first power on the 360. maybe it was some weird automatic update that didn't work, well, not that it was supposed to be setup to work that way. anyway, everything everything is fine. sorry if my post makes no sense.
