Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

    B000E6EJAC.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I really like the album...but this has to be one of the worst recorded albums in my entire collection. It sounds like it was recorded with a single track cassette deck and a toy microphone. There is a remaster that was released just about a year ago. I believe I will have to pick up a copy and see if it is better (reviews say it is a great remaster - so I'm hopefull).

Another of the 30 or so LP's in my top 10. The remaster is very good for sure and "great" by comparison to the original issue, but my old vinyl is still tops.

Me??? From the latest BMG batch, it's:

SVR and Double Trouble - Live at Montreaux 1982&1985

Pre- and post-stardom sets. The '82 "pre" is just the three-some, Stevie, Chris and Tommy. It is raw and hungry, and complete with scattered boos from the crowd. It launched SRV's career. The '85 "post" added Reese Wynans on keyboard(s) throughout the set and Johnny Copeland on one track as a second guitar and vocalist. It's more polished (for Stevie anyway) and self-confident. There were no boos this go-round.

SQ is quite good for live. Only "Texas Flood" is repeated and makes for an interesting contrast. While both are great in different ways, '82's 10-minute track is a must own for any self-respecting SRV fan.

Great set. I prefer the rawness of the 1982 performance. The audience certainly didn't know or appreciate who he was at the time. This was right around the time he was discovered by Jackson Brown and David Bowie. When he returned in 1985 the audience knew who he was and loved him that time around.

Yello - 1980-1985: The New Mix In One Go Vertigo (West German) Polygram

Single greatest demo disc ever. I haven't listened to this in months perhaps a year. Outstanding and a bit on the quirky side, but what an experience. I wish I had some SDA's to listen to this disc again.

The best introduction to the recorded work of Boris Blank and Dieter Meier, a Swiss duo that has had a profound influence on many popular musicians. Their big sound and electronic experimentation are legendary. The music is simply surreal and invigorating, innovative and definitely ahead of their time. This disc includes all their best early tracks, including 'Oh Yeah', 'I Love You', 'Vicious Games', "Lost Again", "Daily Disco" and many more.

Once upon a time I had that and their classic S/T'd, '71 release. Both long gone except for a vintage, homebrew C-90 (that binds like a ****). Good stuff.

More from the latest BMG batch...

Sly & the Family Stone - The Essential...

Don't believe everything you read... All the really good stuff is in this two-disk compilation, but there's a lot more "essential" than I can take in one sitting. And "Que Sara Sara" (recorded during Sly's fling with Doris Day... yes, the "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" Doris Day) isn't even in the line-up.

SQ is also very uneven. Surprisingly some of the earliest stuff sounds the best.

Oh well.... what do you want for $3.98 + S&H? And it willl edit down to a nice CD-R for road trips...

EDIT: And BMDP... if not for SNL, I don't think I'd have a clue who Leon Redbone is. Saw him once in concert. Very enjoyable evening...

Talking Heads - Popular Favorites 1976-1992/Sand In the Vaseline

    B000002LRK.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

If you want some music from Talking Heads but don't want to go and buy all ten of thier individual albums....then get this one. It is a 2 CD set and has a good cross section of 32 songs (at least one from each album) including five cuts not released on any of the originals. It has all of their "hits".

What impressed me the most is the sound quality of this recording. It is excellent! I was suprised the SQ from a CD released in 1992 would be this good. I have some "remasters" that are not as good as this CD. Highly recommended!

Hey Bruce...if you have SACD capacity...the BMG club has a 5 album SACD special of Bob Dylan albums for $25.98 (one is a double album). It includes "Highway 61 Revisited", "Nashville Skyline", "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", "Blood On The Tracks" and "Blonde On Blonde". It is a great deal. If you are interested the Selection # is 2293819. Buy it during one of the "Free Shipping and Handling" deals and it is a REAL bargain. They sound really good as well.

    Albert Cummings - Working Man
    2006, Blind Pig BPCD5105, CD

The real enchilada and an entrenched regular in the top 20 rotation here. You'll search far and wide for an album by a relative "unknown" that's more rock solid than this.

    Mick Taylor - S/T
    1979, CBS PC 35076, LP

    Virgin vinyl from the vault.

Seemingly uneven at first listen (mostly due to his vocals), this effort of all original tunes really shines when you focus on what Mick has always done best--play guitar. His "Slow Blues" instrumental on side one swelters and swaggers with tone, style, tension, and timing. The late, great Lowell George pops in for backup vocal honors on a few cuts and throws in a dash of slide on "Baby I Want You". The instrumental "Giddy-Up" opens side two with a decidedly jazz fusion groove, with the side finished in an "A Minor" blues.

Hey shack... no SACDP here as yet, but they're hybrids. The Dylan set has been in my cart for a while now. Never had been big on Dylan, but a while ago I BMG'd the Highway 61 Revisted SACD and was blown away by the SQ and the performance. While a blind Love and Theft buy brought me back to earth on Robbie Z, I'll take the the plunge on the set you mentioned sooner or later... but thanks anyway for the heads up...

Heartily agree on your Sand in the Vasiline recommendation. If you're a Heads fan, nab the DVD of Stop Making Sense, if you can find it. It has been OOP a while now. If not, I'll throw it in the Accord come road trip time.

More from the BMG big box....

Paul Desmond - The Paul Desmond Quartet Live

Best known, if known at all, as "the guy who played alto sax for Dave Brubeck", Desmond was always a lot more. He wrote Brubeck's most famous tune, "Take Five", and had a 20+ year career of his own after Brubeck.

...Live was recorded in late '75, only 1-1/2 years before Paul passed. The double LP release is scrunched onto one, very full CD. Total running time 79:17.

This is really good stuff, but take note. The first 20 seconds or so might have you wanting your money back as you learn that remastering can only go so far. The master tape hiss-s-s-s-s is staggeringly loud. But hang in there and it will all but dissappear as you sink into the music.

It's been years (decades?) since I've had to make the journey through Hiss Alley to get to the tunes, Sometimes it used to take effort to get there. But forget that... this set is so engaging that the trip is effortless.

EDITED for BRAINFART: Time Out was the Brubeck LP, "Take Five" was THE track... and yes it's here, but with guitar sub-ing for Brubeck's piano part.... Kinda interesting.

Sheffield Track Record, Harry Pearson from TAS said in 1982 that this was the best LP he ever heard. I think it is one of the best I've ever heard and it does challenge you cartridge/tonearm combo. It sounded awesome.

MFSL: Earth, Wind, & Fire; "That's The Way Of The World" A great LP. This version of it is very laid back but once you crank it up it surely makes up for that laid back feeling.

So Tonight That I Might See - Mazzy Star

A breathtakingly beautiful album that can best be described as a lullaby for grown-ups. At turns aching and dreamy, the band captures a kind of ephemeral twilight through a blend of fuzzy guitars, haunting vocals, chimes, etc. Best known for the song Fade Into You, the rest of the album builds upon this song to create a satisfying a whole of an album. Both conceptual thematically and stylistically.

    A timeless classic.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
