Holst - The Planets on DG vinyl by Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic

I have several versions of The Planets but this one just may be my favorite. I haven't heard one that I dislike. If you don't own a version of this, it's a must have even if you don't like classical. I would also recommend the Susskind/St Louis Symphony version or the Mehta/Los Angeles Philharmonic versions as well.

The Susskind has been released on SACD and is supposed to be very good, I have it on vinyl and the vinyl is top notch.

Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense," AWESOME!!! David Byrne and the crew were performing in my family room!!!! The imaging and soundstaging on this live recording is incredible . . .at one point during Once In a Lifetime, I jump out of the chair the realizm startled me.

Mapleshade Records: Tao Ruspoli, stunning Spanish guitar. . . it was like he was sitting down playing 6 feet in front of me I could hear his fingers zipping over the strings. I could feel the punch of the string plucks.

These 1.2 TLs are just wonderfully magnificant!

Yep, it always been one of my standard demo disc's. I've mentioned here in this thread on at least 2 occasions what an incredible recording this one is and the music ain't bad either.

Music choice (digital cable) JAZZ channel.

I'm still amazed how good the digital content sounds. I'm sure it's compressed, perhaps not as much as other limited bandwidth receivers, and it's going thru a noisy cable box and I'm ashamed to admit I'm using a 10 foot plain Jane IC cable to the tuner input on the pre.

But for lazy Sunday morning music while working around the house it is quite pleasing. Can't beat the $5 extra per month to have roughly 100 music channels to choose from commercial free.

This is one of the top cult concert movies ever made! They really rip it up.

Norm, what type of music, voice, does she play an instrument, etc. I'm a sucker for a great female vocalist so I'm always on the lookout for new material.

Tina is somewhat like Sheryl Crow, only with a better, more sultry voice.
A little pop but not ordinary.

    Madonna - Ray of Light

I know what your saying, but this is an excellently recorded album. She really put some effort into making this right, and it shows. Good bass lines, some interesting effects, and you have to admit that Madonna has great vocal talent.

One of my fave party discs. Can't say I'd agree on the quality of the recording. For a dance beat album it's alright, but mostly it's all synthesized and the bass is very boomy and her vocals have annoying resonance (no doubt they wanted that effect). Somehow despite these shortcomings I can enjoy it a lot for what it is. A mildly veiled techo beat dance disc. ;)

Folklore is actually not too bad (somehwat eclectic hip hopish beats, lots of instruments). It's got a great groove to it :D . I find myself really tapping my toes (so to speak) to that Nelly Furtado cd.

Ok. Year of the Cat just came on the old radio... and i really, really like the long intro on this song.. I think it starts would with just a piano, then other instruments are added.. there seems to be two versions. one with a short into. and the one I like with the long into. Lovely stuff to hear. I was impressed how good it sounded just on the FM dial. :D

    Tori Amos-From the Choirgirl Hotel

"...For a good chunk of FROM THE CHOIRGIRL HOTEL, she nestles her piano and melodies in the sinewy thump, junkyard percussion, and guitar noir of trip-hop. And what an ideal match: Amos' vocal quirks, trills, and orgasmic-soprano moans add personality to what can often be dull music..."

So I may be living in the 90's, but I've taken a liking to Dave Matthews lately. Most of his stuff sounds just great on the SDA's, and it's very full-range and well composed music.

Also, I've been listening to Muse quite a bit. Most probably haven't heard of them, as they're a British rock band. A lot of their stuff is harder.... I usually listen to it if I want something loud and powerful (typically on my way home from work in the car).

I've had Absolution on repeat all day at work on several occasions. I'm very anxious to pick up some of their other stuff one of these days. Absolution is an utterly stunning disc that grows on you with time.

now: Saul Stokes - Zo Pilots http://www.discogs.com/release/209230 - One of my all time favorite albums - it just hits me right every time I hear it. A very ambient electronic album - more on the beat side than drifty ambient. Analog - mostly recorded on modular synths he built. We've worked on a few smaller projects together over the years. Definitely worth checking out if you like ambient or synth music... http://www.saulstokes.com

was: Radian - Juxtaposition http://www.discogs.com/release/316926 - bass, drums, synth/computer trio out of (I think) Vienna. They take feedback into very melodic atmospheric territory - grounded with the live bass and drums feel (as opposed to very drum machine/synthy...). Somewhat in Pan Sonic territory - at least when Pan Sonic is being more mellow.

    ...

    On earlier posts...

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense - wow - I played that cassette to death. A perfect concert.

Madonna's Ray of Light - there are a few good tracks on that - especially the title track. Not one that I go seeking out to listen to, but I don't mind when my wife's in the mood for it. Her most recent one (well, I think it was the most recent one - the one where she goes back to disco fasions...) had some good moments as well. She usually manages to pull in a good producer to take her in slightly different directions.

I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I started off the night with just a whole lot of different genre's for backround music while my wife and I put up some wall hangings and cleaned out another room (well almost) of boxes.

But then I settled down and did some real relaxing listening, incredibly great sounding recordings and performances with:

Proprius- Arne Domnerus Group - "Good Vibes." This is part three (if you don't have the double disc set) of the Jazz at the Pawnshop recordings and they really cook and jam as well as showcase the 1.2 TL's abilities. This system tonight presented the stage as Gert Palmcrantz (recording engineer) describes it, "a tight small stage with five genius' crammed together." (paraphrased). Gert's recording and engineering of these live sessions are incredible and the rig tonight did this recording justice. AWESOME

    Next was:

Johnny Cash - "16 biggest Hits" Almost all the songs seemed to have been taken from different recording sessions and a couple are live. I gotta tell you the 1.2 TLs were presenting a different soundstage on each song but the imaging was pinpoint and very wide on some tracks. Three were out to the side walls which are over 5' from each speaker. Johnny Cash was just an awesome artist and this disc showcases alllllllllllllllllllllllllll his talents.

    I'm lovin' it.

Charlotte Martin-Live at Jammin Java-Vienna,VA(11-5-05). One of my new discoveries. She has a few cd's out independent. Very much in the vein of a Fiona Apple or Tori Amos or Jewel. She plays piano and has a very lovely voice. Not like the pop music of say a Vanessa Carlton. Live Music Org. allows live recordings (with artist permission) to be uploaded and then dl's by fans. Most are offered in both FLAC and mp3 format. I've dl'd a few of her more interesting and well recorded shows (in FLAC of course). This is one of them. Excellent amatuer recording of a fantastic show.

I'm always searching thru this very large archive website and dl'ing stuff that sounds interesting. It's really hit or miss.......more miss actually. I had heard of Charlotte before I discovered the site and had 2 of her cd's already. The live performances are really good.

Add - Kate Bush and Sarah McLachlan as influences too.
