have you been hitting the crack pipe again?

I already said it... not only was he "the lock" in his sport, he is the definition of the best in any other sport.

someone eluded to this a little but this is a little off topic, but for those of you that know...MJ is a scratch golfer as well. He plays religiously, and for big money in private cash games... he is a big time gambler, poker etc, but he wins a lot on the golf course.

I guarantee you tiger couldn't play bball the way MJ plays golf. Best athlete period is MJ.

First off, do I know you?

Secondly, it's funny you can't state your case for WHY he's the best beyond just stating that he is, but apparently I am just supposed to accept your opinion as fact. I have already made strong arguments for why he isn't. Calling Michael Jordan the best basketball player ever is like saying Emmit Smith was the greatest football player ever.

You're letting his flash and excitement get in the way of the reality of what he's actually accomplished. You want Jordan to be the best without having to state why. There's not statistical evidence to support your case. He's a distant 5th when looking at stats alone in the NBA.

I have great respect for Jordan as far as being a business man, but I can't consider a basketball player as being "the greatest athlete"

Any one of us can put a basketball through a hoop, maybe not as good as Jordan could, but we could do it. However how many of us could put skates on and rip around a rink let alone handle the puck. As far as team sports go I would have to consider ice hockey to be the most athletic, I have never played and it is the one that I really couldn't, I mean anybody could play any other team sport at the grass roots level, softball, flag football, soccer, but ice hockey takes a lot of skill just to go onto the "field" let alone actually play.

I think over the past couple of pages the original question may have become a bit distorted. I'm not talking about Tiger as the best athlete of all time - to even bring him up in that discussion is just crazy. Sure he's in decent shape for a golfer, but no way he could hang with the best athletes ever...

I was talking more about being the best in his respective sport, in fact that's the direct question in my first post. I doubt Tiger could hang with Jordan on the court, on the track or in the gym, but is he more dominant in golf than Jordan was in basketball.

Obviously I think the answer is yes, but I'm not a basketball fan and don't know enough about Jordan to say that objectively. Of all my friends who are in to basketball, they all think that Jordan was the best player in his day, but none of them will say he's the greatest player ever.

I'm not old enough to have watched other golfers really, so I don't know what can be said about Tiger being the best all time

Comparing who is the greatest across various sports just doesn't work IMHO. Too many variables exist.

MJ was an incredible basketball player, and people forget how good he was on defense. He was blessed with incredible natural athleticism. On the other hand, one has to wonder how much better could he have been if he worked as hard as Larry Bird, who in all honesty was just above average with physical gifts.

Tiger has great natural physical and mental gifts, but I won't crown him the best ever for another 10-15 years. Time needs to go by to judge him and his era fairly.

We can talk about the technology behind golf equipment being so much better now. But one area people forget is the condition of the golf courses. The PGA tour holds tournaments under immaculate conditions. When Sam Snead played conditions were comparable to the average public course. Shot making was far more difficult IMHO.

ps. POLK USER said he was cheating or whatever... real simple... the day you are worth a hundred million, most famous athlete of your era, and an underwear model... with every woman you meet throwing themselves at you talk to me about being faithful... to have the ability to get it that easy...is something I doubt any man would refuse... and you can profess your love for the wifey, but until you walk in those shoes, I dont believe a word... look at the response that mediocre looking chick in the other thread got from the guys on here... give me a break... one word... HIPOCRIT..

Well then if your married I hope you never win lotto for your wifes sake. Money doesn't make the man. It seems Tiger is cut from a better piece of cloth than Mr Jordan. Of course only time will tell. As it happens I am in Thailand and the Philippines the past few weeks on business and while I don't have millions and I am not an underwear model there isn't an hour that goes by that absolutely drop dead gorgeous girls don't ask me for my hotel room number and give me their cell phone number since they have nothing else to do and would love to have a good time with a foreigner. So my friend, I am walking in his shoes but like Tiger I chose not to disrespect my wife. So I know I'm not the hypocrite. Tigers mental game far outshines all of his competitors.

I'm curious. Why is it that everyone "assumes" Tiger is Mr. Family guy? There are stories/rumors out there about him as well. I have no idea if they are valid...but I've heard them. What makes anyone think that Tiger's persona is not a finely crafted media "image" to make sure he fits in with the golfing crowd and sell his advertiser's wares to the "target" market?

MJ is a whoring, gambling philanderer and Tiger is approaching sainthood....hmmmm...

I thought this was about their ability at their chosen sport and their impact on it...

I don't get why everyone always wants to start talking about the equipment and golf courses...

If we were comparing golf scores across generations then it might make sense, but we're just comparing dominance. The other guys play the same golf courses and have access to the same equipment that Tiger does. Maybe I'm missing something, but that argument just never makes any sense.

i said in my first thread that he seems like a decent guy, but that he's probably an **** in real life.

I've never heard these rumors that you speak of though, so what have I to go on. Now you've got me curious though, care to share?

I've always maintained that no matter how 'nice' they seem in, guys like Tiger and Denzel are probably **** in real life...but have no way of proving or disproving that since on the surface they ALWAYS seem to maintain a good image.

Honestly, you'd have to be insane to call Jordan the best athlete ever. Jim Brown, Jim Thorpe, Bo Jackson (could have been anyway), those are the guys I'd consider handing that crown to. Jordan plays golf decent, and was a phenomenal basketball player. Good luck going professional in another sport, even in his prime.

And I could care less how Tiger acts in real life. I am not forced to be friends with him, and he's a good role model for the kids, whether its an act or not.

I think Tiger is on the way to being the best golfer ever, but hasn't crested that hill yet. He also truly opened the sport to the masses. Hell I hated golf till Tiger came along, and then I started watching a bit here n there, and now I play (or more pointedly attempt to.) His impact on his sport reaches beyond just his abilities on the course.

come on man, having aids ridden filipino and thai hookers throw themselves at you is hardly the same temptation as MJ has of the pick of the litter of every red carpet diva in the world.

To even say you are walking in his shoes instantly invalidates your credibility.

when dealing with idiotic statements and illogical leaps of thought, I guess Im the ****... I assume most of the people that have gotten used to my posts know I am joking and kidding with people, using phrases like "hitting the crack pipe" in itself is a joke... but ok, let's assume some people misinterpreted my jokes as an attack..not my intention.

and I know better than to joke in written word because it is often misinterpreted, the loss of intonation, facial gestures, etc often leads to miscommunication via this type of medium...more often people read your words and based on their mood at the time they read them being said as the mood they are in..

so ordinarily I would be in a good mood and just laugh and say yes I am definitely an **** :-)

However since I am in a bad Mood:
I dont know how to take you post, but I dont think it was a joke, since you said something previously about being glad I wasnt on your side or something which I let pass since I didnt know what you were referring to anyway..

but since Im annoyed now, let's explore this:

First we're talking about athletes, then someone throws in how cheating on their wife invalidates them as the best ever, an illogical and ridiculous leap based on the conversation at hand, which is meant to be a fun discussion.

so I reply with a "dont judge until you walk in his shoes comment" and the reply we all get is a "i do walk in his shoes comment"... which is absurd, and obviously demands a ball busting reply, hence the thai hooker comment... and for anyone that has ever been there knows white guys can scoop up asian chicks 2 and 3 at a time, but their aids infection rate is downright scary...so I just have to laugh at the ridiculous comment....

then you're reduced to name calling... so ok... yeah, I guess I'm the ****? but since I dont even remember directing any comments at you and you just felt compelled to attack me, I guess that makes you what... the douchebag on this board!

internet tough guys crack me up...

Eh, those who don't get it don't know that they don't get it.

CA...I'll try to go in order, so stay with me here:
I assume most of the people that have gotten used to my posts know I am joking and kidding with people
I'm sorry...who are you? You've been here like 3 months. If someone like Russ, Jesse, Mark, etc was making that statement I could see it since they've been around here since day 1. FWIW I get that you were joking, which is why I just posted quick little remarks instead of posting a long winded response about why it's not good to cheat on your wife under any circumstances...
and I know better than to joke in written word because it is often misinterpreted
Assuming your posts were indeed jokes...well then obviously, you don't
I dont know how to take you post, but I dont think it was a joke
So we're all to take your comments as a joke, but when someone else says something it's to be taken literally? Ok, just wanted to make sure. Saying something to the effect of "You're kind of an **** aren't you' has a completely different feel than 'You're an ****' - Obviously that nuance of the English language escapes you.
since you said something previously about being glad I wasn't on your side or something which I let pass since I didnt know what you were referring to anyway
Let me clarify that for you. That statement was actually more in jest, just thinking outloud that I'm glad I don't share the same opinion as a guy who's basically saying 'it's okay to cheat on your wife if you're tempted alot'. Obviously (I hope) that's not how you intended for that post to read, which again is why I didn't post a long winded response, but I couldn't just let it go completely untouched either.

I'll skip the nest two paragraphs since I can see the argument either way there, and actually would agree with you on the first, although I don't think he actually said it invalidated MJ as the greatest. Hell, this thread wasn't even about the greatest athlete, so I'm not sure where it even took that turn, because if it was we wouldn't be talking about Tiger or MJ...

No internet tough guy here, I didn't threaten bodily harm or even directly call you any name for that matter - I jokingly said 'Hey, you're kind of an **** aren't you'. But since as you put it, you were in a bad mood, you decided to take it to the next level.

FWIW, I just posted a couple quick quips to poke at you a bit - you were the first one in the deep end with your last post above. I haven't interacted with you enough to know your personality, but when there is some ambiguity about a post, I tend to err on the side of 'It's a joke'...but that's just me...

I don't see any reason you'd change your mind given the information that we have. At this point, the investigation has been closed and they're saying the wounds are consistent with a minor crash and they've issued Tiger a $160 careless driving violation.

It doesn't look like there was any domestic abuse involved, and everyone involved is denying any rumors of an affair.

I'm not saying that he's perfect and that the idea of an affair is inconceivable, but I'm thinking that this time the gossip hungry tabloid media may have put their foot in their collective mouth. There just seems to be absolutely no credible evidence to back up the rumors and i just don't see it happening.
