Interest Check - Led Zeppelin Karma

I’ve tried on 2 other occasions to distribute/share some of my favorite Led Zeppelin performances. It’s just not manageable on a list this size to do it on a large scale so I’ve decided to test the waters, an interest check if you will, for a pay it forward type Karma.

In the past year or so there have been a plethora of upgraded and phenomenal Led Zeppelin releases; many of them soundboard recordings, as well as a recently unearthed multi-track master from 1973 that will blow you away.

My apprehension to offer these has always been conflicted with the idea that this is an audio board and no matter how good the recording (with a couple exceptions) these are amateur recordings and really don’t sound as aurally pleasing as an “officially mixed” release. As far as bootlegs go these are excellent even considering most are 30-40 years old. Having been a collector for 20 years the newly discovered recordings coming to light are exciting, as I would have never guessed this kind of quality was being horded.

What I’ve done is taken the best of the best as far as performance and sound and assembled a nice cross section of recordings from 1969-1980. The thing with Zep is every concert and every subsequent tour was different. They played medleys and were free form jam band that took a lot of chances on stage. They never played things the same way twice and many of the concerts are unique and individual from night to night because of this.

I’m currently compiling and editing a list of concerts to augment the “official” releases. This Karma is for the hardcore Led Zep fan, but anyone is welcome to participate. If you feel you need superior quality recordings to enjoy this, then it’s probably not a good idea to be “in”. Most of what I have picked is soundboard recordings but there are a handful of audience recordings that are superb and give a great “vibe”.

Right now this is an interest check. I plan on distributing (5) sets on DVD-R in FLAC format. I would expect that the 5 people would have the time and capability to pass it on to others and so on…..and so on….and so on….until all that is interested have a copy.

Please comment and show interest here and if it’s positive enough I’ll start an official Karma thread in the near future.

    A Plethora ? ... Not hardly ...

Apparently you know more than I do... I just don't get why posts like this are necessary . Maybe I used the wrong adjective. A load of upgraded shows have been released.

I'm heading out for evening, I'll get back to the PM's and Doro tomorrow.

I would love to hear more of the live recordings. I have recently purchased all the 200g reissue LPs but have not had a chance to listen to them. Don't ask how much 'In Through the Out Door" was.

Still my all time favorite band.

I don't know if anyone else does, but I frequently use "fool in the rain" as a reference song for speakers. Vocals are too processed to get a good feel, but it's very complex song and good speakers will always sort it all out very nicely.

Absolutely. ditto on what Doro said. I have been a fan of Led Zeppelin since the early 70's when my brothers were smokin' and jammin'.

Lemme know how many discs you need.

How many minutes of music are there approx?

Well there is some interest :p

Trying to edit down is very hard, right now I have 11 shows but I think it needs to be edited down a bit more. The goal is to get the complete shows to fit on (2) standard DVDR's which is about 9 gigs. I am doing it in FLAC because of the space savings. I'm not sure what 9G in FLAC equate to in minutes, but it's a lot.

4.275MB is equal to one minute of a Flac file.
Flac files are burned to media as data files.
8.6GB (2 dvds) would represent approximately 33 hours of music

Keep 'em coming. I think the best thing to do is for me to host these recordings somewhere and have them user downloadable. It's easier, cheaper, less hassle, no mailing of packages, etc. That way all that have a fast connection and minimal computer skills can download each show.

I know there are some who still use dialup and/or have an intense hatred of the PC :D, and I can make physical copies for those that have these issues.

    Here are the show's

8-31-69- superb soundboard almost professional sounding recording from the Texas International Pop Festival, Dallas Texas

11-6-69- excellent well balanced audience recording that could pass as a soundboard recording Winterland Ballroom, SanFrancisco

3-21-70- "pre broadcast" radio soundboard incomplete PNE Coliseum, Vancouver Canada

10-4-72- excellent (on stage) audience recording that could be mistaken for a soundboard source. Festival Hall, Osaka Japan

1-22-73- superb multi track soundboard master, to this point the single best sounding bootleg recording to surface. The holy grail of sound (up to this point) so to speak. Refectory Student Union, Southampton University, UK

3-24-73- superb 3-D audience recording of what many feel is the greatest set of concerts by the band ever. Orthenauhalle, Offenberg Germany

3-19-75- another recent superb soundboard recording with atmosphere. PNE Coliseum, Vancouver Canada

6-21-77- one of the most famous and among the greatest audience recordings made by the famous (now deceased) Mike Millard who taped many many concerts at the LA Forum in the 70's. If this show doesn't convince that Bonzo is the greatest drummer ever, there is no hope for you. This a desert island disc for me. The Forum, Inglewood California

6-17-80- superb very lively sounding soundboard of the opening show of the European warmups for the next American Tour, which never happened because of John Bonham's death. Westfalenhalle, Dortmund Germany.

To me these are the minimum that a Zep fan should own, the great thing is they are superb recordings to go along with the "out of this world" playing in most cases.

Serious collectors realize there are other more famous and perhaps even better performance selections, but many of those suffer from good to very good sound quality. I tried to keep the selections to recordings the casual fan could listen to on a regular stereo with little to no aggravation. Being a hardcore collector I can tolerate much much worse recordings if the performance makes up for it.

    H9

P.s I'll probably throw in a very early 1969 show to make it an even 10. 1969 shows are my favorite, especially the early ones. They mow down everything in their path. Heavy psychedelic blues especially from the Fillmore concerts.

I know torrents are popular for this type of thing, but most on here aren't familiar with how they work and how to set up on their computer. I appreciate the offer and I'll keep it in mind, but I think I will check into hosting these somewhere for dl.

Wow, I just stumbled across this thread. I'm a huge Led Zep fan. Though I picked up the complete box set of studio recordings (10 CDs) a few years back, my favorite is the 2003 triple-CD live concert from L.A. in 1972, How the West was Won.

Pardon my ignorance, but are you talking about audio recordings? Since you mentioned DVD-Rs, I'm a little confused. Do you mean making audio recordings on DVD-Rs (as opposed to CD-Rs). The reason I ask is that while I can make copies of CDs and could send them on, I don't have a DVD recorder.

But please count me in, whichever way you decide to go.

Yes, it's audio tracks but because DVDr's can hold more info it's much more manageable. At this point I'm looking at hosting the tracks somewhere and then people interested can dl them for themselves. It's easier, cheaper, and then all can participate without waiting for others to burn and mail, etc.

I'll probably use U Send It as a hosting site. I'm trying to work out the details as far as how many dl's are allowed and how much storage will be necessary. The links will be password protected and I will provide the password to all interested in dl'ing. Uploaded files will be in FLAC for 3 reasons.
    1) Smaller files
    2) Faster dl's
    3) Ease of use. One small simple shareware program which I'll provide a link to can convert FLAC files to .wav files for regular cd burning.

Anybody have another hosting service that might work better?

For those like me who really want to make these things look nice and complete I'll provide a link to the actual artwork for each show. Many times the artwork on boots are pretty cool and can be comical. These are actual color scanned artwork that can be dl'd and printed out if one wants to.
