If there's a mean-**** dog barking at me (and yes, it's happened many times in my life) I'll back off and call the police, not shoot it.

You just seemed a little cavalier about pulling out a gun in the middle of your nice neighborhood, that's all. For some reason it doesn't sit right with me, sorry.

The point is he DIDN'T shoot it, or do anything at all, he was just prepared if it did more than just bark. Good for you that you were able to "walk away and call the police". Tell that to someone who gets maimed or killed by a psychotic dog (it happens plenty). If I saw a large dog like a rotty maliciously running up towards my baby (if I had one), I doubt I'd have had the restraint ttomp had, firearm or not.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

That is the reason I also carry a flashlight , because I can blind somebody for a couple of seconds and retreat if I CAN , in this case I COULDN'T retreat safely with my family , but luckily it kept the dog at bay without having to fire my weapon.

I think you did well in the situation presented. Family was with you so your job was to protect and you did. As for the 23 yr old, a Can of Whip A$$ would do the trick. He's headed nowhere fast with that attitude and probably stands behind that Rottie as protection. I've had rotties and in the wrong hands, hell yeah they're dangerous.

I don't see anything wrong with what you did, given the fact that two small children and your wife were involved. I am just always wary about pulling a gun on anyone or anything. Although you had reasonable intentions, you just never know what CAN happen. That kid could have seen that and got so pissed that he pulls a gun and shoots you. You just never know.

Lets see... a barking Rottie and a guy walking his family with a .45 in his belt. MMmmmm seems like two hazards on that street! I'm glad we are not neighbors. Wow..! What has the world come to where a guy walks his family down the street with a loaded firearm..? Nice neighborhood, or HOOD.
So you think your only option is to have a firearm..? HELLO..! I'm in shock...
I think you are both crazy( you and the 23 yr old)

Yes, it sure is. I am also in or near Houston. I doesn't matter how much you spend, you are going to have "those kind" of neighbors here..

In Sioux Falls, I never really had to worry about my neighbors. And, I only had to shoot one or two dogs. Ever.

From reading your post it sounded like the dog was keeping its distance for a good amount of time just harassing you and barking at you while you watched the owner, then yelled at him to come get his dog. It doesn't sound like the dog was mounting an attack, but hey, I wasn't there.

Newsflash for dog owners everywhere - its not a person in a fur suit. Its a DOG. Who knows what goes through their furry little minds.

I have had large dogs since I got married (typically St. Bernards and Great Danes). We take them for walks around the neighborhood and introduce them to anyone willing to meet them. They have gotten out before (privacy fence around our back yard, but gate was open and I did not know) and they were returned without incident. It was lucky on our part and I know it. If one of them had been hurt while out (Shot, run over, whatever) I would have been pissed, but at myself for letting my dog be in that situation, not at the person who thought they were defending themselves or thier families.

You should never trust an unknown dog that is acting agressively twords your family and is not in complete control of their owner. I would not have shot at 20', but any closer it would be dead and I would not have lost a wink of sleep about it. It was smart to get the police involved so there is a record of the incident, but you still have to be worried every time you walk out in your own neghborhood.

Good luck with your dilemma, I hope everything works out well for you. It is unfortunate that a dog will probably end up dying because their owner is an idiot - but the death will be the owners fault not your own.

Why. Guys with big dogs seem to need to let them run around the block.
Bad enough with ankle biters, but one of these guys can do a lot of damage.
I don't care how "nice" they are, all dogs bite under the right circumstances.
And with no owner with a leash to control them, it will happen. Dogs on a leash
and under a owner's firm control, different deal. I'd hate to see a
dog die, but sadly enough, you're only allowed to shoot the dog, not
the moron that creates the dangerous situation. I have had to call
animal control on a bunch of stupid **** around here. Lock a
large animal in a wood fenced back yard all day every day and night,
and you end up with a very anti-social dog. I've seen a Rot come
right through a fence. If he had taken another run at it instead of just
trying to stretch through the opening, it would of been ugly. I saw an Akita
do the same thing to some school kids. Both times, a call to animal control
did the trick. They don't seem to have any humor for that in my town.

Exactly..! Nothing happens in South Dakota. Why the HELL would you live in a situation where you need to pack weapons to walk down the street? Let alone put your family through that!!!!!!!! I will settle for making a lot less money for the security of my Family...! I can't remember the last time I locked my car doors at nite. Maybe at the Mall. And I sleep very good, Thank You.
It doesn't make any sense to me. I don't want to offend anybody on where they live. I don't know what draws people to big cities..? The more people the more nutjobs...!!!!

    Uh, yeah.

    From a 2006 article :
More than 41,000 South Dakotans have permits to carry handguns or conceal them in their cars - the highest rate per capita in the nation, an Argus Leader analysis shows.

Safe or not, people in your state like to pack more than anywhere else.

I'm not trolling or trying to start a fight, since guntalk is illegal on this forum, but anytime a gunowner pulls a gun, you stand a chance of facing consequences, legally. If he is the pothead you claim, that most likely stopped him from calling the cops before you did, or you might be the one with charges.

Me in that situation with my two girls.... You would certainly have a different story. Even the cop said plug the dog. Kids plus big rotty ummm dog would have been gone. I would not even let that dog have a chance. If anyone has seen what a dog of that kinda magnitude can do I think you would agree. A rotty can literally crush a kids head in its jaws. No friggen way would that dog have made it if I was prepared.
    Thanks

And South Dakota is a fine state, with fine people.

The folks in Holcomb, Kansas probably felt the same way, Jeff, back in 1959.
They didn't lock their doors, they trusted their neighbors, and didn't feel any sense of danger, either.

However, it's not necessarily the neighbors you have to worry about but, rather, the folks passing through.

Rotties are the hardest biters. My friend that had them would not let me out of my room with the kids. Those dogs were the sweetest dogs. Really. But he was dead serious about them. Rotties are very dangerous around kids if they have not been raised with kids. Even rotties that have been raised with kids can turn out of the blue with no signs at all. I am not trying to put a scare on ya, but in seconds they can kill. No joke.

My ex wifes bimbo friend (nice silly cones)came up about two weeks ago with two "friendly dogs". Well the X calls freaked out that the dogs were vicious, and she had the kids in the house. One of them was pissing on the carpet. So I am thinking OK my X does not like dogs, and I am good with them. So I go over. She tells me that the dog tried to bite her and just missed. So I go in the basement to get the dog out. I am all friendly, and cheerful with the little ****. He goes to go by, and wham he nailed me without warning. Poked a nice hole in my shin. He goes back into the room he shat in(nice), and starts to growl at me. I sit down, and talk nicely to the dog, and after a while of tossing his toy twords the door he bolts upstairs, and out on the deck. The female was nice. I am pretty quick, but so was he;)

And murder, rape and robbery happens everywhere, not just in big cities; If you don't lock your doors at night, you're doing your family a great disservice; Many people don't find comfort in relying on odds alone to protect their families. Many, if not most, people would prefer to have an active ability to defend.

sorry that happen to you.. and in front of your wife and kids....

call your local humane society and tell them the dog owner does not use a leash when walking his dog... and you are concerned his unleashed dog will bite or maul your kids.

I can sympathize, here where I live is no different.. I swear there are more aggressive dogs like pit bulls and Rott's here than any other place on earth. Nearly every other house here has either a pitbull or rotty.
