No, this didn't happen when installing IE7, it happened when I did the sfc.exe /scannow command and somehow the entire computer locked up.

I'm using Windows XP. Windows 98 does not say "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now."

Finished the virus scan. Results attached. No spyware scanner though.

Going to download IE7 overnight.

Looks like it's not a virus, or maybe it's one of them that avoids detection.

Will find out if the problem is fixed when IE7 finishes downloading. It is a HUGE download.

So - I wake up, go to class, come back to my computer and find it stuck on the portion that says "backing up files." It was still installing IE7. So I wait 30 minutes and find the system completely frozen.

Now what?

Sounds like a hardware problem. A video card or PS problem. Or a CPU heat problem. You PC miight need a good cleaning. When the air flow in the case or at the CPU is bad, things get too warm and start causing freezes.


Turn your computer off. Pop the case open clean and swop the RAM cards, check see if the CPU heat sink is clean. Restart computer.

At the top of add and remove programs..click Show Updates

A laptop....

Down load AVG and run it, to see if its a virus. If its not a virus I still think its a hardware issue so you will need to open the laptop to access the hardware.
Laptops are not as easy to trouble shoot hardware.

Lets start with software then to hardware.

Software - You think it's not spyware, why's that?

Hardware - No hardware errors in event viewer:

Another great program is windows defender. With defender you can see excatly what is running at start up and current.

AVG and windows defender should do a better job than Norton. Lets make sure its not a software issue.

Download AVG free ware and Windows Defender.

Run both programs one after the other.

If computer freezes during scan, reboot in safemode. And run the scan in safemode

Dhcp warning is a network card problem.... Or a general internet connection problem.

The only bad thing in there is the symanctec software, That NEEDS to go. First disable it in processes then uninstall it.

You mean turn off the antivirus first then uninstall it?

I was thinking all that HP bloatware might be causing the problem...

Yes turn it off first or it will never uninstall.


There is no bloatware on you machine. Other than symantec.

I have twice the software you do.. And my system is running great. Its not whats installed, its whats running..thats your plroblem. Symantec runs all the time.
