you know what's funny about the internet?
according to Flikr, this is the image I've uploaded there that has the most views...

The dusty innards of a Technics SA-80.
    Go freaking figure.

    :|

EDIT: It does indeed possess perhaps the cheeziest innards of any nominally hifi component I've ever seen.

Four bottom of the liners from the second half of the 'seventies. :)

Meanwhile... I was just browsing eBAY and happened to notice this juxtaposition. It made me chuckle.

    kjf7gunk24gq.png

Mind you, the 40-1310, made by Foster (Fostex) for R/S, was/is a good high sensitivity tweeter, while also having almost remarkable HF extension (well into ultrasonic, like 40 kHz).

... but the 40-1375 is a very, very fine sounding tweeter and also quite sensitive (admittedly not as high) and also with very extended treble output (well beyond 20 kHz).
Bottom line, I'd rather have a pair of the latter than the former -- especially at a tenth of the price. ;)
Paying $750 for a pair of 40-1310s would be nuts.

Probably goes without saying that I - ahem - do have pairs of both. :#

The 40-1375s are out on loan to a friend in MA -- they make nice supertweeters for a pair of Altec Valencias, although they're absolutely at their limit in terms of keeping up with the sensitivity of Valencias.

    52036298318_934b071b20_b.jpg

The 40-1310 are in their boxes in the basement someplace. Bought 'em cheap on sale from R/S long ago. :p

Yep I noticed about 5 yrs. ago that the round super tweeters had went into outer space for price. I wish I still had mine. Originally they were like $20 a piece new. I would use them reflecting backwards on top of my speakers.

They follow the standard hipster/collector script. Only the Japanese-made 40-1310 command the highest prices. Later morphs (virtually identical) were made in places like Korea and (ultimately) China -- and sell for much less (although still more than they should).
R/S sold the things for many, many years -- and I am pretty sure they sold zillions of them, too.

The punchline to the whole thing is that Fostex still sells an extremely similar tweeter, with every bit of the sensitivity and HF extension as the 40-1310 -- and still for a very reasonable price (especially compared to other Fostex supertweeters). :)

It wasn't that one but my very first stereo system had a Scott receiver and a pair of Scott speakers. All hand me downs from my Mother, along with an unknown TT. For an 8 year old kid, I was in hog heaven.

The seed was planted when I heard my uncle Tommy's system earlier that day. I listened to this little bitty tube amp powering a pair of homemade Klipsh Klipschorns over LP and I fell in love with what I heard.

Came home and begged my parents for something, anything they had that I could use to set up a stereo system.

Keep in mind, this was back in 1978. When you didn't watch a NASCAR race, you listened to it on the radio because it wasn't on TV. If memory serves, they only televised the big ones. Maybe Talladega and Daytona and I believe it was only available on ABC's Wide World of Sports programming.

I acquired mine in 1977, I'm fairly certain they were of the Japanese manufacturing. I seem to remember most of the drivers I bought had the "made in Japan" label at the time. To my father everything made in japan was junk. Boy Howdy they were affordable though.
