Seal: "SEAL II"; My wife loves this, I wan't impressed the sonics were awful. It sounded like the engineer just bloated the whole recording to make it louder but killed the dynamics in the meantime. Proof of this is that it was pulling a constant 2.8 to 3.0 amps on my power center when normal recordings lets say DSOTM loudest is pulling 2.3 amps.

ELO: "Flashback" (box set); Remastered very very nice, great SDA showcase.

Dire Straits: "Sultans of Swing"; HDCD, awesome 3d imaging was incredible, I A/B'd the CD layer vs the HDCD layer, the difference in soundstage depth was CD layer 2 to 2 1/2 feet deep; HDCD layer 4 to 5 feet deep. Another SDA showcase.

Jethro Tull: "Aqualung"; I hadn't heard this on a good hi-rez system in 20 years. . . it was as if I heard this for the first time. . .breathtaking another really great SDA showcase. I was completely blown away at how Ian Anderson sounded like he was singing 6 feet directly in front of me. Yeah Baby!!!

    Blood, Sweat & Tears - S/T
    1969, Columbia PC 9720, LP

Pristine, 38 year old, vinyl from the vault. This landmark album introduced a new generation of listeners to jazz by skillfully intertwining it with rock, blues, soul, and the waning psychedelic sound of the 60's. Jim Fielder's bass work on this album is nothing less than phenomenal.

This won't mean much to those new to vinyl, but this legend from the back of the cover made an old **** smile and remember when this new-fangled stereo thing was in its infancy:

"Columbia stereo records can be played on today's mono record players with excellent results. They will last as long as mono records played on the same equipment, yet will reveal full stereo sound when played on stereo record players."

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland Sessions

Pulling one out from the bootleg archives. Some of these types of recordings can be boring and repetative. Some of the tracks on this 2 cd release certainly fall into that catagory. I love this kind of stuff as it is analgous to a painter's sketch book.

Hendrix loved to jam. He made reels and reels of tapes of him just jamming with the Experience, by himself, with buddies and nameless musicans. It really gives great insight to his far reaching vision. It solidifys his talent and really shows for him it was all about making music and letting his inner spirit flow through.

The best track on cd 1 is a complex laid back jam titled Jazz Jimi Jazz. Pure off the cuff spontaneous jamming. Electric Ladyland Blues is equally as cool. Both had Buddy Miles on drums and the bass player is unknown.

    Liner notes:

    THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE
    Electric Ladyland Sessions - June 68-August 68 (ATM 224-225)

This collection continues the studio recording history of Jimi Hendrix started on ATM 109-112 "Maximum Experience",
ATM 158-160 "Axis: Bold as Love - The Sessions" and ATM 234-235 "Electric Ladyland - Sessions may 1967-january 1968", and
takes it up to ATM 180-183 "TTG Studios october 1968" (Discs covering the period january-june 1968 haven't been released
    yet).
Extraordinary Archives Traded Material series of the highest quality Hendrix recordings available in traders' circuits.
All recordings in the ATM series are taken from the lowest generation masters available, and they have all been digitally

    Van Halen - OU812

    B000002LEM.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

A recent thread about the Van Halen Geezer Rock Reunion Tour prompted me to pull this one off the shelf and give it a spin.

The title was a comeback to DLR's "Eat 'em and Smile" album. This is a very good VH album IMO. Eddie Van Halen really plays his **** off and whether you like him or not Sammy Hagar's singing is excellent. (much better than on 5150) I have liked Sammy all the way back to his Montrose days. It has been a while since I listened to this one and since my system has upgraded you never know how the recording quality will stack up. I was pleasantly supprised that it still sounded good.

The Sammy Hagar/Montrose thing led to:

    Montrose - Montrose

    B000002KHL.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Many say this band was the prototype for Van Halen. Ronnie Montrose, Sammy Hagar, Bill Church (bass) and Denny Carmassi (drums) made up the group. It couldn't be called a supergroup because even though Ronnie had played a bit with Boz Skaggs and Jonny Winter and Denny had been with Heart, Bill Church was not that well known and Sammy was new. No matter...they could ROCK! It was and is now one of my alltime favoite Hard Rock albums. This is one where the SQ is not up to today's standards... but..play it loud and it just doesn't matter. "Bad Motor Scooter", "Rock Candy", "Rock The Nation", etc...

    Good stuff.

    The Snaggs - Hot Tomato

    snaggs.jpg

A power pop/rock group with modern and classic rock and roll influences. Fronted by Holland Zander, the daughter of Cheap Tricks Robin Zander. A female fronted five piece rock band rooted in Rockford, IL. The Snaggs are an original band whose music ranges from aggressive hard rock to beautifully landscaped ballads. Singer Holland Zander(featured on Cheap Trick's "Silver" DVD, Big Hello's "Orange" LP, and Nicholas Gunn's "a Christmas Classic") has a voice of innocence and at times a rowdy in your face attitude that can instantly take control of an audience.

The Snaggs have been featured on the WB networks hit show "Dawson's Creek" and have been a "must see" band at the International Pop Overthrow Festival for the last three years. The Snaggs have had the honor of playing all the Big Gigs in the midwest including Summerfest (Milwaukee), IPO (Chicago), Taste of Minnesota (St.Paul), On The Waterfront (Rockford) and the Midwest Music Summit (Indianapolis). The Snaggs perform original songs but do have a wide selections of rock covers to surprise the audience, and sometimes themselves.

My favorite (now defunct) local band. Holland is a babe and has a voice to match her good looks. She most likely gets her beautiful voice from her father Robin Zander who to this day is still one of my favorite male vocalists. Hopefully the band will get back together. Holland is still around sitting in on other projects and will hopefully have a solo project soon.

Shack: Pulling out my VH-OU812 next!!!
seo: An all-time classsic. But my favorite in the same vein by Brubeck is Countdown: Time in Outer Space

Good music day since it's still hovering around zero degrees outside. I have to go out later and I'm not looking forward to it at all

I try to go through my entire Jimmy Buffett catalog at least once a year. I have every original album on CD plus the "Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads" box set and I have a lot of them on vinyl as well. He's not the greatest singer or the greatest musician but he ranks way up there in his ability to put a story to music. If I had to pick only one artist's catalog to take to a desert island, Jimmy Buffet would be my choice. The sound quality (as BlueMDPicker mentioned) is very good on most of Buffett's albums as well.

Fleetwood Mac: "Rumors"; awesome engineering on this one.

HDTT: ya gotta get one of these. I got the one below free from them, the sonics and performance are stellar.

Supertramp: "Breakfast In America"; another great engineering job.

MFSL Procol Harum: "A Salty Dog"; Six good tracks on here, not one of my favorites.

B.B. King & Bobby Bland - Together For the First Time...Live
    1974, ABC/Dunhill DSY-50190/2, 2-LP

Riley B. was at the top of his game on vocals and guitar, IMO, at this point in time. Blue's career was experiencing a rebirth of sorts, but nothing like his R&B peak in the mid-60's. Someone had the good sense to put them together for this highly listenable album which, BTW, was not "live" in the traditional sense. The live feel was created in a rather large studio at Western Recorders with friends and family as the (sometimes overly) enthusiastic audience.

Their cover of B.B.'s "...Why I Sing the Blues" is magical. Stellar sound quality from Phil Kaye's engineering of the sessions. I'm thankful every day that I cared for my vinyl collection so well. THIS is high fidelity.

Well im into late 70's and 80 stuff if I had to pick a genre but I like the newer stuff as well , copy the stuff the kids bring home soon as it comes in the door.

It all comes down to the era we grew up in as far as the music we like in most cases.... or the music are parents listened too....
