it always boils down to it I guess.
I sound like an old broken record, but there are those that believe protecting yourself is more your responsibility than anyone elses. those are usually the ones who are pro gun.
I dont know if I can call myself pro gun, as I dont own one. I am pro-self defense. I live in NJ, which as a state basically believes that if I get mugged or attacked, my only option should be to lay down and take the beating/raping/murder like a man and stop my whining.
I carry a small collapsible asp baton, as well as a escrima stick in my car (I'm a huge stick fan I guess). whatever I carry that is primarily used for a weapon is technically illegal in NJ.........if a cop or trooper really wanted to bust my balls about it, they really could. thing is, I will always have something to protect myself with....letter of the law be damned, I'm not a f**king lemming either.
the other side of the coin believes we should wander through life in the hopes nothing bad happens to us. they believe your not in any danger until the worst case scenario happens
(case in point, tcrossma believing no action should be taken until the dog actually attacks). your not in danger of being mugged until your being stabbed in the kidneys and having your wallet stolen. they steadfastly believe that crime is not a path that happens slowly and forthe most part cant be prevented.
they have an odd belief that criminals have more rights and protections than law abiding citizens do (i.e. a criminal apparently has the right to his life if he is breaking into your house.....no one should die over "property" right?....the fact this person can easily kill you means nothing as the criminals rights outweigh your right to live in peace and be left alone/safe from harm) They obviously believe this because they feel no one should have a gun or any weapon for any reason, not even for basic home protection
......ever hear the term "violence is never the answer?" thats who I am talking about. apparently your supposed to get stomped in the head if someone attacks you....hopefully the police will show up and ask him nicely to stop tromping on you, as we wouldnt want the police to abuse the criminal's rights by actually assaulting him while stopping him from attacking you....that would be police brutality (remember, criminals have more rights than you)
again, look at tcrossma's argument (i hate to beat on the lad, but his argument just lends itself to it I guess )......a 150 lb snarling animal capable of killing the OP and his family, but the OP's call to place his gun in a position for faster action in the hopes of not getting mauled or watching his family become puppy kibble makes him the mindless savage here.....how dare he take responsibility for his and his family's safety. the gall of it
the funny thing is, these people staunchly carry this belief right up until the time they get attacked, beaten, mugged, raped...whatever. Thats when they suddenly "come to Jesus" on the whole stopping people from hurting you actually being a good thing issue
me? definitly not one of those folks. I dont mess with anyone, and I hate violence truth be told. but if you attack me, you might want to bring the A game, because I fight back. I protect myself because I have respect for my basic right to not being f&*ked with by some mindless savage that has no regard for others. maybe I'm just wierd like that.
I might not own a gun, but will always advocate a persons right to responsible gun ownership. I will always be a strong advocate of a person using whatever means nessecary to defend himself. of course, this should include steps to avoid trouble by using your head, but thats another topic for another day.Living Room 2 Channel -

1. You don't need to carry a firearm, especially w/family in tow.
2. A Baton, Pepper spray, stun gun, if needed, would be WAY better.
3. I never said I didn't own a gun.

In all seriousness I wouldn't want to see that.

Are you kidding me?
A freakin baton against a rot? I tried to stay out of this, but that is friggin ridiculous. A stun gun? Hope you have one that shoots out and you better hope you dont miss. Because if you have one that you have to be able to touch the attacker with...well, sorry about your luck on that one, you'd probably be dead.
Look what pepper spray did for this cop...just pissed the dude off more.

self defense is a very personal choice. just like I wouldnt fault someone for carrying a gun (as long as they are trained and do not misuse it) for self defense purposes......I also dont fault someone for eschewing the gun as I have (pain in the balls in this state and dont have the desire to pursue it.....yet). Being a 340 lb guy that an handle himself pretty good and a good track record avoiding **** that gets over my head helps too.
I sometimes roll with pepper spray, I love batons and sticks too.....cant own a stun gun in Jersey though (probably harder to own than a gun if you can believe that ****)
exalted has a very valid point, these items against a rotty? you better DAMN sure to know how to use them. I dont just carry a sick or pepper spray for fun....I learn as much as I can extensivly how to use them...thus raising my chances of them being effective...that said...I think I would rather have me with a stick against a knife wielding criminal then a 150 lb rotty......maybe I'm wrong..LOLLiving Room 2 Channel -

I'd like to have a Louisville Slugger if I am not carrying my pistola at the time.
I think that was the right thing to do, because I don't take any chances when it come to protecting my family. I have a CCW for the state of Tennessee, and I carry mostly after dark. Walking with the family, its a 99.9% chance that I am strapped. The bottom line is that the dude should have got his dog. I myself would have held my dog or had it on a leash, just to keep the neighborhood kids from being afraid to walk down the street. Pulling my gun out would have been a last resort, which it seemed to be in this case. Its good that your family or the dog were hurt, but watch that kid. He may have a trick or two up his sleeve. You are so wrong, I usually NEVER carry when I'm by myself ,I carry 100% of the time when I'm with my family especially after dark , but that's my thinking, I guess I'm crazy (like you called me on a reply before) for trying to protect my family, I'm just lucky we are not related!!!!! -
You're not crazy Tom, I CCW too. Try to steer clear of this neighborhood moron until the police can get a bead on him--no sense in putting yourself in a potentially regretful situation. I hope that I never have to shoot anyone, but if it comes down to me & mine---or them, it's nice to have the option.

Those also come in handy after you have ended the thugs existence with a couple of well placed hollow points
If you want to actually visualize how handy carrying a weapon with a family in tow would be .....watch a few horror/suspense films.
Of the many I have seen involving some **** or animal out in the boonies with a knife/axe/chainsaw/teeth/claws terrorizing a family, 9 out of 10 of those threats would have been eliminated ( 9 out of 10 because there are just some things that a bullet wont kill ) if the man/woman had been carrying a firearm...the movie is over in 10 minutes and you could go back to listening to your audio collection.
But seriously, I always carried...legally or not...while out with the family while anywhere away from our close to home daily activities. . I can take care of myself ( Still carry when traveling ) just fine, but with multiple threats and having to protect multiple family members... any one person needs a equalizer in that scenario. The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
Somebody may actually have made light of it somewhere in this thread, but it is absolutely amazing to me how badly we do need to be protected from each other in this country. People really think they are free to behave any way they please. A lot of them.

What's there not to understand..? Thats my question to all of you who said they carry a gun and would have shot the dog. If the dog was going to attack, he would have, he was simply defending his turf like you were protecting your family. I'm no Cesar Milan by no means! I've raised 2 rotties myself and they are a great breed of dog with a very bad rap.99% of it is the owners fault.
If that dog was attacking you he would have torn your arm off while you pissed your pants and cried for your Mommy, an attacking dog does not run up to you and stop and continue barking.
Thats not a dog attack! Hell, go shoot the 23 yr old owner if you need to shoot something. Thanks, Jeff... -
It's the owners fault? The thing is an animal. You can train it to sit down and eat dinner at the table with you, that doesn't mean it won't eat one of your kids for dessert. Without YOUR permission of course.

Can't argue with that. Which is yet another reason why smart, responsible people choose to carry. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

I see now why you are so closed minded you have 2 "rotties" , well I have 2 KIDS , to you the dog may be more important but most of us are normal and care more about the kids. -

and of course, a dog changing direction and going from barking to attack again is just unheard of right?
really?
focus clearly on this.....I've owned dogs on and off for over 20 yrs. I more comfortable with dogs than most people I know, but if a 150lb rotty is barking and snarling at me in that way we both know, then I am not going to be too confident in your asssertion that because the dog stopped to bark, that there was no way that dog was going to attack from that point.
thats just silly talk right there.
flat out fact, when you got a large particularly scary dog breed (you have Rotty's, I had German Sheperds) there going to scare people, which is why extra attention needs to be paid to that fact
the OP had no idea what was going on, there was a very scary threat to him and his family, and you expected him to have faith that the dog wouldnt attack to spare a prescious dog over the man's family. are you serious?
as a dog lover of a high order I think that statement is on the crazy side. In fact, statements like that come off as arrogant to a degree to a non dog owner. apparently you feel its the citizens responsibility to know definitivly if a snarling beast is a threat or not as much as an avid dog owner, therefore taking even the smallest onus of responsibility off the owner.
other people DO NOT possess the same dog knowlege we do....its not there responsibility to if they do not own a dog....its the owners to keep the dog in check (you were very right on that point at least)Living Room 2 Channel -
