Well I disagree to a certain extent. I've learned how to soak the grooved area without getting it on the label. I feel that the more fluid the easier any dirt or dust particles can float to the top and be sucked off. I read in an extreme article about cleaning records that using the VPI record cleaning fluid in this manner is the best way to ensure that all the crap is removed and I've been doing it since. I've not done any comparisions, I just got into the habit of doing it. Needless to say, I go through a lot of fluid.

If you would like me to email this article to you let me know. It is extreme but there is some very good info to be had.

I think we are on the same page, I'm just saying if you are soaking the LP and it runs to the label before you can spread it accross the surface, I think it's too much. Plus, the groove aren't that deep so, you know, it doesn't take THAT much. I use enough that so two revolutions with the suction renders it clean and dry.....it just takes a bit of practice to figger out what's right for you.

By all means though...send me the article...

As I've said before, I use an MFSL brush to clean/scrub on the VPI and hit it with the Hunt brush before playing. I've never had an issue with static. YMMV.

    Shouldn't be a difference...

Although, I've been told by a few people that have used both, that the older versions (from 70s/80s) of the ZeroStat work better than the newer ones. YMMV. I have an older one that came with a Discwasher Kit and it works pretty good.

Overall, I think having a Zerostat is a must for vinyl listeners. I might not use it every time, but when that record comes out of the sleeve and you can FEEL the static, there is no quicker/better way to eliminate the charge.

    Darla,

As long as the stylus tracks and the arm is not jumping back and forth like a dog wagging its tail you will be OK, we are still taking members of Flattener Consortium if your interested......four spots left, HT Rookie is ramroding things, I have the Flattener right now and overall it is nice machine, has done a great job flattening about 3 out 4 records I have pressed in it.

If you are going to be doing the used Goodwill/Swapmeet thing its a great idea.

Well I am still having an issue with popping and static especially with the old records I have bought and it's extremely frustrating because the music itself sounds so much better than digital. That's my only gripe really...and I have been cleaning them with EVERYTHING Joe recommended.

Unfortunately you must listen past the noise. When I find that a record is sounding that bad, I look for a fresher copy. There are some records though that are so awesome and they can't be replaced and you just learn to hear past the noise and enjoy the music.

EDIT: Just to tease you; the higher up the chain of very very good cartridges you go the less affected by noise their reproduction is. It can get quite expensive but is well worth it. I've saved up my pennies for many many moons to get the cartridge I now own.

LOL.:p All my new records sound pretty good after cleaning and a couple of the used. I think I will stick to new from now on though.

I watched the Fremer DVD. He's a funny guy and it was pretty thorough. I think I could do a cartridge after watching it. I don't have a stylus gauge though. Any recommendations?

Get it from Sorasaund (Joe will know the name of the guy); he'll give you a gauge and a zerodust for a bit over $100.

Don't give up on old records. They can sound wonderful and they are a great bargain. Some sound better than others, some are almost unlistenable. Just don't pay too much for any older album that is unheard $2-$4 is the most I'll pay for any used record unless its graded from a pro record shop.

You will probably find that the more you listen, the less the occasional static pop will bother you. Trust me. Just let yourself get lost in the music and quit being critical.

Keep collecting all the records you can, old and new.

Different speakers handle pops and clicks differently. Different carts and tables often place all this noise off to the side or behind one of the speakers. Different phono pre's handle differently too.

I have many records I considered un-playable due to noise. Some I can now play and no longer notice the noise that was present with past systems. Enjoy the music, not the system and you will find the little problems seem to take care of themselves.
