So all the HP junk isn't a problem?

It's very tempting to just uninstall the HP widgets.

    Switch off transitions in IE,
goto IE Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab, uncheck 'Enable Page Transitions' under the 'Browsing' section.

I was thinking the exact same thing, but updating to IE7 should fix this

Do you have spybot search & destroy and Ad Aware? If so, run them.

Another option, keep an eye on processes that "ignite" when this happens. They'll blink like christmas trees. Then look at the file name of the process, and see if it's legit.

When uninstalling Symantec, after first disabling auto-protect, during the uninstall process the computer freezes. Interesting that this computer never had this problem before attempting to install IE7.

When trying to install Windows Defender, an error message pops up that says the following:

    "Unable to proceed with installation

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service is disabled."

I also can't install AVG without first removing Symantec.

Theres alot more wrong with that laptop, obviously.

Just unistall the IE7 , if you installed it. And put everything back to how it was before. What you need it a XP reinstall disk.

If its not letting you install or uninstal anything, then there are major problems..

I put everything back to how it was before, and now everything is fine. Except for the occasional SysFader.exe that appears when browsing Club Polk.

The problem with not being able to install/uninstall anything only happened after attempting to install IE7, before that everything was fine. (except for the SysFader.exe popups)

Sysfader, should not pop up at all. I would find a reinstal disk and run a repair. Bu if you happy with the way it is,,,,ok

There should be no problem installing IE7, AVG and windows defender, if there is , then there is a problem..

Sysfader is a graphics issue. I would try reinstalling the graphics driver and see, but, if that wouldnt work, go into safemode and download IE7. Or reinstall IE6 in safemode, it might replace any corrupted files.

If it is a graphics issue, could it be caused by using this laptop as a desktop?

Nope, nothing looks out of place.

Try windows defender. In safe mode.

When I tried, I couldn't get my internet connection working. Even in "Safe Mode with Networking."

I think it's because some HP network card drivers don't get loaded in "Safe Mode," along with the "HP Wireless Assistant" and other HP drivers.

You dont need to. Just install AVG or Windows defender. Alot of those "adware" programs end up installing alot of other just too, expl: tool bars, home pages, buy this buy that..

How can they not install? If you disable Symantec , then you can install, if thats whats trying to stop the instalation. If one thing can install, then anything could install..

Windows Defender locked the system up and said something about "Background Intelligent Transfer Service"

As for AVG, it won't install with Symantec still on my machine.
