Love them or hate them, EV’s must be here to stay. The state department has forecast a $500,000,000 procurement budget for Tesla Cybertrucks. When the news caused a kerfuffle, the line item was renamed “Armored Electric Vehicles”.

    Some additional tidbits below. 👇

    Spoiler
Okay, so that was tongue in cheek, because…
    • The procurement dates from December 2024, so it was not initiated under the current administration.
    • A procurement forecast is not a confirmed order, and may never happen.
The line item is still in the current forecast, however.

    😉 🤫 🫣

Rivian Earns $6.6 Billion Loan from Feds for a New Manufacturing Facility
The conditional approval would allow the automaker to complete construction on a massive factory in Georgia, increasing annual production to 400,000 vehicles.

    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a63023964/rivian-increased-production-manufacturing-loan/

GOOD RIDDANCE! Been meaning to complete this boondoggle. There is some question now what will happen to the federal loan too.

Rivian pauses plan to build $5B Georgia factory
EV startup will reverse course and build its new R2 crossover at its existing Illinois plant

Rivian, the electric vehicle upstart that announced more than two years ago plans to build a $5 billion vehicle and battery plant with 7,500 promised jobs east of Atlanta, is halting the mammoth project.

The California company, which promised in late 2021 to build what was then considered Georgia’s largest-ever economic development project, said Thursday at an event introducing new models that it will now start production of its anticipated R2 crossover at its sole factory in Illinois instead of in the Peach State.

So much wasted money on EV's. Had they let consumers decide, instead of them being shoved down our throats, much of this massive waste would have never happened to begin with. The market would have dictated the way EV's went. Naturally. It's been doing that since the days of horse and buggies and the introduction of the automobile itself.

Who's gonna clean up the mess/factory down in GA now? How is any of this green?

I'm sad and infuriated at a the same time.

When I was a lad, professionally speaking, we occasionally used a chemical technique to release carbohydrates from glycoproteins*. The method involves cooking the samples in anhydrous hydrazine.
Hydrazine (and a number of hydrazide derivatives thereof) has often been used as... rocket fuel. There's nothing more fun than cooking things in rocket fuel. What could possibly go wrong? :#
    Fortunately:
    1) we had fume hoods expressly designed for shenanigans.
    2) we were using very small volumes of hydrazine.
That said, they used to blow up all of the time! Just little pops, but, still...

Now, here's the other part of the story. I - briefly - worked for a British company that designed and produced an expensive instrument to perform fully automated hydrazinolysis of glycoprotein samples. They had to provide high purity anhydrous hydrazine as a consumable reagent for these machines. They had a guy named Daryl (a very nice fellow, BTW) who, among many other responsibilities in the company, had to make large quantities of suitably pure hydrazine. This require distilling liters of hydrazine. Much bigger pops when anything went wrong. :(
Daryl never really seemed to have a death wish -- but I hope he got hazard pay for distilling freaking rocket fuel.

There's 2 words to describe shoving these agenda things down our throats.....social engineering. Your right though, a free market lets people decide where they want it to go. But hey, you have no control with free markets, letting people have choices. Hopefully that will change.

Just one block from my home this very morning, I saw something that filled me with a smile. In the intersection, three Tesla owners met quite by accident. All three cars will end up being total losses. Nobody hurt, so it is a win-win-win.

That might be a good argument if it was even close to the truth. Lets look at two similar sized vehicles from the same manufacturer.
Let's use VW ID.4 .vs. Tiguan.
    ssvmuk86v1ae.jpg
    munlroujjx51.jpg

Difference in weight? About 885lbs or 22% higher. Not nearly "double the weight."
Difference in price? About $15000 or 36% higher. Not nearly "double the price."
Difference in range? About 230 miles or 95% further. Not nearly "4 times the range."
I'll give you the issues with charging time vs a gas stop but materials wise, there is not a huge difference in the amount of steel or rare earth elements.
I've said it many times, EV's aren't going to replace internal combustion in this decade, but they have their place for people who have short commutes. I would never want to take a road trip in one, at least not with current technology and charging infrastructure. Cost could be much closer if the manufacturers weren't all placing EV's in their top tier vehicle for performance and luxury.

    From the Net.
Volkswagen has canceled plans to sell the ID.7 sedan in North America due to a challenging EV climate.
Volkswagen is also considering a shift away from its direct-to-consumer sales model in Europe.
Volkswagen has admitted that it will need more plug-in hybrids as EV sales slow.
Volkswagen is also considering closing a factory in Brussels.

Volvo is in the same boat.

So much for the all in EV crap they were planning...LOL

Volvo and VW are slowing their growth plans, but they aren't exiting the market. The whole industry overestimated the growth and they are adjusting accordingly. Hate them all you want, EVs will be around as an option and they will get better and cheaper over time. They work for some and not for others.

They are a solution looking for a problem and the general public has made it clear they don't want them forced upon them for a host of damn good reasons. Full stop.

I’m all for EVs, if… IF… They can compete without tax credits, special carve-outs and billions of taxpayer funds going to charging stations. If the EV market isn’t self sufficient, then it’s not time.
