Everything is perfect but more importantly, I put the Amy Winehouse LP and the cds I was having issues with and put them in Larry's system and guess what? They were still crappy. So I have peace of mind knowing that my gear is good and from now on I will only get well recorded media ...

Glad to see you resolved your issues.

I picked up an Amy Winehouse CD from a garage sale last weekend. This has to be the most compressed and released at the highest possible level I have ever come across. I barely turned up the volume and the music was very loud. It did sound kinda crappy as you commented. I did not listen very long so I will need to revisit this recording another day (maybe).

Did you have time to learn to install a cartridge and setup the tonearm?? As you are 'out of control', you may require these skills in the near future.

You will be happy to know that the larger motor pulley for the Scout finally arrived and should not require any masking tape. I will install this tonight so the TT will be complete - for the time being.;)

Amy Winehouse? Yes, very BLAH! That's why you'll notice us anal types have "reference cd's" that come out when we're tweaking.
My wife always says, "why are you playing that over and over?"
Because I'm testing stuff for sound!

It's a shame because the music itself is terrific IMHO and I think she is way talented.

I always found duct tape to be more musically transparent but I am glad your part arrived.:p

I actually did not get my cartridge learn on. I put him through enough trying out all my gear in his store. I did order the Michael Fremer DVD though but I won't be changing out the cart until it's time to get a new one (this one wears out). No I mean it. Really. Stop laughing.

.....Oh and I also picked up a Benchmark DAC :o

.....and I may or may have not picked up a Dynavector P-75.

    :D:D:D:D:D:D

    Have you considered professional help???

As a side note....I've heard that the P-75 is a great phono stage for the money. It comes pretty heavily recommended by some of the guys at Music Direct.

EDIT: My wife picked up Amy's Back to Black album, and I found the same to be true. It's a pretty weak pressing.

Yes, I did like the music. Its too bad an entire generation of music will be distorted from the current release practices.

The cart should be good for about 1000 hours playing time. Are you sure you can hold out that long?

Sorry, I'm still laughing. Your reputation precedes you.

All I wanted initially was to play the 350 - 400 LPs I had in storage. I am now more than 550% over budget and have collected an additional 2200 LPs; all in the span of one year.

Have fun on your journey and enjoy the music regardless of the vinyl quality. If you let this be a limiting factor, you will miss a tremendous amount of excellent material that can be had at a significantly discounted price.

Yes I did go a bit nutty but you have to admit I got all stuff that is great for the $$$$.:) I really did try to focus on value. Really.

I hear you about missing out on music but if it's a bad recording I can't take it. That's why Amy has me so upset. I guess I knew that cds could be compressed crap but I was not aware that LPs could be as well.

Joe, Larry helped me quite a bit when I got my first Nottingham. He has a sense of humor too. I asked how many questions does a $100 bottle of oil get me? He asked what I did for a living. We had this quid pro quo thing going for an hour and a half on a Saturday morning. (His son bought a car and they had some problems with it). I'd call myself but I am afraid he would sell me something too!:D

Professional help means less money available to spend on audio.:D

I am going to contrast and compare the P-75 with the Phono stage on the Parasound PH 850. Larry said it would blow it out of the water but we shall see....if not I won't keep it. Same with the Benchmark.
The P75 is excellent, but I've heard that it really shines with low output carts in the "Phono Enhancer" mode. The first system I heard that really made me take vinyl seriously, was a Scoutmaster with Dynavector 20XL cart and P75 in "PE" mode. That cart/phono is one hell of a combo, hint, hint ;)

Regardless, having owned the P75 myself, I doubt there's anything out there that will truly blow it out of the water. It's small, unimpressive looking inside and out, but it does the job incredibly well. Upgrade the cart first.

I've had that problem with certain LPs sounding like garbage too. Some LPs are noisy even after a good VPI clean, and some just sound dull & flat. I can tolerate a good deal of noise, but the dull sounding records really tee me off. Fortunately, MOST (~ 70%) of what I've obtained sound GREAT; much better than CD is capable of IMO. The ones that have super low noise and sound pretty much as energetic as a live performance are special should be treasured.

Forget professional help; you'll just be enraged with jealousy when you realize you've bought your therapist a better system than you've got :D

I have a ZYX Airy 3B SB on the way. Its output is .24mV. Havaing owned it would you be able to answer these questions for me please?

Does the P75 have step-up transformers in it?

    Does it have gain control?

Does it have switchable resistive loading?

    Thanks,

Absolutely no transformers in it. The MC gain stage is active. IIRC the "PE" mode for low MC carts has 62 db gain.

The gain and loading is all set via jumpers. The highest gain setting should be fine for a .24mV cart; I used it with a 0.3 cart (Benz Glider). I forget what the specific loading choices are but I think I remember there being 3 choices.

Never tried it in anything but PE mode; but everyone swears that's what to use with a low MC.

Mike, you're up late/early,,, having heard Mike's system, I recently picked up a scout and the dynavector combo that he mentioned. It really is that good. I think that I paid 375.00 for the P-75,,but IMO,,well worth it. Organic. :)

What's the deal with the enhancer thing? I have the High output MC 10X5 cart. If I had not broken the first one I might have moved to the 20X....
