Hmm, I think I have those hotfixes installed already...the patch seems to be from November 2007...

Why is it that I only experience this when browsing the forum?

Maybe because there is nothing Polk in your signature?

I'm not going through this whole thread. Do yourself a favor, dump IE, FF is the way to go.

I finally got rid of Symantec AntiVirus though, since so many of you were saying it's crap.

    Hey,

In your email today you told me to reformat the computer and start over. Do you think this really requires it? Seems like a minor problem except the fact that I have difficulty installing/uninstalling programs AND the occasional freeze-ups...

Your bizarre and random problems are probably symptoms of a deeper underlying instability in your system. If you really want to make sure it's fixed, wiping and re-installing is the best way to go (and there are other advantages, like making your computer run faster). However, if you don't want to go to the trouble to re-install, you can probably force a work-around and live with it.

With the proper precautions, re-installing an OS is not really that difficult or dangerous (to your data). It will probably take a couple of days after re-installing to get all your programs and options re-setup. If you're interested, I have some tips to help make it go smoothly :)

Hmm, if I *have* to do a reinstall, I'll do it, but I don't really want to. Instead I've been trying to find whatever is the culprit (I've already uninstalled Symantec AntiVirus, but that didn't help)...

These are the programs that are currently installed on my system, aside from the AntiVirus I haven't changed anything else. Would you recommend uninstalling any of these? I don't know what "J2SE Runtime Environment" or "Viewpoint Media Player" is, either.

Damn man, running a pretty minimal system!

click on: start>run>type "msconfig" and go over to the startup tab and take a screenshot if you wouldn't mind.

    The J2SE is Java, don't un-install that, I doubt it's your culprit.

What version of IE are you using? Or if you're not using IE, what browser and version?

    Here ya go:

I'm using IE6, but people have been telling me to upgrade to Firefox so I might try that. Now WTH is this Viewpoint Media Player?

IDK what Viewpoint MP is - never heard of it.

Did you try the hotfix in the link to MS's website? It sounds like that might fix your problem.

At this point I would recommend upgrading to IE7, BUT DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! I upgraded on a previous install of windows and it permanently killed a video editing suite I had - even after un-installing IE7 it was still broken.

To me, it sounds like the problem is in IE6, so upgrading to 7 should take care of your problem. But first I'd try the "hotfix" from Microsoft.

IE7? Ha, tried installing it already and it sucked!

So - I wake up, go to class, come back to my computer and find it stuck on the portion that says "backing up files." It was still installing IE7. So I wait 30 minutes and find the system completely frozen.

Computer froze before it fully installed. But at least I got up to the point in Windows Update where it says "You need to install an ActiveX Control" or something like that...

    I would try, in order:

First in msconfig, enable all services/standard boot

    1. Try the simple restore feature first
    2. Some AV software and other programs track registry changes and can be rolled back (reset)
    3. Try the 'R' function in the reinstall disc (your music, ****, and files stay :D ) only Windows gets overwritten.
    3. Backup partition on certain models
    4. Clean install

Additional reason to never use IE: It is too much a part of the OS. If you F-it up, your OS is F'd up, and that's not nice for most people.

Hope you can get it worked out. I love a fresh install, but the 'R' function in XP works really well while saving your stuff.

Crap, apparently I turned off System Restore for some reason a while back so there goes Option # 1. And I recently uninstalled my antivirus software because people were telling me Symantec sucks.

So, are there any other options besides # 3, and 4?

The 'R' function will keep most of your files. Otherwise, backup and clean slate. . . or Marks suggestion.:D

If it has a copy of XP on it, which it should. Do a search on the Repair [R] function of XP to get some instructions. Should be fine, no backup needed unless you want to really make sure you save something. In that case, copy and burn it to CD. Good luck.

Well, I have a lot of important files on this laptop. So I'd rather go with the repair method. The interesting thing is, the system hasn't crashed or anything like that - I use it everyday to do my homework and type up papers, and Word works fine.

Most of my problems are with IE closing in the middle of a session :(
