Snow is snow. My only problem is when it starts falling, the other 99% of the population lose their **** and forget how to drive.
You can always move to Florida to get away from it but then we'd have a thread "This is not a good summer" due to hurricanes and tropical storms. I hear Qatar is nice year round......Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!! -

1) Where the fug is Derwood? Is one of those fabled places like Olney that us Baltimorons of the 1960s and 70s heard rumors of - like Atlantis and Eldorado - but never saw in the flesh, nor even observed credible evidence of its existence? ;-)
2) The eighteen-wheelers' gots a plan - those soft little Toyotas and Subarus and BMWs, with their "crush zones" and dozens of air bags, will provide just enough cushion for the big trucks to safely bring 'em to a stop when the goin' gets tough. ;-)
Seems like a good time to quote Patty Larkin's great song Me and that Train. And trucks were sliding sideways like sons of b!tches
They were putting on their tire chains, rolling into ditches
And I crawled on by, like God was throwing the switches
For me and that train -

It never ceases to amaze me. This morning I'm driving to work and its snowing pretty good, semi's all over the place on the interstate and lots of these morons don't even have their lights on. And they're tailgating like crazy, even behind the snowplow. Wish I had a neon sign in my back window that could read my thoughts, but then I'd probably be the one arrested for disorderly conduct or something. I try to avoid the busiest times on the road, and its still the land of stupid.

Looks like Raleigh got hit as bad as Charlotte did.

I used to think only southerners didn't know how to drive in the snow, but this morning I went to the Post Office, and then to the Mini-Mart which was an additional 5 miles further. 1" of snow, roads were slippery, my Grand Cherokee was performing flawlessly in all-wheel-drive. There were maybe 5 other vehicles on the road during this short trip. One jackass was behind me for the entire 5 miles from the PO to the Mini-Mart. He was literally crawling up my a** the entire way. Thankfully I didn't have to stop or swerve to avoid anything or he'd be sitting in my cargo space. Where do these people come from? Do you not know to slow down on slippery roads? Were you not taught at least 2 car lengths per 10 MPH in bad weather? He was in an old rear wheel drive clunker to boot.Home Theater/2 Channel:

I miss the days of driving just for fun when it snowed up in Virginia. You could slide sideways, spin out, do doughnuts and be in complete control the entire time. Down here, I wouldn't even attempt it anymore. One mistake and you are 50 feet off your projected path and there is comparatively no room for error. You are not in control. Not defending.....just sayin'. For some reason, there is a difference and it's a difference I can not explain.

We are getting pounded with snow in NC. Love it!!! I need to go get a sled from a neighbor kid and hit the hills!

^ Interesting thoughts Tom. I grew up in the foothills of the mountains of eastern TN so I've had some experience with snow but nothing like our northern neighbors. It does get quite slick and really can go from decent (like yesterday around 5:30) to almost undriveable within 30 minutes. By 6pm, I decided to go get the wife from work at the hospital when she got off at 7pm and leave her car there. It was sketchy for the trip home of only 5 miles.
The hilly terrain and elevation changes throughout the area as well as the interstates being graded for draining of thunderstorm runoff makes things problematic (as well as those that have their heads up their arses). I've driven a 78 Nova rear wheel drive v8 with studded tires over the mountain to Asheville when 4x4's were lining the ditches and also get around well in my Mazda 3 hatch now. The biggest issue is other drivers. When it's deserted out, I'm able to keep momentum up to make it up inclines and use the transmission to slow down while going downhill and feel comfortable going just about anywhere. Then you get everyone else around you in the same conditions and it's impossible to go anywhere due to cars stuck in the middle of the road and no one maintains a safe distance between other cars resulting in the inevitable fender benders.2-ch System: Parasound P/LD 2000 pre, Parasound HCA-1000 amp, Parasound T/DQ Tuner, Phase Technology PC-100 Tower speakers, Technics SL-1600 Turntable, Denon 2910 SACD/CD player, Peachtree DAC iT and X1asynchorus USB converter, HSU VTF-3 subwoofer. -

I just have to laugh at my oldest step-son. He moved back to NC just after Christmas and has been razzing us about the cold and snow here in Wisconsin. Looks like it finally caught up to him.

Well, much of this is true. They are simply not accustomed to it. With that said, I grew up in DC and learned to drive in this stuff. What I have observed since moving down here is that the snow is different down here. I can't explain why, perhaps wetter, but it is. I could drive in one foot of snow in Virginia with little to no issues. Yesterday at 12:00pm, I had a hard time driving with new tires in less than 3" of snow mixed with a little freezing rain. I can tell you one thing for sure, the snow is much more slippery down here and for some reason it seems to compact differently then in Virginia.

I believe the reason is it may compact differently is the moisture in the air. Wet snow compacts like it was ice. That dry fluffy snow is easy to navigate.
As far as differences go....lol, people are idiots that's the difference. No amount of information or legislation can change that. For the life of me, I can't figure out these pics from down south especially a week after being hit with a similar storm. Stay the f**K home.HT SYSTEM-

tonyb- agree that Atlanta and Charlotte as well as Raleigh looked pretty clueless. Unfortunately most in the south don't have the opportunity's to get any practice in car control in snow or ice and the results speak for themselves. It's a little better in my area, but not by much. Plenty of bubba's with 4x4's that don't understand physics in the least.
I was lucky my dad made me drive in all conditions when learning and took the time to give me opportunities to drive in snow and ice when I got my permit. When I turned 15 and started driving, I became mom and dad's taxi going everywhere with dad in my ear constantly telling me what to do and not do (and why). He was a tactical driving instructor for police officers and gave me experience in high performance cars, some scca regional races and was an extremely harsh critic. It wasn't easy, but the results paid off and are worth it today.
Most people don't have the hands on teaching from a qualified driver nor do they actually care about their level of competency behind the wheel. Point A to Point B while jamming to tunes, texting, talking on the phone and basically oblivious to their surroundings is the norm. That **** don't work in the snow..........
My wife works as a nurse so she has to make it in to work. Her skills being questionable I had to take her in this morning or I probably would have stayed home and off the road. Here's a few pics from the morning commute..

Here is a good example of the differences between southern driving conditions versus northern driving conditions.....notice the ever so slight grade on the road.....

Grade of the road doesn't mean much Tom...like we don't have hills up north ? Difference is no snow plows or salt trucks. Up north we prepare for such, down south your caught with your pants down because there was never a need to prepare. That's gonna change.
That also means guess who is going to pay for that preparedness ? That's a lot of trucks and personnel to cover that large of an area.HT SYSTEM-

Not necessarily, Tony. You would be surprised at the amount of preparedness we have down here. They started laying down the brine two days before the snow ever started. The major thoroughfares got hit twice before the first snowflake ever hit the ground and when it did, the snowplows were out in force. I guess what I was trying to say was that when I was up north, a simple uphill grade like this was no problem, especially with limited snow on the ground. Take another look at the picture. If you were in Virginia or Maryland with less than 3" of snow on the ground, with a slight grade like this, would you ever expect to see an image like this? I sure wouldn't.
Perhaps with a foot and a half of snow on the ground on a severe grade, yes. But this? Even on severe grades [not exceptional], I generally had no issues up North. Down here? Eh, if it's a grade of 3-5% or more....you may want to give up before you slide back down into a tree or a house. Up there? Gas that baby and have some fun!!!

I dunno pal, laws of Physics don't change for geographical areas. Could be the asphalt they use down there for roads or the thickness of it that might help ice to form quicker or stick better. Different asphalt mixtures have different priorities.
Or could be people just need to stop driving on bald tires...LOL.HT SYSTEM-

...up here, the traction enhancer of choice is grit (sand and very fine gravel)
Most of the time, salt isn't too useful up this far; it's often too cold for it to melt ice effectively.
The hill on the (dirt) road outside of our house is quite steep - the town pre-grits it and will grit it a time or two during the storm... if they didn't, almost none of the folks who live further up the hill would be gettin' back up there today if they went down this morning.
