With lithium ion batteries you won't have to wait 5 hours. I think the newer ones can charge to 80% in 15 minutes or so and then the remaining 20% takes 3 hours or something like that. I also think the electric cars they are developing now have both an electric engine and a gas one so when you run out of juice you can use gas. I could be wrong though...
An electric with a gas engine is called a hybrid. THere are DOZENS of those out right now (despite the apparent vast conspiracy to keep them under wraps, nearly every major automaker has their major models available in hybrid).
As for the charging, I find it hard to believe that is true. The amount of power you would have to transfer to charge an electric car battery in 15 minutes would create enough heat to melt your car.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

The thing I like about the ban is people can't smoke at work or at a place like the DMV where you'd be forced to go.
Smoking should not be banned in restaurants and bars, it should be up the the owner of the establishment whether or not to allow smoking. The owner should decide who he wants to cater to, not the government. It's not like there wouldn't be plenty of non-smoking restaurants, most of them around here have been non-smoking for years, long before any laws. -

Awesome, so I can drive 300 miles, and then have to stop for 5 hours while my car charges up, then I can go 300 more miles! Woohoo!
Sorry, off-topic, but that topic is so often ignored when people talk about how the electric car is such a magical solution.
They also seem to ignore that it causes about the same amount of pollution to charge those cars. And there is also the issue of how to dispose of all the old batteries. -

Well, the idea behind it is that we can create powerplants that are less polluting (per "watt" or what have you) than the hundred million cars out there. It's a lot easier to focus on lowering the pollution level (and maintaining) a single power plant that powers fifty thousand cars than having to worry about each of those fifty thousand cars individually.
You know, in theory. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

Here is a fantastic read, (kind of long, well worth it) by someone who has definitely done his homework. I found something in it, that is sorely lacking in today's society.....common sense. Please check it out, no matter which side you ride.

Great post!
That's an extremely well written article IMO. I encourage folks to read it. I think it pretty much sums up what I have been trying to say. The last part has so many unacceptable truths, it's not funny. No matter what side of the fence you are on.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -

OFF TOPIC RESPONSE
I can't say that I know anybody who drives more than 300 miles per day. I know a few who occasionally drive more than 300 miles on a single haul (ie road trip) but money saved on gas could easily get you a rental vehicle that is gas powered for the once or twice per year they would need it.
Electric is OBVIOUSLY not an option to completely obliterate combustion engines (ie: emergency vehicles, couriers, trucking companies, YOU apparently, but it IS an option to replace the majority of passenger vehicles on the road. The biggest stepping stone to overcome: The option isn't even their for people who would like to have the choice. Having a choice has never been a bad thing has it?
When dealing with a large group of people there is never a magical solution to any 'problem', but when people are given a choice, improvements can be made.
As I said, people need to consider that what is right for them may not be right for everyone. -
I went to a restaurant's bar tonight for the first time in years and it felt like I was on another planet. 100% smoke free.

I don't drive 300 miles a day regularly, but I like to have the option. I'm still relatively young and single; if I'm at work on a Friday and my friend calls and says "we're goin' to Foxwoods" I'd like to say "let's go" not "I can't, my car doesn't drive that far."
It's just a logistical question I'm asking; I'm not saying the technology shouldn't be available or promoted , I just hate the limitation that comes along with it and thus hope some other alternative comes about (hydrogen fuel cells were promising). If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Were the first versions of electric cars the type that would recharge the batteries from braking etc? Did that change the overall range on those cars?comment comment comment comment. bitchy.

Only here can you go from smoking to electric cars in a heart beat.Having choices is a good thing. While wind, solar, electric, may work for some, down town New York is a bit more challenging.I forsee this issue hitting the back burner after the election,if gas prices come down that is.

I went for the hardhat tonight in case someone lit up we were all going to pull out our bats. I did get a short buzz after drinking one draft of fat tire. I hadn't had a beer since the night of the ncaa basketball championship.

Where does one conceal a bat in a restaurant, in the summer? "CL..... your seat!, It hath but one leg!"
I won't even comment on the hardhat.
What were you going to do with it, fan the smoke away? If you were buzzed from one beer, you might want to set your purse down and use both hands on the bat. -
It's so nice going to a restaurant or bar and not leaving smelling like a nasty ashtray. It's nice to be able to see across the room. It's nice to not feel like you're breathing heavy, filthy air. It's nice to not see people smoking to make them look cool. It's nice being smoke free.
but then again, I'm a rarity as a person who has never even tried cigarettes because I never fell to the power of peer pressure in high school. I knew who I was and I still do.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

Your right,if you don't smoke, the smell is very offensive. So patronize a no smoking establishment, and I will patronize one that allows it.Whats wrong with that? Then neither of us have to cross paths and moan about it.But somewhere down that slippery slope, only the rights of non smokers was recognized,Smokers have no rights,we are sub-humans dontcha know.
It's also nice to not see fat people trying to cram themselves into a carnival ride, airplane seat, speedo's,car pools, park in handicap spots, and so on.There for,we must relieve you of your rights to eat high fat foods. You shall be taxed all the way to the gym until you fall into the guide lines set forth by those skinny people. No fast food,no bakery goods,no ice cream,no snacks,no desserts.Pay until you slim down, sounds fair to me,no?HT SYSTEM-
