Things are quiet just because as we speak (or type), a group of polkies are getting into an underground location in Illinois. The reason that got all these polkies converge in this unidentified location? They will demo an EMO.

They paid for shipping when they sent me a new XPA-5, and also didn't charge me for that amp at all, never paid a dime. And then when i decided to just keep the XPA-3 i had instead of the XPA-5, they paid for the return shipping for it as well.

I guess it's a "you're mileage may very" sort of thing in.

I actually have a post all ready to go for this thread. No strange reaction here. Finally got my ears on Emo and I was woefully underwhelmed. I will post my impressions later. I had high hopes based on all the fan boy comments........what a disappointment.

Let's just say "the value" shines through when listening. To be fair I had almost the same reaction to Outlaw amps a few years ago when they were the internet flavor of the month.

Still not ordering any Emo gear...so I still don't/won't have anything to report.

I have however ordered some Junior's "Most Fabulous" New York Cheesecake. One plain and one chocolate swirl. They should be delivered tomorrow. It sorta looks like pie...but of course it isn't.

Did you swap amps (A/B) during your audition? I'm still amazed people say they can tell the difference between SS amps, I've never been able to do it during blind listening tests (Amps where behind the rack with friend swapping cables).

It's actually very easy to tell a difference. We listened to Adcom, Emo, Monarchy, Pass and Marsh..........they all sounded different. As do cables, cdp's, dac's and just about anything else in the chain.

Again, I have a more descriptive post ready to go at home.

    As always....YMMV

There was a definite difference in SQ and sound signature. Unless you have a basis of comparison it's hard to hear the distinct defferences in sound signature between amps, pre-amps, cables, etc. My take on the Emotiva is that like many direct-to-consumer companies they pick their market niche and price strategy based on research, then manufacture to that price point. It was also clear to me that the Emotiva amp we listened to was tuned for HT use. Quite frankly I think that the sound signature it produced was pretty close to some of the Outlaw Audio gear I have owned or listened to. I found the sound signature of the Emotiva amp to be narrower in width, not having the depth/weight front-to-back or the dynamic slam that I like in an amp. Is that necessarily bad, maybe not in general HT use, and probably compares favorably at the price point. Does that mean it's a bad amp ........ well I ran Outlaw Audio amps that were pretty similar for quite a few years in my HT system. I was happy with them until I heard something I liked better.

Due to my own experiences I'm defiantly on the objectivist side of the fence when it comes to these things, however I do look forward to the review.

Heiney9 is right. And, I believe you can even hear the difference in mid-fi AVRs like Yamaha, HK, Onkyo, Denon. At least they all sound different to me. And Polk speakers in particular do better with 'warmer' sounding SS AVRs...yes some SS sound warmer than others.

That's your opinion, just don't go throwing it around as fact because objectively in controlled environments it can be proven wrong time and time again.

Edit: I'll more than welcome anyone in southern Arizona to me casa to conduct such an experiment using four different mid-fi receivers and three external amps.

You're right that is my opinion...but most things like that are.

Do you have real tests under controlled conditions that can 'prove' what you claim? And please do provide us with the tests, the statistical methodology and the like because I'm not alone in my opinion.

    Don't mean to be argumentative...but one shouldn't be a whimp either...right?

You have been involved in exactly how many of the controlled environment tests? And what makes you THE expert?
