Well so much for the new machines lasting awhile. My 360 died last night, error 74 indicating a GPU failure. I'm not buying another one either. I'll just have to suffer the wait time to have it repaired. Freaking sux man..............real bad.

Sorry to hear that Sherard. To bad you could not do the Xclamp fix yourself, It would save you the hassel of waiting, and probably be much more efficient than what M$ would be doing.

Well, I haven't read this thread in awhile and I see it is still going strong, lol. I have an update te the status of my son's 360 that we bought him for Christmas. It has been about 2 months and guess what........... IT BROKE!!!! We had to send it in because it was making horrible noises from the disc tray, so I'm glad he got his 2 months worth of Xbox, lol. Two months and he is already on Xbox #2, what a great investment on my part. Long live PS3!!!!

I know... this is such a bizarre generation for consoles. You have the one that everyone's buying that has no games worth playing for more than a day, the one that has amazing online and games but breaks if you look at it wrong, and the one that has half-**** online and never breaks but is so expensive that no one in this economy can afford it so it's floundering in last place. It's a great time for games... but also kind of a weird one, y'know?

Excellent post and very well said kuntasensei. I couldn't agree more with what you said, but I don't think the PS3 is that overpriced for what it does. Granted I am not a fan of what Sony had to take out of the new PS3's to make them affordable (backwards compatibility, SACD playback, and more that I can't remember) but now you can get a 160GB PS3 for around $450-$500, and an 80GB for around $400 which for what it does is well worth the price. It is worth $400 just for the Blu-Ray portion of the console, it has the ability to play all the latest codecs and has the fastest load times of a player on the market. I have one of the "good" 80GB PS3's that is backwards compatible and has SACD playback and all the bells and whistles they took out of the new ones to be able to lower the price. I am very happy with mine, but agree it could stand some improvements.

Well, I'm sad to report, but my Xbox 360 took a dump a few weeks ago.

It turns on and either allows a couple minutes of play or immediately shutsdown and goes 'red'. Its RRoD 3 lights w/secondary error of 0001.

Not bad considering it survived this long-over 3 years with light to moderate use. I a bought it in Feb 2006. Yes thats right, it died just a few days after the warranty expired.:mad:

I'm not sure which chipset it has (I forget right now) but it was manufactured Jan 2006. Its either a 1st or 2nd gen. It's what was commonly referred to as the Pro model.

I'm attempting the XClamp fix tonight-I hope it works.

I'm not too concerned. I have new Elite model ready to go, but my kids were starting to get addicted so its a good break for them to actually go outside an play so I delayed fixing it and they don't know that I have a new one ready yet--I'm thinking of using it as incentive for my younger boy to get potty trained ;) .

:( I did the xclamp upgrade, alas it didn't fix it, but I think it shut down too soon before it could overheat. I'll keep trying.

You have to use really good paste to get it working right. Thats the key because the board warps and it looses contact.

I used Artic Silver 5. Same stuff I used on my Quad Core.
I don't have the pictures off the camera yet, but the original paste was seriously lacking in parts when I pulled the CPU heatsink off.

The instructions I followed had me trying to overheat the GPU for reflow. But the unit shuts down too soon, power supply goes into standby. I think I just need to try some more overheat methods, maybe with a heat gun, I don't know.

A friend of mine who bought a March 2006 (Xenon/Zephyr mobo) had a RROD last Thursday, sent it back to MS under warranty, and got his machine back today (he lives in Plano, TX, so it is literally next door to MS repair center). He got his original machine back, with the same Serial Number. The part I don't understand is, how did the Repair Center spent 24 hours to replace the MOBO? My only speculation is they replaced the MOBO with another Xenon/Zephyr, instead of Opus, and re-use the casing. Since it is original/same casing, it shows 16.5A. If so, it's really just prolonging the next untimely RROD death by a year or so (which has been my experience, at the rate we've been using the console)

    Voltage Xbox360 Revision
    16.5A Xenon/Zephyr
    14.2A Falcon/Opus
    12.1A Jasper

When did the chipset changes take place? Our first one, bought Dec 2006 burned out within 6 months. I put off sending it in til this Jan. Got back one with a manufacture date of 11-11-08. It has 16.5A on it. So far it has been used daily for a couple hours at a time with zero issues. I thought the chipsets were changed a long time ago. My son just got off after a 3 hour session of COD 4 and Madden 08. I watched a couple of HD DVDs on it Saturday. The fan doesn't seem to come on nearly as often as the first one did. I guess running the external HD DVD player doesn't stress it as much.

I have both. The PS3 gets used mainly for Blu-Ray since getting the 360 back.

I'm still wondering how I got a 16.5A console back that has a manufacture date of 11-11-08. Did they just refurb some older units and replace the stickers on back?

    ...reliability is key in gaming!!!!

Well, My XBox made it just over 3 years. And it's an early 1st/2nd gen release. It was reliable for me :D.

Not everybody had issues. It just seems that way since the problem was systemic. That and some were probably misdiagnosed since the RRoD had many error codes that pointed to several different sources of issues. Not all of them were necesarilly related to the major systemic problems.

Does anybody know how many of the 28 Million consoles sold actually experienced a failure?

It's anybodies guess, but it ranges from 16-68% depending on the source and I doubt MS will ever release the actual numbers.

The first article alludes to about a Half Million by June 2006. The 68% appears to be pre-release manufacturing data-I don't think we can count those figures. Looks like a typical media spin there. All Manufacturers are going to have failure rates, its just the ones that get into the wild that matter.

The second indicates (June 2007) either 5% (from MS) or 30% (from Retailer estimates).
And the third is all retailer estimates (July 2007) ranging from 25% to 33%

So I guess no official numbers? :(.
5%-33%?? They are still obviously high-I'm not doubting any of that just trying to get perspective.

What about the numbers since 2007, or the Falcon and Jasper models. Does anybody know any of those figures? Any sweeping reports of the latest models suffering the same fate?

We have Wii and XBOX360. Between the two, we have more than enough games' time. As a matter of fact, none plays PS2 anymore, it sits in the corner gathering dust.

Btw, with Jasper, is it safe to put this thread to rest? afterall, Jasper is the answer to the past MS 360 sins...

Jasper's great and all... but let's face it - I should NOT be on my 11th 360 since launch. Once I run HDMI to my projector, I'll be trading in my 2 non-HDMI 360s to snag a Jasper though.

I would say I have maybe logged in over --- 100-150 hours on my XBox 360.

70 of those was on my current console. So you figure 80-100 hours on the older unit which is NOTHING.

I literally turned my old one on to play a game - it immediately shut down and RROD --- the crazy thing was - that was the first time I had turned it on in MONTHS...

Between the **** Zune update they had a while back, Vista and the 360 --- Microsoft truly does suck.

Here is the answer Trey: iPod, Mac, and Jasper.

I have both in the house, and can't really feel strong enough about them, to get pissed off. I have iPod, have no complain. I have XP, Vista, and Windows 7, they are all work fine (load them with as much RAM as the slots allows them, the more the merrier). I have MacBook Pro, it works, and yes, love the alum, but I have two other Wintels laptops that I use them a lot too. XBOX360 RROD is a pain, but when it works, it's very addicting.

Life is short, Swine is around the corner, be happy. :)
