It won't, believe me, you're better off with a nicer amp. There are no short cuts or band aids in this hobby. You can't polish a **** no matter how hard you try.

No. Just a thought...Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -
I predict your plan will be to sell the Emo and get a different amp and nice tube pre-amp. Don;t use the tube pre-amp as a band aid for a mediocre amp, I'm just saying............I can see the wheels spinning in your head about keeping a very average amp and trying to will it to sound like you want with tubes.
H9
Totally. I don't know anything about Emo. But I know that the only reason I love my tube pre-amp so much is that it's paired with an awesome amp in my Krell. Spend all the money you want on the best tubes money can buy for your pre. Won't help a bit if your amp doesn't cut it.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -
*shrug*, whatever.....it's your rig, your money, your journey. I'll watch from the sidelines. We have ALL been exactly where you're at, so we do know a little (not that you don't). Just trying to impart some of the things I learned along the way.
Good luck

Yea I'm only joking with ya. I'll assess the amp when it gets here and report back. -

So you get the sound of the Marantz. Have you tried to implement her into the main system lately? I decided I'm going to go the direction you went even though I love this receiver. The 2245 will go to a second system.
My plan after I get the Emo, is to find a nice tube pre.
i did last year, i think...at first i thought: wow! this old marantz is sweet! but then i started to miss the talents my adcom 555 amp brings to the party.. -

the best advice I could offer,,is to listen to the older guys here, who have taken the time to respond to your questions,,they know what they speak of,,based upon experience,, don't pay me any attention,,I'm the crazy old guy with the white labcoat,,,mad I tell ya' utterly mad,,,isolated, insulated, and soundproofed--may your journey be a fruitful and happy one.JC approves....he told me so. I have and do I have freshly rebuilt speakers that I thoroughly enjoy thanks to all the help around here.
The amp situation is not me not taking advice. I certainly have, just not from here. I would have never thought of buying the Carver TFM without the recommendations I got here at CP. I regret having to sell it, I was just starting to fall in love with her. -
So let me get this straight. You have not one but two amps that you are happy with, the Marantz and the Carver. You have yet a third, the Emo, which you haven't even received yet. People here are telling you to stick with the Carver. But you have already made the choice to sell the Carver and keep the Emo, even though the same people who guided you through the process of rebuilding your speakers are telling you that it won't be a good match. And you're making that decision based on different people's opinions than the ones on this forum, who know as much about matching amps to your speakers as they do about rebuilding your crossovers?
Why not just sell the Emo, keep the Carver, and then start zero'ing in on a tube preamp?Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -

1. I think the Emo will sound better.
2. I committed to buying the Emo, the Carver sale will pay for it.
3. Can't have both right now. -
Place the SDA's 3 feet from the side walls--12-18 inches from the rear,,hook up an amp--get your listen on,,,after a week or so--decide what you like,,always remember,,source, source and source,,take care of that,,then start moving down the chain.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Sound better than what? A refurbed Carver that you barely have spent anytime with and really don't have a good pre-amp to run an amp?
So the Emo pre sounds terrible but somehow the amp will be magical? Probably not going to happen if you are truly looking for the sound you have been describing since you started the x-over upgrade.
I have a suspicion that's not nec the sound you want.

He can't position the SDA's properly in his room, he has little patience to listen to something, he hasn't got a decent pre-amp to run either amp.

AudioC, I understand your limitations especially with the placement issue. I also understand funds are limited. Just stick with something for awhile and see how it turns out. Your Emo xd-a1 probably isn't even broken in yet enough to evaluate it.

yep-- we all started somewhere--and not at the top--slow down,, the hunt is half the fun,,no such thing as instant gratification,,unless you have deep pockets,,which most of us do not.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

How can you decide to sell the Carver and keep the Emo before you've even heard it?
Can you not swing the cash to hold on to both long enough to at least hear the Emo first and then decide? I'm not telling you to renig on your purchase of the Emo. You committed to buy it, you absolutely need to complete the transaction. But at least get a listen in before you go selling the Carver.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -
