H9, the link to your blog now works. However, the link in your blog to megaupload appears to be broken. no biggie. I just copied and pasted it and it took me there. There, being Megaupload with lots of advertising for "megaflirt": lots of tasteful babes(???) in my area. Anyway, I didn't get distracted. Signed up for the downloads, not the women. Got the six songs. Had to download some type of software (WINRARE) -- just did a free 40-day trial membership -- for unpacking the piles. I just put them on IPOD and am about to go running. Thanks.

I know I realized the tags on the files were inconsistent so I fixed the tags, deleted the original file and am in the process of uploading the same "sampler" but with the correct file tags. Give me about 15-20 minutes to edit in the new link after it uploads and it should be set.

I could have left the file tags in the original file but I'm kind of anal about that stuff. :D

    You're welcome.

I've been a collector for many years and the number one rule for me is; share the music. Just keep an eye on the blog and I'll post here also when I add things. It's not going to be a daily thing.

It's insane how long it takes to upload files. But I'm going to use the blog for other interesting things Zep related as I come across them. Again it's not going to be getting multiple daily entries.

Did Megaupload work ok for everyone? Is/did anyone pay to join for a month or two? If many of you did, I'll try to accelerate the upload process so you get your money's worth.

The first show in FLAC will be uploaded in the next couple of days. We'll see how that goes since the files will be much larger.

I also plan to keep it going even after the shows I mentioned are uploaded. So expect to see many many more shows as time goes on.

Zeppelin was a completely different band then what you got on the official recordings. The early stuff in 69-70 is really intense sometimes. Think back no one was really playing with kind of raw power and heaviness.

Sometimes Hendrix pales in comparison to the high energy early shows of Zeppelin. The improvisations and pure musical talent of all four members really comes through in some of these "raw" recordings. You can certainly see and feel what all the excitement was about at that time.

It was all word of mouth and they became huge so fast after their first and second tours of the US.

where did you get all of this?

About 20 years of trading and connections. I certainly don't have any important "connections" but I know where to look and how to navigate in the Zep community. Anyone can do it if they have enough time to do the research and make the contacts.

I started the old fashioned way trading cassette tapes in college back in the late 80's early 90's. I had a good trading friend in Japan that would get me some of the more expensive Japanese releases on cassettes sent all way across the ocean.

Now I have these 300 tapes sitting here and most if not all of it has been more complete, remastered, lower generation sourced and put on cd. So I've been tracking down many of the same old shows (and many new uncirculated more complete) on cd.

I have several "underground" guides to live Zeppelin music that I use as reference material when looking for upgraded releases and dating a certain show, set lists, completeness of source as well as generation from the master.

Unfortunately all these published guides are long out of print and command a pretty hefty price on e-bay used. Much of what I've found on the internet has come from a couple of bit torrents where you have to be approved to be a member. Run by someone who has some connections to the band. Pretty far down the chain but 75% of the upgraded, more compete, uncirculated stuff have come from him in the past 3 years. Once they come off the bit torrent they are "publicly" distributed on websites or by old fashioned trades by generous people in the trading community.

The latest releases are so limited chances of getting the "actual" cd with the art work etc. is very hard and they command prices in the hundreds of dollars each. Chances are it will be offered for free on the internet eventually.

It's like hunting for Dinosaur Bones, it's all about the leg work and making contacts knowing how to navigate and being able to discern the BS from the truth. Just keeping up on new releases is a chore, but it can be done.

I had (3) different audio recordings of the recent 02 reunion show within about 5 days, and within a couple weeks I had (2) different video sources of the show.

I'm just trying to share some of the shows as they have been shared with me. There is no one place to go, it's like an easter egg hunt around every corner there could be something new.

You can get a lot of this stuff from Dime and a members only (you have to be approved; very hard to do) torrent called Royal Orleans run by a guy named "Presence". He seems to have connections to someone with connections to the band because the stuff he has made available is legendary. The story he told me is his dad worked for Showco which was the exclusive sound company for Led Zep and they made recordings from almost every show.

He is responsible for many of the newer lower generation more complete shows. I also believe many of the really great recent recordings were leaked by someone very close to the band or perhaps Jimmy himself. He has often made comments about no need to put out anymore live stuff as the "bootleggers" take care of all that anyways.

    Hi H9,

I have a question for you on musical influences on Led Zeppelin. You're absolutely right -- there's a popular Zeppelin and then really a different band when you start really listening to all of there stuff and peeling away the lairs. (That said, I don't have nor have I ever heard any of these kinds of recordings).

But back to popular perception. I recall that I only really heard of/heard Zeppelin back in high school in the late 1980s. It seems all kinds of kids listened to them -- stoners, the cool crowd, even jocks. But the sort of songs you would hear were Stairway to Heaven, Misty Mountain Hop (still love that song) and Fool in the Rain. And a few years ago, I was going back through my high school yearbooks (for '88 and '89) and more students quoted Zeppelin in their senior quotes than any other band/singer/writer/thinker.

But a few years later, when I really started to listen to all of their recorded stuff, what struck me was a prominent blues strain through many of their songs. To this day, one of my favorite songs they recorded is Traveling Riverside Blues (I think its only officially available on some of the box sets released in the 1990s). Of course there are many better examples of blues-inspired tunes, but I'm wondering if you have any info on their influences, when it comes to the blues.

P.s. Norm, that's a huge question. Give me some time to sort it out and give you a short overview of their influences.

Sorry, without re-reading the back-posts, is there any order that you're putting shows out there? By date? By sound quality? By performance quality?

That is something I've been thinking about. The best way in order to make it flow really well and for one to notice the evolution is to do it chronologically, or at least within the same era.

The problem is the inconsistencies in the recordings obviously. For now I'm trying to put up the best recorded stuff first and later on for those more interested in the evolution of the band I'll go back and fill in.

So the first couple shows will be from 1969. The current show is both an outstanding performance and recording. They won't all be quite this good, but it gets you started off on the right foot.

So to recap the idea is for a chronological, however there is atleast 1 or 2 other fantastic shows from 1969 which are much earlier than the Texas Pop Fest show. I'll come back to them at some point.

I've cross posted in the Music and Movies forum to get a bit more exposure

    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?p=866525#post866525

There are about 15-20 or so that expressed interest but so far the DL's have been very few (about 6). Is this going to work for everyone interested?

Give me some feedback if you want. I want to make this easy and enjoyable for those interested. Even if your just slightly curious give it a shot.

Comment here or the other post.

Really 20 minutes? Are you sure? What type of connection do you have? I've been DLing on Mega even before I had my premium account and it took about 4-6 minutes for a 300MB file.

Hope that's not the norm for everyone. Not a big deal but when I start with the 73-77 shows those are anywhere from 2-3 hours so you'll need to set some time aside for DL :p

Glad it worked for you. There is no hurry as I'm not going to be rushing to upload stuff everyday. Look for the next show which is another short file maybe on Sunday night or Monday.

Yeah, it was about that long. When you sign up for an account with that download provider of yours, if you take the free account I think download speeds are a bit lower. Fine by me, 20 minutes of download time for a mint zep show? No brainer...

When Zep first came on the scene, I didn't really like them very much. Too hard for my tastes. But it didn't take long for my tastes to change!

New shows posted. How is the RAR file working out for everyone? Any difficulties? I can post them as Zip files if that's more manageable for everyone. WINRAR is my default and sometimes I forget others might not be familiar.
