    More steps:
    Montmartre

Love Montmarte! Been there several times. Check out the video "From Paris With Love" - Melody Gardot. I don't know if I can successfully post the Youtube link:

Carl, Montmarte only once for me, and very memorable in the mid 90's while on a business trip. Perhaps, the most memorable "place" I have seen historically. Would love to return as didn't have enough time to explore thoroughly.

The video is great. Thanks for posting. I saved it in my other YouTube music.

The Vikings Series had an awesome part about the siege of Paris, and showed a rendition of Montmarte.

I remember that stuff. There was another variant of it called methyolaid. That stuff burned like hell! Wonder what was in it?

I remember both Mercurochrome and Merthiolate being used on myself and my two brothers in the 50's & 60's. I remember one came in a small container with a glass rod dauber. The other came in a long slender glass tube wrapped in paper. I know one of the two burned when it was applied.

I preferred a nice Hydrogen Peroxide rinse, a Band-Aid and I was back outside and after it again. :)

Bactine was probably more expensive. Mom usually followed what grandma had done.

I also remember those two things. Are they gone? If so I guess they didn't really do anything medical.

I - vividly - remember the smell of mercurochrome :)

    v98ivpt987n0.png
Merbromin, the API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) of Mercurochrome. It is a topical antiseptic (and a pretty good one, although no longer sold in the US).

Merthiolate is/was a trade name for another organomercurial compound that, in my line of work, is known as thimerosal. This is the stuff that used to be used as a preservative in, e.g., vaccines but fell into disrepute due to a (completely spurious) imputed connection to autism.

That whole "Mercur" part of the names scares me. Makes me think our moms were unwittingly poisoning us with Mercury!

    oops, that's Merkur... ;)

Mercury (the element) gets a bad rap. Not entirely undeserved (mercury and mercury vapor are, indeed quite toxic -- as are many organomercury compounds), but, as in most things, a little common sense goes a long way -- and the common sense approach to mercury containing materials is long gone. :/

I think my mom wittingly poisoned me with Mercury when she wasn't entertaining or beating me!

No wonder the methyolaid hurt like hell for me. I later found out I was allergic to iodine. I can see both of them in the family medicine cabinet.

And mercury; in the high school chemistry lab, we always put mercury on our silver coins.

Other chemicals in those days that were fun included yellow phosphorus:
