    Jackson Browne - Hold Out

    B000002GX2.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Originally recorded in 1980 it it has some audio clues of the times. "Disco Apocalypse" is a prime example using the distinctive four/four bass drum beat that was the core of most disco music. "That Girl Could Sing", "Call It A Loan" and "Hold On Hold Out" are really nice cuts. I like all of Jackson Browne's first 7 albums alot and this one falls squarely in that category. When I bought a new car in 1980 that had my first cassette player this was one of the 2 cassettes I bought that first day.

Now for the downside. This CD was released in 1990 and is one of the most compressed CDs I have encountered recently. It literally sounds like a blanket has been thrown over the speakers. It is far from unlistenable and it appears to be a well recorded CD but the digital mastering leaves much to be desired. There is a Japanese remaster that came out a couple of years ago or I may see if I can find a LP. I really like the album but the CD could be better.

The Clash: "Combat Rock" LP; Epic Records FE 37689 AL 37689

    1982 CBS Inc.

This LP is mixed so well that it is enjoyable even listening to songs that I don't particularly like. Another LP restored to its former glory.

One of my all time faves...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

The Rolling Stones; "Some Girls"; LP Rolling Stones Records COC 39108

A decent engineering job, much, much better than Goats Head Soup. . .

The Rolling Stones; "Emotional Rescue"; LP Rolling Stones Records COC 16015

    Great mix job.

One thing I've noticed about Stones LPs is that although the soundstage doesn't go out much past the speaker side (only on a song or two), the imaging between the speakers is crisp and pinpoint.

    Prince - 1999 LP

I'm not a big Prince fan, but respect him for being fresh, and original. One thing that continues to amaze me is that I can listen to his early 80's albums like 1999 or Purple Rain and forget that I'm listening to 80's music. It still has a modern sound after 20 plus years. Good stuff!

David Bowie - Best of Bowie

    B00006JYI7.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I was actually looking for the SACD of "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" and found this CD. I realized that I have very little Bowie in my collection and while I really didn't want to buy the entire catalog (I'm not that big of a Bowie fan) this would be a pretty good alternative. It contains most of his "hits" and notable tracks. If you don't mind that a few are the "radio" cuts rather than the album cuts, this is a quite comprehensive 2 disc compilation of Bowie's work. Probably not enough for the serious Bowie fan (but they probably have all the albums anyway) but good enough for me. SQ and remastering are pretty good as well. (I still haven't gotten the Ziggy SACD yet, but it is on the list to buy). Here is the track list.

    Disc 1
    1. Space Oddity
    2. The Man Who Sold The World
    3. Changes
    4. Life On Mars?
    5. Moonage Daydream
    6. Suffragette City
    7. Ziggy Stardust
    8. All The Young Dudes
    9, The Jean Genie
    10. Panic In Detroit
    11. Rebel, Rebel
    12. Diamond Dogs
    13. Young Americans
    14. Fame
    15. Golden Years
    16. TVC15
    17. Sound and Vision
    18. Heroes
    19. D.J.

    Disc 2
    1.Ashes To Ashes
    2. Fashion
    3. Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)
    4. Under Pressure
    5. Cat People (Putting Out Fire)
    6. Let's Dance
    7. China Girl
    8. Modern Love
    9. Blue Jean
    10. This is Not America
    11. Dancing In The Streets
    12. Absolute Beginners
    13. Time Will Crawl
    14. Under The God
    15. Jump They Say
    16. The Heart's Filthy Lesson
    17. I'm Afraid Of Americans
    18. Thursday's Child
    19. Slow Burn

    Tabula Rasa
Vishwa Mohan Bhatt With Bela Fleck and Jie Bing Chen

Combination of Bhatt on the Sitar and Bela on Banjo, Chen plays a erh-hu (think of the background music to something like Crouching Tiger). Very light stuff, perfect for blocking everything else out here at work. Fantastically recoreded! Gotta love that they devote an entire page of the liner notes to the recording and mastering equipment. This is my first experience with Water Lily Acoustics but I don't think it will be my last.

I can't really say rare....I can't really say what the hell it is....Its an unreleased copy of David Gilmore performing "Money" live. I have a VERY close friend that does video production and was able to get a copy of this from him. Its a video with excellent sound that was done for MTV that was never released for air. I'm not really sure if it goes further than a few people? I do know it sounds great and the video is awesome. It's in mpeg format but the original is still in my friends hands and is being re-mastered for me as I write. Forgot I had this until last night. I'll be more than happy to share if anyone is interested. But the mastered copy to be reworked my take a while.

    madonnaiccf8.jpg

I can't really call myself a Madonna fan, or even a Pop music fan for that matter, but on rare occasions when I've found myself to be in a goofy mood I would throw in this disc. I always thought it sounded pretty good.... But then one day my wife (BTW: She's a Madonna fan) and I were in the local music store and stumbled across this album on new vinyl. I somewhat jokingly pointed it out to my wife. That was when she informed me that I was buying it. I wasn't thrilled at the idea of spending money on a Madonna album that we already had on CD, but figured, what the heck, it's not often the Mrs. picks out vinyl. When we got home she was pretty anxious to listen to it, and since I'm a fan of keeping the wife happy, that's just what we did. So I cued it up and sat down with her. Within the first few seconds of the first song she was groovin', and I was sitting there with my jaw on the floor. This album sounds amazing on vinyl! The vocals are much less shrill. Imaging is much more focused, and for some reason reaches way beyond the edge of the speakers. In fact the echo effect that is used in the song Vogue would make you swear you're hearing side surround speakers. For anyone who has a TT, a few extra dollars, and doesn't mind some classic Pop now and then, I would definitely recommend picking this up.
