How long can speakers last?

Mr2, you are really worrying about nothing & totally over thinking this.
Yes you will be fine with a higher wattage amp than a lower one. As pointed out more speakers get blown by being turn up too loud on receivers that DON'T have the power to give them for that volume.
Your ears will give out before the speakers do, unless you get crazy with turning it up then you will be deaf and won't need speakers! The speakers will only take the power that they need to operate to their full potential.
It's important to make sure that the DO have the power that they need to do so.
FORGET about break in. Just enjoy the speakers.
It all boils down mostly to common sense.so what you mean is. Larger power amp and small power concern speakers that will never had a problem. Is it? Like if I have 140w per channel amp and I have 100w speaker I will be fine?Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Heiney for the most part, most people like/use SOLID STATE gear. This newbie I seriously doubt is talking about tubes. Hence we focus on SS power & usually more is better than less.
You knew this but wanted to make it just a bit more confusing.
This poor guy is confused enough as it is, so it's best to keep it simple. Let's wait until he thinks he's an audiophile before we start talking about tubes & crap.;):p:DWell what about my case where I have 30wpc and my speakers can handle 500wpc.
The 30 watts I have now certainly plays louder, cleaner and has more dynamics than my previous 125 wpc amp and a 200wpc amp.
How can this be?????????? Well, because there are no absolutes in audio and in many cases there are always several exceptions.
A good rule of thumb (very loosely interpreted) is the more power the better, but that is not true in many cases as each individual circumstance will have a multitude of variables which make the above rule of thumb invalid.
YMMV

I know Cathy, just throwing it out there. BTW, I have SS, not tubes. . Just showing that there are no absolutes. But it's a good rule of thumb to have more not less power."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!

I'm thrilled that you know how to Google, but that doesn't change the fact that catalyzed polyurethane is still NOT catalyzed lacquer. Nor does it change the fact that no one uses it on their speakers.
-
Which part of I manufacture speakers don't you understand?.Which part of we use polyurethane clear coat don't you understand? Which part of the polyurethane we use is a two pack with catalyst and is not cured by oxygen don't you understand?.Which part of most in the furniture industry use this product don't you understand?
All of it because you're full of ****!
I know more about furniture and finishes than you could ever imagine, it's my business. The standard finish of the furniture industry since the '50's has been and remains today, lacquer.
So, why don't you tell us what brand of speakers it is that you manufacture and back it up with proof that can be verified. Before you ask, there's a multitude of folks here, including folks at Polk Audio that know what I do. I've even done work for the Smithsonian and the White House, so don't you dare tell me what is what about furniture and finishing products.
You're nothing more than a common troll and a total disgrace to this fine forum. It's time for you to leave!Political Correctness'.........defined

Anyway for those that care we do not manufacture paint but use these 2 pack polyurethane clear coats on our real wood veneers
I prefer to use to use whatever your momma's using for lip gloss on my real wood veneer.
HINT: there's an insult hidden in my last sentence.
HINT: there's only one sentence, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.
HINT: I'm not a custom speaker manufacturer, but I've seen some on TV.

So you sweep the floors at some speaker manufacturing company. I guess that could be consider part of the manufacturing process. Everybody counts;)
Keep blowing hot air.

Ummm... 1960s vintage KLH drivers would've had cloth surrounds, not foam.
I'm just sayin'.... -
This thread has been a real hoot...
I know that my RTA11TL's are certainly not the oldest around (circa 1990) but even before upgrading the tweeters and crossovers, they still sounded very nice. I have no idea how the sound compared to when they were new. Doesn't really matter anyway. Today they sound better than ever.
Now I did commit the cardinal sin of applying conditioners (Meguires or Lexol rubber protectants) to the surrounds to the surrounds of my RTA11TL's before I'd heard that it was a no no. I had done this about once a year for at least 10 years. Please forgive me . Fortunately, I do not see any signs of degradation and they look like brand new.
The Model (Monitor) 5A's that I just picked up (circa 1983) sound great and they are all original. The driver surrounds look like they have never been cleaned and are slightly brownish. What is recommended for cleaning the surrounds?

First of all I am not going to advertise my speakers on the Polk Forum. That would be rude.
We talk about and own all kinds of speakers here, so your reason has no merit. Simply an excuse because you're full of ****.I also said that we use polyurethane because it's very hard and durable.Do you honestly think I would post my speaker company name here when some people here are so aggressive and rude!.However I will post some pictures soon to shut some traps here!
Wait...you won't tell us the name, but you'll post pics!?! So, can we take it that you don't think enough of your speakers to put a name on them? And can we take it that you don't think enough of your speakers that you own Polk's!?! Again, you're full of ****.With regards to Jesse..he stated that polyurethane cures with oxygen.I just showed him that the 2 pack we use is different.
Excuse me! You said,Maybe their cabinets are finished with polyurethane wood varnish .In that case furniture polish is not needed.Maybe that's why
You didn't say anything about 2 part poly until after I corrected your comment, "Correct polyurethane is a catalyzed lacquer" by stating, "Polyurethane is nothing like cat lac as poly cures by reacting with oxygen while cat lac cures because of the acid catalyst. They also have very different thinners. While poly can be sprayed, I wouldn't recommend it. Cat lac, on the other hand, must be sprayed. Poly takes hours to dry, while cat lac is dry in minutes."
Regardless, the fact remains that catalyzed polyurethane is still NOT catalyzed lacquer. Again, you're full of ****.Has it ever occurred to Jesse that industry standards differ all over the world!.
Has it occurred to you that I deal with furniture from all over the world!?! Of course it hasn't because you're full of ****!
It's hilarious to watch you twist as you get caught in lie after lie trying to cover up the last lie.Political Correctness'.........defined

TAKING CARE OF YOUR
LSi SERIES FLOORSTANDING LOUDSPEAKERS
The side panels of your new LSi Loudspeakers are finished in natural wood
veneer. Clean these panels periodically with a soft cloth and furniture polish
to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid harsh detergents and cleaning fluids
[figure 9]. Clean and dust the Gloss Black lacquer area with a damp cloth
only. Do not use furniture polish on the Gloss Black lacquer. Carefully vacuum
the grilles to remove dust.
The above comes straight out of the Polk owners manual. So who were the clever dicks again that shot that down? I'm not even going to bother scrolling back  -

That's weird, according to polk they say NOT to use any type of furniture polish on the wood cabs. Just a cloth, dampened with water. I wonder why?
