Going classical tonight....Mahler-Symphony #2 (Decca cd) Mehta conducting and Holst-The Planets (Telarc cd) Yoel Levi conducting.
The Holst disc is exceptionally well done and probably one of the best "The Planets" i've listened to.

I put an eclectic mix in the changer this evening....

    Beck - Odelay

"WHERE IT'S AT!....I got two turntables and microphone....."

    B000003TBP.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Clannad - Rogha: The Best of Clannad

Bought this one because of "Theme From Harry's Game" which is a great haunting song (in spite of being used to sell VWs) and discovered the rest of the album was excellent. If you like the "Celtic" sound this one is worth a listen. Bono and Bruce Hornsby are on a couple of tracks.

    B000002X0N.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V60348814_.jpg

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasuredome

    "Relax"...nuff said....

    B00004WCPY.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

GooGoo Dolls - A Boy Named Goo

"Name" was the hit and probably the best cut but totally different to start the album are "Long Way down" and "Burnin' Up" which I like as well.

    B000002MUE.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

LeAnn Rimes - You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs

I'm not sure her voice wasn't better as a teenager than it is now. Now her voice is more refined and obviously more mature. (on the plus side the "mature" LeAnn has better hair and has lost the baby fat) But the way she belts out "How Do I Live" and " God Bless America" are excellent and the way she sings "Amazing Grace" and "The National Anthem" (both acapella) send shivers up my spine. The KID could really sing. The adult still can. Not much original music (if any) but I really like this album.

    Nice call on Odelay Shack.
    girl: "who are you?"
man: "I'm the enchanting wizard of rhythm."
girl: "why did you come here?"
man: "I came here to tell you about the rhythms of the universe...."
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I might have to check out that Telarc version. I have a couple others; one is okay and another is terrible.

Norah Jones - Not Too Late..... Just Came in the mail yesterday. A few of the songs are show-tune like, but the rest are typical fantastic Norah Jones recordings. Good dynimics, accuracy and of course...vocals!

Sorry, I have to disagree with you. Other than sticking her voice right down front, this cd is horse dribble. Those expecting anything resembling the jazz style like 'Come Away with Me' will be completely disappointed. There is very little dynamics behind the vocals. Other than sticking an acoustic guitar in the right speaker or a banjo in the left, most things are blended and veiled.

If you liked the Little Willies style, then you'll be happy. I've heard better song writing out of teenagers.

Elton John - Here and There (Rocket 314-528 164-2; remaster)

    114276.jpg

One of my favorite classic Elton John cd's (dbl cd set). The first disc is recorded at Royal Albert Hall May 1974 for the Invalid Children's Aid Society Benefit in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret. Recording quality and song selection is outstanding on the first disc. This was Elton and the band in what I feel was their prime. Culling songs from the more obscure first few albums makes this a must have for EJ fans. The performance is so good an there is such a spontaneous feel to it, not contrived like much of Elton's concerts today. It's a bit more "freewheeling" and the very enjoyable recording quality only adds to the excitement.

Disc 2 finds EJ at Madison Square Garden on Thanksgiving of the same year. Definite noticeable difference in the audience response to the songs. American audiences are a bit more rabid. Song selection is a bit more mainstream with later selections from Goodbye Yellowbrick Road including the quintessential version of Bennie and the Jets, also includes Rocket Man, Daniel, The **** is Back among many others.

The highlight of the evening is when EJ brings John Lennon to the stage for what is now know as his last live performance. They perform smoking versions of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and I Saw Her Standing There to a very appreciative audience. The recording is a bit thin and lacks the dynamics of disc 1 but is very enjoyable nonetheless.
"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!
