I was listening to Long John Hunter's "Border town legend" then moved along to "Ride with me".

A quick search at amazon for cover art seemed fine until I did a double take.

    photo1yh6.jpg

Below is a photo from the cover of the album I bought in Austin.

    photo2de4.jpg

    then:
    Spindletop Records
    902 East 5th St. #101
    Austin Texas 78702

    now:
    Spindletop Records
    11115 Magnolia Blvd.
    N. Hollywood, CA 91601

    Any relation?

    ALCD = Alligator Records

A quick search at google, yahoo, and alltheweb do not show the brown cover art. Enjoy.

Tapestry, is also available on SACD (single layer stereo) which is pretty good. Unfortunatley the master wasn't mixed too great. Carole's mike was too hot, so there is some distortion on the vocals. I never really noticed this much on the Redbook, but certainly do on the SACD. Still, it sounds better than the Redbook. Used to have it on Vinyl but I think it diappeared in the early 1980s

Britten: The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes
Paavo Jarvi & Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
    Telarc

A great recording which is flawed by the excessive level of the bass drum in the Young Person's Guide. The engineer who did the mix deserves a swift kick in the butt. When I first listened to it, I thought something was wrong w/ my system. Tried it on a second system. I concluded that it's the recording. Makes you wonder what they used for monitors in the studio--maybe somebody's old boom-box?:(

    Cheers, Jim

J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton - The Road to Escondido

    B000I5X81A.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I bought this album with the preconceived idea that what I would hear is a blending of J.J. and Eric's verisons of "Cocaine" and "After Midnight". J.J. wrote them both and while they both recorded the two songs, Eric's are the more recognized. I was right. J.J.'s name is first on the album and that is indicative of the direction of the album and not a function of the alphabet. This is definitely a J.J. Cale album...with Eric Clapton. If you like J.J. you will like this album. Don't get me wrong, Eric is a significant contributor but the style is the laid back sort that Cale is noted for. At times you have to listen carefully to figure out who is the lead singer on a track, as they do have similar vocal characteristics. Nothing new here...nothing groundbreaking. Just two artists who sound comfortable with each other, playing some laid back music. It's good...not great. I like it.

Here again I'm rediscovering songs I've heard on the radio and have become favorites, that I had NO IDEA Dire Straits does. Water of Love is just one of them.

Even though Elton John and Bernie Taupin co-wrote it (as they did most EJ songs) Three Dog Night Actually recorded it earlier than Elton. The album was It Ain't Easy released April 1970 vs Elton John released August 1970.

Three Dog Night recorded very little original material.

You really are an encyclopedia of music trivia, aren't you, shack? They ddin't much original material, huh? They just stunk at song writing?

    Now I'm listening to....
    TheMonkees_GreatestHits.jpg

Good stuff. A lot of these songs I'm familiar with but had no idea The Monkees did them. Really good stuff, though...the kind of songs I longed to hear on Oldies 93 (radio station), but they never aired enough.

That is true Brother but what they did record was awesome. I have their two CD set "The Three Dog Night Story" which actually has everything they ever recorded released and unreleased. I think Cory Wells did most of their lead singing although all three did take part in many songs as the lead singer. . . anyhooo, I heard Cory Wells on the Howard Stern show about 10 years ago. He was I believe like 55 and was recovering from a heroin addiction. My point to this whole thing is that this guy belted out ELI's Coming on the HS show as if he were still in his 20s. . .it was awesome. . . his response to HS when asked about his awesome voice and how he maintained it was, "It's a gift from God that He never took away even through all of my hedonism!" Everytime I listen to the TDN music I think of that quote.

Yeah baby, let the good times roll! Spectacular effort, start to finish, for a predominantly covers album.

Spinning vinyl on the Carver/Innersound rig today thanks to the new Bottlehead Seduction phono stage, built yesterday. Fresh from the cradle this Bottlehead is nothing to sneeze at--can't wait for the burn-in benefits. A pair of NOS USN/CEP Amperex 6922 will help it get there.

Edith Wilson with Little Brother Montgomery and the State Street Ramblers - He May Be Your Man (But He Comes to See Me Sometimes)
    1976, Delmark 637, LP

At age 15, she was the third black woman to ever record phonograph records. In the 40's she portrayed Kingfish's mother-in-law in the Amos 'n' Andy radio series. In 1948, she became the radio voice of Aunt Jemima and later the television embodiment of the famous pancake mix trademark. Throughout it all, she sang jazz and blues like no other.

Had the day off today........President's Day. Stopped by the local watering hole met up with some friends (at about 3:30). Had a few drinks and now I'm jamming out to......

Jimi Hendrix - The Winterland Concerts-Bootleg

A superbly recorded document of the 3 concerts at The Winterland Ball Room. From the sound board with some tape hiss, but what a great set of concerts. Balls to wall and the recording captures all the excitement and ambience. Is it reference quality????......................NO but who gives a f^%K the playing is unreal and the dynamics are good enough to make you feel like you were there, better than an amatuer recording should be from 1970.

Throughly and completely enjoyable :):D:D:):D:) .
