To improve on the coffee itself, you might wanna try roasting your own green beans. The rich, complex taste from freshly roasted beans (degassed for a few days) is fantastic and very addictive.

You save big bucks - 50ish% - and can pick very specific regions, estates, washing methods, organic/non - whatever you might care about. The beans are likely better than those at your average roaster, and you can roast and blend it exactly how you like it.

How does one go about roasting the beans themselves ? Is it a fairly easy process ?

Williams brewing use to sell green coffee beans and a few roasters on their web site and flyers, but the reviews of their roasters were not good ,then you couldn't get them any more.

But I have heard that roasted beans don't stay fresh for long!

Although I've never done it, many use a hot air popcorn popper. I use an older version of the Fresh Roast models shown here and a temperamental drum roaster.

@txcoastal1 , although the beans are cheaper, I found myself spending much, much more on coffee making in total - French presses, pro grinders, super-automatics, stovetops, cafe ware, and assorted paraphernalia. It's great! hehe

Usually good for three weeks or more in airtight canister. Mine rarely lasts that long though.

but I agree that video of the dude making coffee was a little A word vanilla wont allow

I have a 5 cup drip machine that really only makes 2 cups that I use the most of the time and I only weigh the coffee so I'm more accurate as my measure via cup didn't work so good .

I make it now & then as a pour over using the Chemex glass but its such a real pain that I wont do very often.

    @vcwatkins ,

    Man, you are into coffee!

I thought I was in up to my eyeballs with a La Cimbali M21 Junior expresso machine and La Cimbali Junior grinder.

Roasting your own beans, however, is really plunging head-first into the art of fine coffee making! Just sourcing the green beans is a real challenge, then knowing how long, how hot, etc. to roast them!

There is nothing quite like the aroma of freshly dumped properly roasted coffee beans! Your house must smell great when you finish a batch.

I have that burr grinder the Encore they sell, like it a lot..

but whole Lotta latte showed this coffee machine as one of their favorites and if you go here and look at this "Brazen Coffee brewer" and scroll down and read what they have to say about ..it does sound pretty cool.

you have to check out the video there also :)

Okay, so now someone has to one-up @vcwatkins and tell us how they grow their own beans and how that's the only way to get really fresh beans.

These elaborate coffee rituals might curtail one's time available for the vinyl ritual. Decisions, decisions. LOL ( kinda' hard to cue the stylus by hand.... with severe caffeine shakes ! ) :D

Old thread, but I thought I would mention a couple things I got from it.

I took the suggestion and starting taking probiotics every day and no more heartburn. Or at least hardly ever.

Also, I stuck with the cheap pour over setup that I bought and really like the coffee, so it's time to move up to a slightly better carafe and stainless filter. Looking at Grosche and Bodum at the moment. From what I read, the 18/8 stainless filter lets the least amount of sediment through so I am going that direction, I think.

We have so many options for coffee I've lost count. Drip machine, Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, French Press and most recently a Melitta Drip rig, which I love. We have a turbo unit on our gas stove top, so the water is at perfect temperature in the time it takes me to grind the beans. It actually takes less time for pour over than pretty much any other method and the results are fantastic and on par with our French Press.

Have you had any issue with that machine overflowing?

My parents bought one and it overflowed the basket on them 3 times in the first week.

They sadly returned it and purchased a Moccamaster CDGT that they have been happy with.

Not at all. Were they trying to use it with paper and the basket filter? Need to use one or the other. I use paper and it works perfectly.

IIRC, they were using a basket. They did say that when it properly went through the cycle the coffee was great.

I was shocked when they told me. I love my Breville stuff and have never had an issue.

My daily use machine is this one:

Maybe they just had a defective basket thingy..... I have all Breville appliances... even have their waffle maker...can you make just coffee with that machine? It looks very cool but I rarely drink espresso.
