I just had a thought. Remember the early scenes in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, when, e.g., the missing planes from the Bermuda Triangle ("Flight 19" -- thanks, google) suddenly reappear?
If Spielberg had made that movie just a few years later, it could have included a scene with a sudden upwelling of the sea carrying in an tsunami of remote controls.

Nice thing about LEDs -- they're diodes, and AC mains power is... AC.
