I'm a little confused by this James. You claim it nearly impossible to point out bad teachers, then claim it would not be hard to pinpoint lazy people who don't care. Which one is it ?
We have the same problems here in my state with districts, administrators, superintendants. Seeing that your from NJ, from what I gather, the unions will not let them do the things you suggest. By consolidateing, people will be out of a job, thats not acceptable to some, in your state and mine. By "some", I mean the teacher unions. I do agree with your thinking, the cost of a couple big wiggs can save alot of teacher jobs or at least go to compensate the ones deserving of 6 figures.
On a side note, your states teacher unions and Chris Christy have been butting heads alot, hows things working out for you in your state ?

The above stated teachers ARE bad teachers. When someone makes a blanket statement like, "Get rid of all bad teachers", I took it to mean not the ones molesting students, or ones that make it blatantly obvious that they don't know what they're doing. Of course anyone can tell who doesn't really belong there. In my 10 years of teaching, I've met 3 people who fit the description above - blatantly don't care, have obviously retired in their mind and are living out their days. Perhaps I've been lucky, although I've not taught in some priviledged places. I find that if people don't want to be there, unless they are totally useless as human beings, they figure it out long before nad just leave to make real money anyway. The blatant statement does cover all teachers, and I've known 2 people in my 10 years of teaching that would actually know what I was doing if they came into my classroom. Those that supervised me had no background in music, and I'd hate for them to critique me and let me know what I was doign wrong. Because I do not fit into the 'Useless Molester' mold, and few people would be able to tell if I know what I was doing, who's to say if I'm a good teacher? I'm thinking in hypotheticals, because if what many people want to happen, happens, it will effect real people like me.

Listen - I'm not in some political position and I would be lying if I said I really know what it would take to redistrict everythign. I do know that it would effect teachers, but it would effect lots of other people. Making a blatant statement that it's all the teacher's union's fault - well - I would never make the statement because I don't know.

I left NJ because of Chris Christie. I moved for family reasons, but both my wife and I feared for our jobs which pushed us over the top. I'm currently working as a maternity replacement, and will not have a job in a few months.

    Let's discuss #1 in depth.

Know why there's no discipline in the home anymore? Liberals. Disicpline your child, and CPS or the cops may very well end up at your front door. Why is that? Because Government is IN our lives, the way liberals like it. There's no need to "explain" to a 9 year old that calling Mom a **** is not nice; it's time for a butt to get whipped. Of course children brought up with proper dicipline from the start rarely do these things. They have been taught the pecking order by STRONG leadership from their parents. You don't need to be a bully, or abusive---you simply impose YOUR will; it takes balls/ovaries to do it, but if you're not up to the task, don't have children.

Children are ill-mannered and don't know their place these days. It's the new "hands off" approach of the liberals that now have the government telling us how to raise our children. I couldn't give a s@#t less, when warranted, my children got those butts warmed up. Today, they are gracious, well mannered adults that show immense respect in elders. As it should be.

In 17 years of teaching in looking back, all the "problem" students are balanced equally between conservative and liberal parents. The most common factor was that in every case the kids had their parents conned.

I whole-heartily agree, parenting is all about imposing your will as an adult and standing firm.

There is a saying among teachers, "Manners and respect are taught in the home, and practiced at school."

I would still respectfully request the reason why your wife joined the Union.

    Just saw this.

Basically, in the school system where she currently teaches, the union rep. makes a concerted effort to be one of the first people to meet and greet a newly hired teacher. Union application papers are in the new teachers hands almost as soon as that new teacher meets the building principal.

And the answer is exactly what you would expect. It takes incredibe resolve to buck the system.

In the past, a few brave souls tested the union's resolve. Tires have mysteriously been slashed and doors dented, but the worst part is the other teachers won't provide any level of support to those non-union members.

It's a bullying system that essentially sets a "my way or the highway" tone.

And pathetic that an educated person like a teacher cannot decide for themselves and they must be forced and bullied into compliance. Maybe the White House summit on bullying looked into this last week.

Again James, confused I am. You claim to "not know" much about the problems, yet you left the state partly because of Christie ?
One can only assume you left for fear of not having the job security a union offers if Christie gets his way. Please do tell us who has complete job security in the private sector ? It's that exact fear of job loss that compells one to perform their job to the best of their ability. Is that not a reasonable request ? Is that not something we teach our kids ? Or should anyway.
If your state of NJ can offer solutions without fireing any teachers, would that not interest you ? If it would, then whats standing in the way ? Union bosses ? I mean no disrespect James, and maybe I'm misunderstanding you being the internet and all, but you sound like the only solution you like is to keep things the same.

O.K. so let me get this straight. We can't ultimately have teachers take tests to come up with some rediculous scoring system, made by other administrators, who were once teachers themselves because in the end a test doesn't really let the person scoring the test itself know wether or not that person is indeed a "good" teacher. And on the other hand we cant really let an administrator sit in classes to see if the teacher is really a good teacher because, the administrator sitting in may not like the way the lesson is taught and is bias to their own teaching methods. AND, the tests given to the masses of under achieving Americans kids, who sit in the doldrums of academic achievement in comparison of the rest of the world, minus the third world, because it ultimately isnt a good jusdge because all the Jills and Johnnys in the classrooms all learn at different speeds. SO now that we know we cant really "judge" the teachers per say we as Americans look at other avenues on how we can deal with this situation.......MONEY, or not, how about millions dumped into South Carolinas budget, and yes it is ever rising, and still SC ends up just above Mississippi, and below the other 47 states. Maybe it is the parents....or the curriculum, but it cant be the itroduction of computers into a classroom, of course not. OR MAYBE IT IS, how about trying to teach a kid how to use the linear equation of a line on a cartesian plane, with a ruler and pencil, and the five year old pulls out a TI-93. HAHAHA, all they have to do is plug and play. Its always the method and always will be integrate technolgy after the foundation is built, because I still havent seen a house built with the foundation missing.

Teachers deserve a better environment, as do kids; but it won't happen without clamping down on discipline--and PARENTS.

Hey what are you doing? That was MY extra credit problem. I needed it in order to get a passing grade.

I probably was going to get it wrong any way because the answer I was going to give: "Its a boggus question?" In order to answer it correctly you first have do define what x is. Because if x = 0 there is no answer due to the fact you cant divide by 0. For x not equal to 0 I think the answer is x / l x l at least that what this video says http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sylzJaNir3I

Who is going to teach the parents on how to raise children?
At what age does the parent not become responsible for the child?
If you say 18, legally that might be true but it seems society is saying never-a parent will always be responsible for there children.
When does a child become responsible for their own behavior/actions and held accountable for it?

Right. The derivative of f(x)=|x| does not exist at x=0, but elsewhere its very simple:

    f'(x) = -1, if x < 0
    f'(x) = +1, if x > 0.

When does a child become responsible for their own behavior/actions and held accountable for it?

    1. That is the responsibilty of the people about to become parents.
    2. When they reach an age where they no longer wish to live by my rules, and/or advice.
    3. A child becomes responsible for their actions as soon as they understand right from wrong; now in more complex scenarios, it depends on intent or knowledge of what it is they did wrong. They are held accountable to the parent as soon as the parent is convinced the child/kid did the action knowing it was wrong. (common sense applies here).

    Do you have children?
