Since Lavasoft Ad-Aware didn't find any spyware, does this pretty much rule out spyware?

if it scaned in 8 seconds, you did not do a full scan of the hard drive. Try it again. When you click start, make sure you select the radio button for "perform a full system scan" (this is not the default)

still not to bad. maybe run spybot and see if it finds anything, but I am doubting that it is your issue.

If you have not installed service pack 2 (assuming you are running WinXp) that may actually solve your issue. It will replace most of the .DLL's on your system and it sounds like one of them is messed up on yours....

Have you tried reinstalling i.e. (or updating to the next version if you are not at the latest one)?

Yes, I have Service Pack 2.

As stated before, if I try reinstalling IE, or updating to IE7, I get the message:

    "Unable to proceed with installation

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service is disabled."

Ok, this is the first I've looked at this thread...I'm far from a computer whiz, but...

I see you installed and ran AdAware. Good. Now install Spybot S&D and run it, after updating the database, of course, I use AVG (free edition), AdAware, and Spybot and have never had a problem. And on my new computer I just scan the HD with all three at the same time within 20 minutes. :D

But I would get those three, do complete scans, and see what pops up.

I have no clue why you're having that problem in IE, that's frustrating and shouldn't be. This isn't a fix for you problem, rather a work around, but I'd install Mozilla Firefox. I much prefer it to IE, anyways.

How do you figure on that being warm? Especially not knowing what CPU he's running?

Just out of curiosity, what is your system? CPU, HD, RAM, etc.

My desktop has been running at 37 - 39*C for most of the day...I'm loving it because it's been running at 41 - 43*C.

Dang, that's a HECK of a lot better than my laptop. I might should have invested in a new laptop instead of in a new desktop...but this desktop is awesome!

My laptop has an Athlon 4 processor @ 900MHz and 256MB RAM. It's old. :D

And I know what you mean about it running warm on your bed.

I just gave Mom my old desktop, so I'm going to get her old desktop to play with. I"ll probably do some folding with it.

I have NO idea what's in it. It's a desktop, was top of the line when she got it, and has a 17GB or so HD. If that tells you anything...

I used to get "top of the line" like when I ordered my laptop, but with today's falling prices I believe it's better to buy a mid-grade PC. Because that brand-new graphics card you just got for $500 is going to be worth half that in no time.

Yeah. Mom said we gave about $1700 for her desktop when we got it. I don't think laptops existed back then, lol.

Just for clarification, I don't have a $500 GPU. Don't know if you were using that just as a general example or not...

No, I'm pretty sure that won't work. Once you've run AdAware and Spybot, I'd see if I couldnt' uninstall and then reinstall IE6.

That's bugging me. I don't know why that'd be. If going through Add/Remove programs doesn't work, I usually just resort to going into my Program Files, right-clicking on the folder and deleting it that way. Probably not good, but it gets rid of it.

Go ahead and do Spybot and see what it turns up.

Then I'd turn to looking into how to uninstall your Symantec. Does it have an uninstall utility itself? If you go to Start -> Programs -> Symantec (or w/e it is), is there an uninstall option there?

After running through Spybot, if you can, go ahead and uninstall your IE. You can download IE6 again from www.oldversion.com. Here's a link to their versions of IE.

And no, Symantec AntiVirus does not have its own uninstall utility:

The one in Control Panel froze the system.

Can you install the LiveUpdate 3.1 (symantec Corporation) and Symantec AntiVirus? You'll probably have to do it in a certain order, so if one way doesn't work, I'd try the other one.

I'm sure they're not causing any problems at all, but if you want to, I can't see any bad effects from uninstalling:

HP Software Update (might wanna keep that one though, so it'll keep your HP drivers and software up to date)

Also, how can you get nice, clean screenshots like that? You just using Prt Scr and pasting into Paint?
