Would it really be so bad for someone to make a tablet the size of the iPad, but with the concepts of the Archos9? (minus **** hardware of course).

I'd gladdly pay $1000 for a decent dual-core processor, 512MB-1GB of ram, and a 60GB hard drive. All of which costs less than$300-400 total.

The Archos9 had a decent idea going of a tablet PC (PC just meaning it was a portable computer). It had a bios you could edit, you could add printers/network drives to your hearts content...honestly, what's so wrong with that?

I find many uses for this ipad. It's going to make a hell of a touch screen remote. As some of you may know , control systems are using the Iphone for home automation control. This pad could be the next level of that effort. I'm excited to try one out and see what control systems are going to support it, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say all control system will have there apps on there if they are already not finished and ready to go.

if any of you experienced the high level of cool factor that one has when controlling there entire house from your cell phone , you will see the added benefits of this larger ipad. Apple is really making steps in the right direction.

I most likely will have one on release date. I use my Iphone to control my house. This is the next level. Honestly this is what I'm excited about the most. Ok surfing the internet on it will be cool , my wife will probably want that feature more then me. I use my iphone a little to surf but I have Apple computers all over my house so I prefer to use them for internet duty. But my wife likes to lay in bed and surf. I see this being much better then the laptops for that.

Pic's and all that other stuff we shall see if it's really necessary to have. Apple TV kinda put a stamp on pic viewing in my house. It's totally awesome. Everyone loves it. Apple Tv is the best product to hit the market since the release of the first Tivo / DVR products. Years ago you had to spend a ton of money to be that HOT.

Technology is great. I see bright things to come from this technology. Wireless , streaming connected world. Maybe one day we can kill all physical software. I'm all in.

Seriously??? $499 for a "hell of a touch screen remote"??? Sure, if it was marketed as such!! .

It's pretty pathetic when on release day we have to look at secondary uses to justify why a product isn't crap.

And they are not utilizing hardly ANY new technology, so if "new bright things" come from it, it's really coming from many other products before it.

I am NOT an Apple hater. Apple has always been innovative and either on the forefront of technology OR leading the pack in usability and ergonomics. But, no multitasking? When there's cell phones that can run 50 apps at once? What in the world were they thinking?? There is ZERO excuse for that. Jobs has truly lost his mind.

I was really looking forward to release of this, hoping that maybe this could replace my wife's laptop or at least be used as a secondary machine that's more convenient to take around the house. No chance.

I was sitting on Engadget yesterday watching the release of the iPad, and actually got really interested when I saw the web/eBook capabilities. But when I saw the UI and heard the restrictions (1ghz cpu? really?...and WTF is up with that micro card requirement?) I lost all hope of justifying the $500 on it.

You'll see people going "the average joe isn't going to need multitasking!". No, the "average joe" isn't...but the "average joe" isn't going to be buying things like the iPad. Tech-savy people are. Plus, forcing people into the iTunes store for their online videos (no flash for sites like Hulu/youtube) is completely stupid.

I was hoping the Archos9 wouldn't be terrible, seeing as how it was literally a tablet PC. You could access the bios, reformat it, install a new version of windows, etc. But it failed, and now I have to wait and see if the HP slate or Acer tablet are worthwhile.

The eBook argument is retarded. The reason the Kindle and the Sony readers were invented was because of the "e-ink" stuff - a display that you could stare at like a book without eye fatigue like staring at a computer screen. Apple said they wanted to do what the Kindle did but better, but instead they completely IGNORED what the Kindle did and went back to what people didn't want.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

That's a good point, but for me (I sit at a computer all day at work, and most of the night at home) eye fatigue isn't much of an issue (not yet at least...give it a few more years probably).

If it was $399 for a device that can do web/ebooks/video, I'd probably spring for it. But $500 for the "basic" version with barely enough room for a few HD movies, and no ability to pause my movie and search something real quick...not gonna work for me.

Unless they can jailbreak the iPad to include multitasking...hmm.

Well I'm young and stare at a computer all day too, but reading a book is just... different. You don't feel like the bright screen bothers you, but look at one of those e-readers like a Kindle or something sometime; the difference is amazing.

I've never had a chance to take a look at a Kindle or any other e-ink screen, so you could very well be right. I do know that I want a tablet, as I tend to spend a lot of time away from home and my gaming computer. With a tablet I could at least play some games (nothing too fancy), and watch a movie or read a book while driving! (ok, while BEING driven)

I'm not an Apple fanboi, but I bet that thing kills the Kindle, sells like the iPhone.
If I had some free cash, I'd buy Apple stock.
There's supposedly a huge niche of boomers who can't figure out regular computers and can't read an iPhone, but this will be the answer for them.

Also, you can read it in bed in the dark. I would have killed for that as a kid.

I agree, there is nothing new here...it's a giant iphone without the phone? But I think apple is just going after the Kindle with this--and frankly, with all the young people who were mesmerized by the iphone as cool and hip...I think this will, indeed, take over the kindles niche and erase it.

What I wish they would do is make their SCREENS out of some crack resistant poly-acrylic? Because lots of people I know who have iphones have dropped them and cracked their screens...doesn't anyone over at Apple think about 'practical' real world events??

Then let's not get into the fact that you can't replace the battery on ANY OF THESE APPLE PRODUCTS...hmmmm....I wonder why a manufacturer would PLAN that?

Actually my 350 dollar netbook can do all that and more and has about 7 hours of battery life or more...and guess what? It has all kinds of ports...is not much bigger than an ipad and has a bigger screen and a REPLACEABLE battery? And it has a HUGE hard Drive!! Oh my god!!

I'm not defending Apple but their stated reason behind using glass screens is it's the only thing scratch resistent enough.

Personally, I think they just want the 200 bucks to replace them.

I don't think in the fourth dimension either!!! ;)

Judging a product on speculation and "leaked specs" is stupid. Judging a product on released specs is perfectly valid.

People are ingenious, and I am sure that some folks will come up with amazing ways to utilize the iPad and make it a useful product for some things. But the lack of multitasking makes this product practically useless as a replacement (or even complement!) to a laptop or netbook.

When the iPhone came out, it revolutionized the phone industry and forced other companies to think outside the box and step up their game. Here we are years later and the other companies are STILL mostly trying to play catch up and make something as good. (Same with the iPod years ago). More than anything else it was because of it's usability. And that is where I feel they failed with this. Lack of multitasking (and even flash) handicaps it to the point it can't really compete with the netbooks. Yeah, it makes a kindle look like crap, but it's also twice as expensive. And it's not called the iReader either

In the end, I am sad :( Hopefully they put out an update that will make it what it should have been from the announcement.

I actually lend more credence to the people judging it on the specs than those judging it from having played with it for 5 minutes. Playing with ANY new, shiny device for 5 minutes fills me with a sense of wonder and a desire to own it, it's only getting it home and having it for a week before you realize that it's useless. That's why specs are published; so you can make an INFORMED decision rather than one based on a knee-jerk reaction to something pretty.

One reviewer, talking about its music playing ability, said it will be nice to read a book, and listen to music at the same time. But, that made me wonder how it can do that if it cannot multi-task. Or, does it have a limited ability to do more than one thing at a time?

Just like the iPhone, it has multitasking but not at a user level. So some of the built-in functions can multitask - in particular the music functionality can be backgrounded - but you can't background most things, and you definitely can't have two windows on the screen at once.
